Noob question: What is the purpose of the coins besides unlocking things? If that's the only purpose, its kind of lame how the cap it at 10...
More coins means you go faster! That's why the cap is at 10, otherwise players can get too OP.
Formally called brewsky before becoming the lovable, adorable Yoshi.
Now playing:
Final Fantasy XIV (PC) | The Legend of Zelda: Link's Awakening (Switch) | Celeste (Switch)
So I know the coins cap at 10 for reasons stated above and that you also unlock kart parts with them, but my question is when you lose coins i.e. when you get hit by an item or fall off the road does those coins get subtracted from you total towards the kart parts?

That's not actually how it works. The coins you have at the end of the race get added to your total. Unfortunately, this means that you can only get 10 coins at a time. 40 per race, if you have other players with you. And don't you need 10000 for the gold parafoil?

Yes 10000 coins are needed for the gold glider part, too much if you ask me.
I've heard that whenever you enter any tournaments, coins collected by other drivers also go to your total as the game counts it has a group effort. If that's true just enter a few tourneys; you easily get hundreds of coins doing that if rivals racers are good enough.

Are you sure that's how it works? You get a part for every 50 coins, and then later for every 100 coins. That means you'll need to play at least two races to get one part, and I'm pretty sure I got a new part after every Grand Prix, at least during my first couple of playthroughs.

That would explain why I've seen some people claim to have unlocked the Gold Glider fairly easily, whereas it took me well over 100 hours I think, considering I don't play in tournaments.

250 races with 4 players. Races typically take about 3-4 minutes, I'm gonna say four to make this simple. 15 races in an hour. 250 divided by 15 is 16 and 2/3's. Even with 4 players getting max coin counts in every single race, this would take 16 hours and 40 minutes of racing in order to get the Gold Glider. Good for longevity, but completionists will be very mad. And we are. For the sake of pointing it out, if you remove the 4-player aspect and go solo, that's back to 1000 races and will take 66 hours and 40 minutes of racing. Enjoy~
And @Nintendo6400 No. No, you don't. Luigi U is the DLC, so you'll only be getting the main game.

This is a reminder to tell your friends to buy the interesting console before the free game Mario Kart deal runs out!
Or maybe we'll get more deals like this if Wii U sales don't go up enough for Nintendo's liking so maybe don't do that?!
I'm pretty sure another deal like Mario Kart 8 will happen when Super Smash Bros. U comes out and Zelda U comes out. Heck even Bayonetta 2 will prolly have some kind of deal to increase sales.
@Starblazer That happens quite a lot, it's just the lag online.
I've had times where I've been in first by a mile and it's still said I've come second.
