I tried to beat Super Mario Bros. 3 a while ago without using the flute. I'm on World 6 right now, and now I'm almost tempted to use it. But I want to beat it fair and square, it's just some of those stages are hard, and I love a good challenge.
It's pretty hard for me. I've only gotten to World 2 without using any Warp Whistles. Maybe I could get a little farther if I tried for a couple hours straight. In Super Mario World, I've only made it to Lemmy's Castle in World 3.
I have a feeling that I'm going to be using the help mode in NSMBW a lot just to get through the game in single-player.
Same here, dude, 100%.
I've always found the Mario Games pretty hard, but I actually got to World 2 in SMB3 with 5 lives remaining, with the second half tackled on my first try. It can't be that hard.
Since it's an easier version, I need to point out that I made it to Lemmy's Castle in World 3 of the GBA version of Super Mario World, not the SNES version.
Ash: Professor Oak, how's your Bulbasaur?
Prof. Oak: Oh, it only hurts when I sit.
...
Prof. Oak: It's only Chansey if Krabby won't let go. Bye, now.
Ash: I don't think I'm going to call him anymore.

I didn't know the GBA version was easier than the Super NES one. The GBA version is the only one I played, and I still suck at it.

In the SNES version, if you get hit when you're Super Mario/Luigi with a power-up, you lose the power-up, become regular Mario/Luigi, and lose the item you're carrying. In the same situation in the GBA version, you just lose the power-up while still remaining as Super Mario/Luigi and keep the item you're carrying. The GBA version also allows you to save the game anywhere, even during levels, while the SNES version only lets you save after certain levels.

Hard to the point where I think it's broken to be honest. I got to the end of the 2nd world (desert). It's not just the one-hit deaths, but how far back the game puts you between continues. Having to replay the last three stages to get to the boss again and doing that over and over and over got really really old.
@sean - dude if I ever get a continue while playing this game, I just start the game again because it's too hard to make any decent progress!!! Then the next time I play i just make sure I pick up more lives along the way.
It is harder than super mario world, but imho I reckon it's easier than Super Mario bros 2 (The pick up vegetable one). The hardest thing about the game was the fact you can't go back to levels you have completed, which really takes some of the fun away. When you have to play in fear of dying without the chance to go back to get more lives, it makes things stressful. I remember sweating more playing this game than any other game I have ever played.

Screw this game!
Thanks for the laugh Mate!
World 8 got pretty hard once you got past all the vehicle levels....... The Lost Levels is by far the hardest Mario games in Creation!

Yeah I was going to say World 8 the levels with the tanks- CRAZY! to be honest I prefer Mario All Stars versions of all the Mario games, you've got two run buttons (Y & X) and the jump buttons (A & B) you can hold the buttons down, a lot easier than the NES pad or Wii Mote!
I do hope that Super Mario All-Stars is released on VC, Nintendo would sell Millions!!!!!!!!!
