Why not a 2.5D Super Metroid-style game like this fan made project?
A game like that would be better on 3DS. Wii U Metroid should be large scale, open ended, and impressive, so Prime style is more befitting the console experience. Plus the Gamepad lends itself very well to Prime's mechanics, as the screenshot is trying to convey.
Interesting concept, although I don't think visor/beam switching would work very well on the gamepad. Touching the gamepad to navigate through those while also having to dodge and keep your lock-on on enemies seems like it may be a bit too much going on at once.
I think console Primes may return someday, though. Who knows, maybe Federation Force will do really well and show Nintendo that the market is open to more Metroid.

It could work if they map the lock on to ZL. Then you can use one hand to dodge and lock on and the other to use the touch screen. Then they could have a control option to swap the Control Sticks and ZL/ZR for left handed people (use your right hand to move around the right Control Stick to dodge and hold ZR to lock on, and use your left hand on the touch screen).
So the Star Fox Zero concept of asymmetric aiming (that people are whinging about) with the same UI, graphics and gameplay of the 3 Prime games (A.K.A 'rehashing' that people with a Kyurem avatar are complaining about constantly) is the Metroid game we deserve and is a travesty that it isn't happening? That there is hypocrisy. Not that anyone takes these people seriously anyway.
