Yep, Super Mario World is a very great platformer, and a perfect choice for a launch title back in 1990/1991. I like searching every nook and cranny for those secret exits. I was very surprised at what happened to the World map after I completed the Special map for the first time.
I wish I could help you out on this with some very more narrow level specifics, but back in 1991 I played this game religiously for 2 weeks solid and unlocked all 96* or whatever it was completeness at 100%. One thing I don't think I'd ever purely be sure of is if I love this one or SMB3 more, but I tend to give that one the nod as just felt more diverse and a little trickier too.

I remember as a former NES owner loving Super Mario Bros. 3 to death, actually not liking the 'style' of the game. I found it back then too childish in comparison with Mario 3, haha. But that changed around when i started playing it in stores, at these SNES pods, and it became a huge favourite when i finally got hold of a SNES deck which included the game, bought it on holiday in Germany in summer '93. Recently i completed the entire game since many years. Star Road is still quite difficult at times
I think I've always enjoyed Super Mario World more than Super Mario Bros. 3 (which is a good game also). @William90 - of course it saves after you beat Bowser.
I have a problem, when it says "the end", what am I supposed to do?
I have finally completed the game, but I have this problem to. Does it save? I've tried resetting but I have to beat Bowser again.
I haven't found all the levels- should I reset the game anyway and find them, then defeat Bowser again?
Well when you defeat Bowser, you must reset the game because the story finishes there, and will not save. But if you want to go further exploring i suggest you do not enter Bowser's fort, but the rest of the maps
I was just playing it, and just noticed how different it is from previous Mario games. There are various unlockable stages and alternate paths. Really, I'm actually considering that it's superior to SMB3 because it gives you more to do.
Theoretically, it should've made it superior, but in the end it became my least favorite Mario game. All of those additions just took away from what I loved about Super Mario Bros. 1-3, and Yoshi's Island refined everything Super Mario did wrong, improved everything it did right, and added so many new elements it couldn't even be properly compared to the original games, thus making it a great experience in its own right. In the end, some times having more to do isn't as important as doing something done right.
Super Mario World is my favourite 2D Mario game, but maybe that is because it is also the easiest (if you know which levels to take to complete the game).
I prefer Super Mario 3 to Super Mario World, because of the variety of the powerups, and It had a lot of cool secrets to it such as the white mushroom house, the flutes, the raft in world 3, etc. And Super Mario Bros 3 felt more challenging to me for some reason.
I'm always confused about how many exits you have to find to finish the game properly. I currently have found 92 but I've been told it's actually 96 - I'm pretty certain I've finished them all, though. Might have to look into this.
If I remember correctly but I may be wrong I think some of the Star Worlds have two different exits in the worlds that dont change the map in anyway. Also I think the special stages like Gnarly and Funky and whatever else they are called have two exits but dont do anything on the map. Of course its been years since I played it so I could be wrong. What I use to do it save it at a Ghost House before I went and beat Bowser that way if you didnt find everything you can just load the game right before you fight Bowesr after hitting the Reset button when you get that great THE END message.
I always liked SMB 3 over World but it was close. Yeah the colors were better in World than SMB3 and of course there was Yoshi, but I liked the worlds in SMB3 better plus I love all the suits that 3 had to offer especially the Hammer Bros suit. I also think the Airships were a nice touch rather than doing a castle at every level. Now comparing the Super Maior All Stars version of SMB3 and SMW well than they are both equal. Of course SMB3 has the suits but World has Yoshi.
I have both games on my Wii VC and I must say I am glad that I can suspend play with SMB3. Before I got it on VC I only beat 3 once and that was because of how long it was. You need to set aside a few hours if you plan on playing SMB3 through if you have the NES cart.
