Well this will be an unpopular topic....but think about it....isn't the whole star collecting thing just a way of making each stage artificially longer than it really is? I'd rather have more stages and environments to explore, rather than just 15 of the same.
Super Mario World and Super Mario Bros. 3 may have been linear, but you got a lot more variety.
If you bring up SMB3 and SM64 you bring the 2D vs. 3D argument and let's not go there. The Stars thing didn't feel too artificial to me as some seemed well hid while others altered the level design. Saying SM64 is overated is blasphemy I tell you, BLASPHEMY!!!

It's all about exploration. Just because Kirby Air Ride City Trial has one environment, that didn't stop people from exploring it to every inch was known. That's what 64 is about, exploring. Super Mario Galaxy takes the linear approach ala SMB3 and World, while Sunshine took 64's non-linear approach. I remember I would spend days just trying to find every nook and cranny of the courses. You don't need a lot of levels because the levels included are huge, filled with hidden stuff and exploration.
Yes, I'm a bad explainer, but do you catch my drift.
I have to say that without it, 3-d platforming would be a lot different, in a bad way. But I think it is a bit overrated. Mario's later games are better. Not by much but still.
Super Mario 64 set a very high bar, one that only Nintendo (and maybe Rare) have reached since.
I LOVE collecting stars! And only 7 per level isn't too bad at all, I mean who got tired of scaling Tall Tall Mountain, or traversing Rainbow Ride, or exploring Haunted House not me! Wahoo!
What did you think of Tick Tock Clock? I must have fallen off 100 times....woo hoo

I'm one of those people that doesn't love Mario 64. No disputing it's an influential game, but I thinks it pretty boring compared to Mario 3 and Mario World. And it seems like plenty of the classic Mario elements aren't even in the game like the fire suit.

I was never a huge fan of Mario 64 (Sunshine is my favorite 3D Mario title by far) but, just like Corbie said, it made advancements and that's why it deserves the praise it gets. Personally, though, I think it is overrated, but it is a lot better than Galaxy

So...you don't like going back to the levels because you die alot?
Its still one of the best 3D platformers made in my opinion. I will still pop this in and clear my save file and go back for 120 stars. The difficulty is really high. The levels have a great variety in enviroments details. The controls were spot on for the 64 controller. I LOVE This Game.

With all respect to the Mario franchise (one of my favorites if not my favorite) Galaxy didn't live up to my expectations, I enjoyed more Paper Mario than Galaxy, I have it and I haven't even finished it. I don't know if it's fair to call it overrated bue Mario in 3D it's just not the same (to me at least)
I got Super Mario 64 with a used N64 a while back, and it's definitely groundbreaking for its time. It changed the format from linear stages to actual places. SM64 seems almost RPG-like. Sure there are oodles of platformers like that now, but it was a complete overhaul of the series.
One thing that I agree with is that it was "baby steps" so to speak. 3D graphics, explorable realms, and full isometrics were all very new concepts at the time. Super Mario Sunshine expanded it heavily. Galaxy actually returned the series to its roots by removing the adventure elements and just having the action stages.
