Topic: GCN-controller or Pro Controller for Smash?

Posts 1 to 20 of 30

I can't decide whether I want to buy the SSB Wii U + GCN-adapter and a GCN-controller or buy the game standalone and a Pro Controller beside it. The Gamecube controller can only be used in Smash, but it's cheaper and friends who have Gamecubes can bring their own controllers. The Pro Controller, on the other hand, can be used in just about any game I have and it's wireless. Any help?

And yes, you saw that right, this question thread is NOT playing the pronoun game! Seriously you guys, stop doing that.

E: Already chose the Pro Controller, don't need any more advice.

Buy the pro controller. Your friends can still use their GC controllers, whether you have one or not. Besides, in my opinion the pro controller is the better one of those two in almost every way.

For Smash of course I'd go for the GCN controller because you will have friends that will have GCN controllers and you don't have to spend as much money buying new controllers. However, if your going to be playing a lot of games then I'd go pro simply because it works with a lot more and will also work for Smash. Personally I think you should just go with the pro controller if you plan on playing games besides Smash a lot with friends, games like Nintendo Land and ZombiU. However, if you only plan on playing Smash with your friends and just solo on everything else I'd go GCN.

However, I'm going to have to disagree with Cia above me, I think that the GCN controller is better in a lot of ways, but that's opinions.

I hope I can find a good deal with a couple of GCN controllers together for a good price. Btw, did they confirm the GCN controllers are only to be used in Smash?

How many wii remotes do you have? Those Hori and PDP Gamecube controllers that act as classic controllers really seem like the best of both worlds - Gamecube controller precision and compatibility with everything - and if I didn't already pro and GC controllers that's what I'd go with.

GC controllers, easily. Not only will you save money just from getting two/three of them instead of two/three Pro Controllers, their design also perfectly compliments Smash's control scheme, since all face buttons are organized around the A Button, making it incredibly easy to reach all of them without having to jump between them with your thumb.
Besides, the odds of having friends who still have a GC controller or two is infinitely higher than them owning Pro Controllers.

However, the downside is that, until some games get patched, GC controller support is limited to Smash itself for now, so a Pro Controller might be favourable for other multiplayer games.

GCN controller. You'll save money, better controls, you'll have more controllers as spare for playing GCN games on a GCN or Wii console and the Masterpieces section of the Smash Direct 3 days ago suggests Nintendo isn't telling us all info about the adapter.

I didn't notice until i read this that they actually didn't show the available titles past 1993 in the Nintendo Direct. Interesting!

The Pro Controller is pretty much an essential accessory for the Wii U anyway so I'd go with that. I mean if you're going to play local-multi you're going to want to have the ability to play four players with games like Mario Kart also. The GC controller may be the best controller for Smash and it'll help you boost the number of players you can have but it won't help you in other games.

Also your friends may have GC controllers, that's a thing. Odds are they'll also have WiiMotes and Classic Controllers

I'd rather say the hori gcn style classic controllers or the Wii u pro controller, as they both are compatabile with smash. The gcn adapter is more for the whiney fans, as the Wii u pro controller will work just fine.

This. I played Smash Bros. E3 @ Best Buy, and I personally really liked the clickiness of the Pro controller's inputs. The Hori GCN controller makes more sense. Wired vs. wireless won't make a difference for 99.9% of people. The only difference I read about the original GCN and Hori one, is that the PDP is a bit bigger, but I can't say for sure, because I haven't seen one, I'm going Pro.

Considering that GCN controllers are the most comfortable controllers ever created, I'd go with them.

They did show later games through gameplay with Kirby Super Star being the latest. That's 1996, which is brushing right up against the N64. Regardless if it's in the game now, or later with a patch, will this finally force the release of the N64 VC?

See those controller icons? See what's missing?

Of course, this is Sakurai we're talking about. He is a troll, after all.

EDIT: Personally, I see enough room for an additional icon.

I've decided. I'm going to buy the bundle with an adaptor, and a Pro controller separate. My friends can use their GCN controllers when they come over (for the record, I don't have one of those myself and I wasn't planning on ever buying more than one). Even if they ever add support for games besides Smash, those will also have Pro Controller support (most likely), plus I don't really like the GCN controller for anything other than Smash anyway.

There is any word about you can use the wii u pro controller and the game cube controller in the same sesion? What I mean is that if I have 1 game cube controller the rest of the players can use the pro controller?

You can use any controller combination you want. Given you have the peripherals to actually use them.

If you have played any Smash game before with a GameCube controller, get the GameCube adapter. Any other control scheme will feel unnatural and weird in my experience. Once you GC Smash, you can't go back.

If you haven't though, buy a Pro Controller. It will be far more useful in the long run with the compatibility with other games.
