Fine points warioswoods!

I agree. I hadn't really thought of a lot of that, perhaps because it has been too long since I've played Yoshi's Island. I still think there is a lot that has been left behind though that is worth revisiting:

  • Particular bosses -- Mouser, Fry Guy, Birdo (all varieties), Wart -- and yes I know Birdo and others reappear now, but not as bosses.
  • The magic potion and subspace (not the SSBB subspace, mind you )
  • Most importantly, the mask that chases you when you have the key!

Maybe some of these elements have been recycled in Yoshi's Island and I just don't remember. If that's the case, I will just have to start complaining more and more that it's not on VC.

I'd love to see Fry Guy or Phanto (mask) reappear in a future game.

As for the VC, they really do need to get Yoshi's Island on there, but I'd also like to see Super Mario All Stars. I haven't downloaded any of Mario 1 - 3 yet (or Lost Levels) since I keep holding out for All Stars with its greatly enhanced visuals; I wonder what the chances are of us ever seeing it appear. On the one hand, it would possibly reduce revenue from the 4 NES titles (which added together cost 2100 points, if I'm not mistaken, versus only 800 for an SNES title), but those have been out long enough it seems for them to go ahead and give us All Stars as well.

Dream big... Nintendo wants more money, and those games are all selling very well, so releasing a game that would replace all those sales and give them less money would be an awful business move.

Hmmm, I would pay a premium for it if necessary -- maybe 1500, which is a reasonable savings for buying 4 games in one -- but you are probably right that they won't bother to put it on the shop until Mario 1-3 drop in sales, or in other words never.

It would be nice if they would at least put it up there for the same price as all four games put together (2100 points, provided we're not including SMW) and give people the option of buying the All-Stars version as one big lump or the original NES versions separately.

What! I love Mario 2 USA's music! I always end up humming it for the rest of the day when I play the game. Take that back.

Also, since Mario 2 is always inevitably compared to Zelda II, I must chime in and say that Zelda II is not only a great game, but my favorite in all the series. Like Mario 2 USA, it'd be super great if it ever got a spiritual sequel, though I'm not banking on either game ever being made, sadly.

Maybe it won't be remade but its influence in other series is pretty remarkable. In fact look how many characters from SMB 2 have continued on in the Mario series. Shy Guys, Birdo, Snifitts, all regularly show up in other Mario games. Even Animal Crossing uses Wart jr. who I assume is the child of the last boss. I think Nintendo honors Mario 2, but in a different way.

Wart even appears in Link's Awakening.

Wasn't SMB2 the first Mario title to introduce the different character abilities, ie Luigi can jump farther but is less steady on his feet, Daisy can glide with her umbrella. I know these are the same abilities the Doki Doki Panic characters had but in all future Mario titles Luigi/Daisy have these same characteristics.

Some one correct me if im wrong on this.

Adam

Actually, "Lost Levels" had different physics for each character. Mario controlled traditionally while Luigi could jump higher but was more slippery to control. Doki Doki Panic took this farther but wasn't first. Also, just a curiosity... Daisy? Umbrella? I thought it was Princess Toadstool, and I don't see an umbrella in the animation. Was this the explanation given in the instructions? I'm pretty sure Daisy is from the Super Mario Land series, though.

The parasol was first featured in Donkey Kong as one of Pauline's lost items you could collect for points in certain stages. The official art for SMB2 shows Toadstool/Peach (pink dress, Daisy always wears yellow though her hair has fluctuated from blond to brunette), and she kinda floats along with the dress, not any kind of parasol. Toadstool first used the parasol as a weapon in Super Mario RPG.

To be fair, though, Toad being quick and Peach's affinity for floating first appeared in this game, iirc. I think it's also the game where Mario is first singled out as the most well-rounded character of them all; he's not really the best at jumping high, jumping long, running fast, or at pulling things out of the ground, but he's decent enough to not suck outright at anything, either. :3

Ha, indeed -- according to SMB2, Mario is just the mediocre everyman amongst his fellow adventurers, but fortunately also lacks any one area of weakness.

I'd like to cite Toad's incredible strength as something carried over to Wario's Woods. In SMB2, of course, he could pick up vegetables faster than anyone and with zero straining-animation, and as the protagonist of Wario's Woods, he can lift unbelievable quantities, like an entire column ten times his height.

The first time around I missed it and only owned and played SMB and SMB3. Going back to it now, although I know it's Doki Doki Panic in a SMB skin, it just doesn't fit in the series for me.

Game play mechanics are very different from every other Mario game and I just found it a little lackluster and boring. Not to say it's a bad game, just I personally didn't enjoy it as much as the other NES Mario titles.

Schoolboy error from me there with the Daisy/Toadstool mix-up/Umbrella but you catch my drift

gameking23

Just thought of a cool idea, at least I think it would be cool. Anyway here it is wouldn't it be cool if they released Doki Doki Panic on the VC.

I rule when it comes to games. So deal with it.

warioswoods

Which brings up a good question, to which I should probably know the answer but simply don't for certain: have they released any Famicom Disk System games under the NES section on the VC, or even under the Famicom section of the Japanese VC? I'm thinking that they haven't, and I don't believe the emulation would be all that different, but the saving feature would have to handled a bit differently than the NES-cartridges which saved using a battery.

Zelda was on Disk, and I'm sure Japan has that. Mario 2 was, too (for some reason).
I don't think America got any. We don't have that many imports. But I'm not sure.

SMB2 is the closest I'll ever get to an acid trip, so I can appreciate it for that.
