I've seen OP's problem happen numerous times, but a more glaring lag-related problem IMO are issues with items falsely connecting. If you are playing in a laggy game, there is a good possibility that when you shoot and connect with green shells, fireballs, bananas (any item that doesn't home in), the game registers a hit visually on your side, but no hit registers on the server. The opponent simply drops no coins and keeps on moving. This can sometimes happen several times in succession. The problem lies in that your projectiles disappear, but the player never takes any damage, rendering those projectiles pointless.
This also happens with items like the star ( the other night I drove into someone three times, and every time they only bounced once, dropped no coins, and went right back to driving), but at least with the star you still get the benefit of invulnerability and speed. I feel like this lag problem really hurts the viability of the online game in general because it renders sharp shooting of green shells, bananas, etc a useless tactic in laggy settings.

wow.... I wonder how much this effects the game. Mario Kart 8 is a seemingly smooth game online but now all of these weird things that happen are starting to make sense.

It's quite a common thing, it's the same with MKWii & MK7, the game is basically just guessing and predicting where you are or will be most of the time. Another point of notice when it's just "guessing" is when everyone goes through the item box rows and only 1-2 will break, is because it's not quite sure who ran through the boxes. It's only showing the ones that are following the same path for a long amount of time. If you drive wild and swerve a lot then it has a hard time figuring out where you are which is a lot of how people avoid items and do other strange things, but if you keep a straight path it can track you easier, which is also how you get hit by items easier. Other online games that aren't Nintendo based have the same issues, just at different degrees.
The item's are pretty flawed and the game is running on smoke and mirrors a lot of the time.
I know it must be happening back at me as well because sometimes the red shell siren is going nuts behind me and I'll never get hit even though I know I should have.

I'm having a hard time believing they didn't touch the items in the last patch, because Boomerangs and Mega Horns are more common than ever now, but aside from that it feels like every item is more likely to be obtained more than previously. More stars, bullets and triple shells of both varieties. I'm not getting races with just mushrooms & coins for 3 laps anymore, although they're still the two most common items it seems.

You would need to unlock and finish all 150cc cups.

You don't need to beat Mirror Mode.

Yeah. The game LOOKS smooth because it handles a race with 12 persons so good. However, if one driver has a bad internet connection, it is not the game's fault. The game tries to smoothen the actions of this driver. You see him driving normally where it actually are jumps and the game interpolates between these jumps. Therefore you can hit him on positions where he isn't actually present.

That is all lag. The game is wonderfully playable even with bad internet connections, but then you have to live with some flaws. Smash Bros. is not playable with a bad connection on the other hand. Everything has to slow down there.

That lag theory doesn't explain what happened with my red shell.

Of course it does.

I agree, despite the weird things that happen online, for a 12-player game it does handle really well. With Smash Bros, that isn't always the case, that's even in 1vs1 matches.

I think what you're describing is pretty accurate regarding what happened with the 4.0 update. The forgiveness towards users with bad connections are now WAY too high, which affects players with good connections. I guess that way less people get disconnects during races now, but that's a "bug fix" that only has resulted inaccuracy.

I'm using using a wired connection on Regional online, and I have noticed big difference with the 4.0 update. The randomness of the online is way bigger than in 3.0, and a player with lag can easily be seen on the map. Often the player with the lag wins races, and can keep on playing race after race with that lag. That didn't happen before.

The online lag issues really became clear in my last race.

I was on the Animal Crossing course and just before me and a red Yoshi were about to hit a ramp and go into flying mode, I hit him with a shell and he spun out and fell but then instantly flew back up in the air with his glider blazing infront of me. Untitled

I'm pretty sure this has always been in the game but for some reason it's becoming more apparant after the latest DLC release. Makes me wonder just how different everyone's perception of the race is between 12 players. How much of what's going on is actually really happening and how much is just us seeing holographic images of events and the game compensating to keep up with it?

A new patch probably to include Bullets and Stars for first place and Coins for people in 2nd-12th and anything else to screw up the item roulette even more.

Okay, anyone not able to connect with anyone for DLC2 pack now? I can't find anyone to play with anymore... but the DLC1 & No DLC work normal pretty much.

There's Hitler & N-word Miis running on Mario Kart with 12k & 11k points. Nice modding there Ninty

Yesterday on the subway stage I had 3 bullet bills in a row.I was in 5th place when I got the first one,and end up winning the race,I thought that was strange and cheap. I like to play fair, but that was weird. Never happen to me before.

I see Hiltler Mii's all the time and a male's private part as their name and face looking like one. I wish their was a way to report inappropriate Mii's...

OMG I HAVE NEVER seen it go that far. But yeah I see Hitlers all the time and I agree, I wish we could report them. You'd think the words would at least be blocked but nope, much more important things like Ravioli are blocked out.

Edit:
WOW! REVELATIONS (aka old news for some probably)! I just found out why Ravioli is banned. Also Violet and Violin are banned. There's a word in there that's a bad word in French. You'd think they would have learned their lesson after Cofagrigus in Pokemon...

Why should a Hitler Mii be reported?

If it's sexually inappropriate, I could understand but I've seen Jesus and Snoop Dogg Miis and I thought those were funny. I'd probably think Hitler would be funny to see too.

Rexcalibr

Well, that's the American mentality for you. It's actually sad, but there is nothing you can do about it. I honestly don't care about the way the Miis look. There seems to be a 12 year-old in every lobby that thinks he's funny when he creates an especially bad looking Mii. I say let the kid be. What I hate however, are the annoying people that spam messages. I haven't found a way to disable them, so that really gets on my nerves.

Personally, I find the people that intentionally wait until the last second to cast a vote for the course to be much more annoying.
