It’s actually a massive difference. I have the old one and playing it outside especially if it’s sunny is difficult. If you have the chance to get the 101 version it’s definetely the way to go

Still waiting for my package to even ship...at this rate it'll be next week. I'm just too excited about the Micro.

@ReaderRagfish When looked at in the right perspective, it IS the best option. If you only want to play on a GBA SP, then the AGS-101 is the best there is. You keep comparing to other devices, which for all we know, might not be relevant at all. Who knows? Perhaps the OP already has a DS Lite, but he isn't interested in using that for his GBA games.

Personally, I also don't like that, because of the cartridge sticking out, for example.

And yes, the Micro due to the form factor. And the smaller screen. Could be a hassle for some, if they play games with a lot of text. Going back to such a small screen certainly isn't preferable, then.

@ReaderRagfish must be something wrong with mine but I have 2 and they are both the same ags101. The option for the light is on or off

As a point for the original unlit gba, it’s far easier to replace batteries with that one, so chances are it will have a longer life span.

@ReaderRagfish about the micro faceplates, the only way to know for sure is getting one. They’re like what, 2 dollars with free shipping from China?

What do you guys think, should I wait for the Nintendo Online Service and see if Nintendo even hints at eventually releasing GBA titles via that service? OR should I take the dive and pick up that modded GBA I have been drooling over for the last 6 months? (the Metal Jesus Rocks Ultimate GBA 2.0)

@ReaderRagfish I find the GBA micro to be too small to comfortably play. I could just get find an ags 101 SP that's an option too I suppose.

@ReaderRagfish
Quick question about playing GBA games.
I played GBA games on NDS Lite but for some reason, i felt quite dissatisfied with NDS Lite sound volume quality (Too Quiet).
Can i use a Portable Blue tooth speaker to increase the sound volume of NDS Lite ?
Which is better, playing GBA games on AGS 101 model or NDS Lite ?

@ReaderRagfish Yeah I am looking on ebay and it does seem like I could get a modded GBA with an AGS 101 screen and an Everdrive 5 for less than half the cost of the metal Jesus ultimate. Though I'd miss out on the upgraded speaker and changable clock speed.

@ReaderRagfish You're probably right about that. I am planning on enjoying Pokemon FR and Emerald, Fire Emblem and FE the Sacred Stones, Advance Wars 1 and 2, Zoids Legacy and and probably Golden Sun. At the very least. I also want to see if I can get some Pokemon rom hacks to run on an actual device. Like Uranium and Liquid Crystal. I realize many of those games are on the Wii U eshop but the Wii U game pad doesn't even work when I walk more than 8 feet away from the console. If I had some indication that Nintendo would be releasing these titles on Switch within the next year or so, I'd just wait for that. But so far Nintendo seems uninterested in Virtual Console or some successor on Switch. Further the smaller size of a GBA does actually make it more suited to playing when I am on a crowded train - which is relatively often. (I only play the Switch when I have elbow room.)

@ReaderRagfish Zoids Legacy isn't admittedly a great game. But I loved Zoids as a kid and it was a game that took Zoids and characters from the various anime and model kits and through them all together into a simple RPG that pleased me to no end. It's not great, but it's not terrible either, and with my heavy nostalgia goggles I still like it. Or at least assume I will. I haven't played it since I was in high school, almost a decade ago. I would definitely be open to more fun GBA titles as that is an era of gaming I quite love. I'd also like to pick up the Mother/Earthbound games with the English patches on GBA.

@ReaderRagfish Yeah I am also interested in finally properly playing Final Fantasy 6 and FF Tactics. I actually did play DBZ Legacy of Goku 1 and 2 back in the day and I'd like to see how well they hold up. I remember them being really hard though. I am also interested in the Harvest Moon games on the system.

Eel

If you're taking recommendations, in my little gba micro pouch I always carry five games, I rotate them every now and then, but these usually include:

Harvest Moon: Friends of Mineral Town
Sonic Advance + Sonic Pinball Party
Super Monkey Ball Jr
Dr Mario & Puzzle League
A Link to the Past

I call those my evergreens.

Some other interesting games I have include Yoshi's Island, Final Fantasy Dawn of Souls, Final Fantasy 6 (used to have 4 too), Kirby's Nightmare in Dreamland, Pokemon Mystery Dungeon, or any other Pokemon game TBH, The Sims Bustin' Out (The Urbz is a great sequel too but I don't have it).

Some guilty pleasures: Sim City 2000, Spyro Orange.

Special mention to Wario Ware Inc and Wario Ware Twisted. If I still had Inc I would add to my list of evergreens. Twisted is too bulky and sadly my copy is kinda glitchy now.

Just started Minish Cap for the first time. One of the only Zelda games I haven't played.

Only just got to the first dungeon area but so far it's significantly better than the other Capcom games. I didn't think much of the Oracle games at all.

The GBA/SNES level of games have aged incredibly well.

While I do enjoy the Oracle games, I agree that Minish Cap is the best of the bunch. It's a short, clever Zelda game that has aged quite well IMO. It also keeps with the tradition of referencing some of the other games.

You can extend the playtime by going after all the figurines.

Currently playing: Mario & Luigi: Bowser's Inside Story + Bowser Jr's Journey, Ys VIII: Lacrimosa of Dana (Switch)

@ReaderRagfish Yeah, I think I am gonna go with the modded original GBA with the AGS 101 screen. I am amazed at the color options to choose from on ebay. Do you think I should go for a glass screen or not?

@Dezzy Thinking of trying it out with all the good reviews I've seen. But one says it's kinda repetitive and short compared to previous GBA ones so, that's that.

Back in June, 2017 I beat all of the 3 GBA Starfy games with some help from gamefaqs. Even without understanding anything, it was a great time (good platforming transcends language barriers, it seems).

@ReaderRagfish The DS title was the only released in english (and the last one in the series), and after I beat it I was curious to play the GBA titles.
The bosses in this one are much easier than the GBA ones (well, except for the final one) But still it has a special place in my memories. I love how relaxing the ocean setting is, and it has some of that Kirby charm.

This music from the game really stood out for me:
