I've made 6 levels so far and have uploaded 4. The weird thing though is which one people seem to like the most. I made one with some reasonably tricky platforming, another one involving a bit of wall jumping. Then there's another one which is themed somewhat with fish and squids all over the screen. But the only one getting stars is one that I just threw a whole bunch of elements at as soon as I got the game. Took me maybe 15mins to make.
So I don't know what the trick to getting stars is. Maybe what you need to do is make the level fairly easy and have one simple gimmick. Make death seem like it's inevitable but give enough powerups that it's not. It also really, really helps if you have someone play through your level other than yourself before you upload.
....makes a funny stage that ends up being too difficult for a first castle level
...You know what, I just don't care if this is hard, I'm having too much fun with this one. xD
You guys will love this once it's up, lol

Keep it PG-13-ish.
@skywake: For the general public, yes. You need to make derp levels with a bunch of crammed stuff to get stars.
OR
you can find people who know what a good level is, and have them rate it.
I'd love to check out what you have made, once I get the game in the following weeks.
New Super Mario Bros. Deluxe, a remake of Super Mario Bros 1 and The Lost Levels for NSMBDS.
new 3DS: 0276-2211-7514
Hey guys, would you please try my new level. It is called Cave Diving!
The ID is:
F30D-0000-0026-DCB8
It focuses a lot more on puzzles than platforming.
What does a guy need to do to get his levels played round here haha.I've just added another 'Bowsers 2 Way Dungeon' to My Super Mario Maker Levels which so far has all my levels with 0 ratings,0 likes and 0 comments from the NL community. My levels aren't gimmicky and not overly challenging once you figure out what to do. Would love to hear what you guys think!
In game,I'm having the same problem as @skywake , lots are trying my first attempt which was flung together in a few minutes. It is so simple and easy that it's probably putting them off trying my other levels. It's only been awarded a couple of stars out over 120+ plays but considering I've only got 8 in total I don't want to delete it haha.

Well, maybe. That first level I made I spent no time on and I didn't try to "balance" anything I just threw power-ups at the player. It's just a simple idea in a very short level. And TBH I actually kinda like that level more than my other ones even though it's ridiculously simple.
I'm just trying to get my head around what people actually like. From what I can tell so far the best levels are:
Short
Surprising
Can be completed by more novice players
Will still cause the occasional death from more experienced players
Some playlists: Top All Time Songs, Top Last Year
An opinion is only respectable if it can be defended. Respect people, not opinions
I have the same thing as well.
If I had to put a educated guess on it: The game has only been out for 3 days now. Your first attempt is getting the most plays because it's been out the longest and because you put your level out while everyone else was all excited to play the game for the first time. Play rate goes up seemingly exponentially; I'm sure your first level wasn't played too much at first too, but you were too busy creating your first "real" level to notice.
In addition, you need to check your completion rates. Levels with very low completion rates will be played far less than levels with high (high being like 25% here) completion rates. It's probably why the auto-play levels get so many plays.
I for one have just started to get a spike in plays on my second course, so I'd say give it a few more days. After like a week, then I'd be worried. And I know it's frustrating to wait, but I say this as someone who had a similar issue and got this conclusion out of it.
I'll try to play some of your levels here peeps when I can, but I've been itching to get some creating in all day.

I'll try to play as many levels as people advertise here if you play one of mine in return. It might take me some time to get through all of them though but I will try.
I have a level that I myself could barely beat, though that may be because I suck at 2D Mario besides NSMBU.

Also, I can't wait to try out some of these levels later, once I get home.
I found this stage near impossible. I played it probably over 20 times and only got as far as the second music block before the skull platform.
Anyone want to give my course a try? ID: AD28-0000-0025-5689 Constructive criticism would be appreciated, I plan to do a lot more with it but I'm limited since I only have gotten one tool delivery x_x
Star Fox theme is pretty cool, I thought the flying style was pretty creative. I haven't seen a stage like that yet. I beat it and gave it a star.
Great news everyone the legend of Mario enter the chomp is now out to play just type the special promo code 4656-0000-002A-56DE for your free copy to play. @MasterWario: @skywake: @yokokazuo: @Rexcalibr: @Rixor13: @OorWullie: @pherret022: @99mushrooms:

This thread will probably be used by many users to discuss and ask questions about the software itself, please let's be considerate with them and not flood the thread with level codes.
So, I'm not sure if anyone has brought this up, but the infamous amiibo costume showcase level that leaked all the costumes available was actually made by Jirard, otherwise known as The Completionist, from That One Video Gamer. Turns out people were showing his level, which was available online in the media copy servers, but not leaving out the part that showed he made the level. He explained this in his Completionist Review of Super Mario Maker.
Seriously though, it gets to the point where no one is actually discussing Mario Maker, and it's sad, really. There's so many wonderful things to talk about with this game.
@UGXwolf So wait, did he plan to make the level and expect people to post it online? That's pretty funny, actually.
