Topic: Hosting a MK8 Tournament For My Family, Would Like More Ideas For Awards!

This weekend my immediate family (My sister, her husband, my parents, my wife's parents, my wife, and I) are going to get together online to play MK8 and I'm going to make some trophies out of Amiibos to give out afterwards. I just need some help coming up with what some of the awards should be. Any suggestions would be much appreciated!

A little background: My family all really likes Mario Kart and since we all live far away from each other, playing online occasionally is great. This will be the first time we can all meet up at the same time since playing MK Wii, so I wanted to surprise them all with a little extra something at the end. None of us are hardcore players, though. The moms aren't the best and struggle with even 50cc a little bit, but that's okay. I know they don't practice a lot and they're still having fun anyway. Us children will probably be the most competitive, but we've also been known to put that aside to drive slow to watch "The Battle of The Moms" as we like to call it. The dads are somewhere in the middle skill wise.

With all that said, I want to make some awards that pretty much anyone can get that also won't just feel like they're getting the award just to get one, like a participation award. For us younger folk, and even the dads if they surprise us, there'll be Gold, Silver, and Bronze Mario Amiibos (custom spray painted, not the legit ones) up for grabs for 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place overall. There will also be a Gold and Silver Peach for 1st and 2nd in the Mom Division. Not 100% if we'll do a Dad Division, something tells me they won't like it as much as the moms will. And then from there, have other painted Amiibos for "Special Categories." We're thinking that we'd pick Amiibos that we can find and make an award that's in the same vein as their quality of character. To give you an idea of what these trophies will look like, I made an album of what I've made so far here. http://imgur.com/a/WbWqM

A couple of ideas we've had for Special Categories:

  • Peach (from SSB): "Most Courteous" - You mostly kept to yourself and didn't bump and/or shoot players often. This fit with SSB Peach since she looks very proper in her stance.
  • Bowser (MP): "Most Vicious" - You played aggressively and relentlessly attacked all of the players you could.
  • Diddy Kong or Donkey Kong: "Gone Bananas" - Maybe you were the worst offender for hitting people with bananas? Or you hit the most bananas? Or "Monkeying Around" - Could have just seemed to have the most fun and goofed off during the tournament. Not 100% on this one yet.
  • Toad: <No name yet> - Boosted with a mushroom to take 1st at the very last moment.

Hopefully that gives you an idea of what we're going for, but I'm also open to other ideas that could be even better! These Special Categories were inspired by the likes of Goldeneye where at the end you'd get an award of "Most Armorer," "Most Accurate," etc. A couple things I want to try to stay away from are awards that are a negative, like "Most Cowardly," since this is supposed to just be a fun thing. I'm also trying to stay away from something that requires me to try and count up how much something happens, like most coins collected, since I don't know of an easy way to tally that. I am hoping that through the session, there'll be 'big upset' types of events, like Toad's that would be easy to track and actually feels like an accomplishment too, but I know I can't rely on these to happen.

Ideally, I'd like everyone to get one, hopefully two trophies. So with 8 people altogether, that's 16 trophies. With what I mentioned above, I have 10 thought up to give out. Characters that are left that I think I could get Amiibos for (the stock on them is crazy right now!):

  • Yoshi (MP or SSB): Not sure yet.
  • Luigi (MP or SSB): Maybe something with the Luigi stare?
  • Mario (SSB): Could be for dad awards or using fireballs in game in some epic way.
  • Link: Not sure what to do, but he's a playable character now, haha!
  • Pikachu: Maybe a good use of lightning? Everyone hates to get hit after going off a jump!

I can get my hands on any of the other commons, but I'm not sure which others could fit the Mario Kart vibe.

TLDR: Having a (mostly casual) play session in MK8 online with my family. I'd love help figuring out types of awards, made out of custom spray painted Amiibos, to give out! Examples of the of Amiibo trophies can be found here: http://imgur.com/a/WbWqM

Any suggestions or advice would be greatly appreciated!

It's great to see you taking initiative to provide a fun activity for your family! As for presents though, not trying to be a downer but parents would much prefer something else over a toy figure. If it was up to me, I'll probably get some gaming related apparels etc.

Thanks for your feedback! I do appreciate the honesty, but I have a feeling the idea of little trophies will be a hit with them, they're not quite the typical parents anyway, haha. For example, the in-law parents collect little knickknacks, like matchbox cars, McDonald's toys, etc, so these'd fit right in. My parents are a similar situation, although not big into it as the in-laws and collect different types of different knickknacks.

Hey there. Great idea!! I think a good award could be for a player who goes from low like 10th/12th to 1st in the final lap.

Oh, I like that! Wonder what Amiibo to match that with? Maybe MP Luigi? His character is always ripped on and rarely gets picked first, but sometimes he can surprise you! Bonus points for the MP Luigi having his hand almost making a #1 symbol. So I think he'd be a good fit with this award, but I'm open to suggestions!

Now, I just have to think of a good name for it. I really want to do "Started from the bottom now we're here" but that's too long, just "Now we're here" is short enough, but I don't know if it's enough to get the reference. Hmm, gotta think on this!

Thank you for the idea!

Should be Bowser, ref: The tortoise and the hare Name: "Slow and steady" (wins the race) i.e.?

A couple of other ideas for prizes:

  • "Uncle Scrouge" - The one who collects most coins/gets only coins from items, amiibo Toad or Pac-Man?
  • One for drifting
  • "Second time around" - One for the boomerang, if it hits on it's way back
  • "Tooting your own horn" - For the most honking, amiibo Wario

It sounds fantastic, if my family ever get into Mario Kart I'll steal your idea ;D

Those sound like great ideas too! I like that reference with the tortoise, I wish they had a regular Koopa Amiibo though, that'd make it perfect!

I'd really like to do some of those other award ideas, but I can't think of an easy way to track those. I can try to review replays, but I know I can only keep 12 of the most recent ones, plus save 6, but I don't know how many races we're going to do, probably more than that. Plus, re-reviewing the counts for coins on every player would be pretty tedious that way unless there's an easier way :/ I am hoping that when something like the boomerang thing happens, SOMEONE will say something about it afterwards, whether to gloat or groan lol. Otherwise I think I'm just going to have to guess if someone did something good like that in a race and then save a replay at the end and double check later. Drifting and tooting your own horn should be easier to track though

Thank you for the great ideas though! I hope I can find a good way to track them!

Oh, and you totally should steal this idea, I think it'll be a blast!

I think Luigi or Bowser are both great ideas for a trophy and for the name hmmm maybe last minute hero?? I have a gaming club and we are having a grand tournament soon so yes i will be definitely using your idea I will probably handpaint yoshis as I have lots of experience painting Warhammer models so I will give each a new paint job but will give one to each member (its 7 plus me so its not to expensive fortunately)

I'd love to hand paint these, they'd probably turn out a lot better that way, but I just don't have the skillset or patience for that
