Mega Man 8 is pretty good, but I would just get the whole series on the Mega Man Anniversary Collection. It would probably be cheaper that way. Also, I wish I could go back in a time machine and buy Suikoden II when it first came out. I'm still upset that my ex-step family stole my Suikoden I, but I can always download that off the PSN now when I get a PS3.

Your not the only one brooks. I didnt buy Suikoden 2 either when it first came out and ended up paying 80 dollars for it a few years ago. Also I think Megaman AC only came out on PS2, Gamecube and Xbox but I totally agree with you there I think thats one of the best collection games out there.

The Spyro the Dragon series was still good back in the PS1 days. It's sorta like Super Mario 64 but bigger and much more varied.

As several others have said, Suikoden Suikoden Suikoden. It's my favorite series in gaming, Suikoden II is in my top 3 games of all time, it may be expensive but it's worth every penny.

Beware though, unlike many JRPG series they have a continuity and playing them in a particular order is very beneficial to the series. That order isn't necessarily 1-5 though since chronologically they actually go 4-5-1-2-3. Sad thing about this though is, 4 is the worst (still decent though) and 1 has aged the worst (still good though) so no matter where you start you may have to put up with something less than exceptional to get to the true masterpieces of the series that are II and III.

Still I can't recommend them enough to anyone who has any appreciation for traditional JRPG gaming.

I'm still not so sure the Suikoden series is for me. To me, the gameplay and visual style seemed very generic, and the story came off as "yet another super-serious war story I can't relate to," populated by 100+ underdeveloped characters I'll probably never have a reason to care about. I'll probably still get Suikoden II someday, but I'll stay away from the rest of the series unless I like that.

Many people will tell you Parasite Eve and PE2 are great but they really aren't. They are barely passable. The gameplay and controls (think Resident Evil controls/camera but far worse) are busted beyond imagination, which sucks because the story, sound, and graphics were pretty good (at least by 1998 standards). Try them out if you can get them extremely cheap but they aren't worth breaking the bank for.

Parasite Eve seems like a game I'd really enjoy. Resident Evil crossed with an RPG with a good, dark story sounds good to me, and camera or controls rarely are a problem for me.

I'm also interested in Parasite Eve.

The gameplay looks skin deep but especially in 2, 3 and 5 is very diverse and imaginative, much more so than most traditional JRPG's. As for the art style I guess that's just preference but I love them outside 4 which came off too brown and 'earth tone' for me.

The stories are much more deep and complex than you usual 'Megalomaniac Saturday morning cartoon villain who wants to take over/destroy the world purely because the game needs him to in order to have a plot' but that's precisely why I love them, especially II. They are based in a political struggle but you needn't worry about it being as such for the sake of some underlying or overt political agenda of the writers. It simply exists as a crux for the story to still have an epic, all encompassing story without having to revert to the aforementioned megalomania stereotype.

As for the large cast yes, some of the recruits will be underdeveloped but they're not essential to the story and largely even optional recruits that exist purely to give your castle a populated feel and some variety for party formation for players that like to experiment. The ~40 or so characters that are actually relevant to the plot however are just as if not better written than 95% of JRPG's out there and the series has by far some of the best villains I've ever seen in a game. So don't let the negative rumors or the large numbers fool you, Suikoden is far from a case of quantity>quality.

@oldgamesonly - Castlevania: Symphony of the Night. Awesome game! One of my top favorites.

I also want to experience the Alundra games. They seem interesting.

There are a lot of extra characters in Suikoden, but they all do different things in the castle. For example, one guy will play a gambling game with you. Also, just because of all the extra characters, there is still a main group of characters that are well developed and fleshed out. I won't spoil anything, but there is a death sequence in there that was one of the saddest moments I've ever experienced in a video game. I cared more about the characters in this game than I did with the characters in FF7.

Not to sound off-topic, but is Suikoden pronounced [see - coo - dehn] or [sue - ee - coh - den]?

The latter essentially.

Same, though frankly I've found FFVII to be one of the weaker FF games in terms of character design as Cid, Red and Barret where the only ones I particularly liked.

Anyways like Brooks said while many of those recruits are optional and have little character development few are just plain pointless as those 108+ recruits include people you get to operate services in your base including ~5 shop owners, trainers, people who run minigames etc and honestly, how many JRPG's give personality to those characters? Suikoden is no different in that sense except that you're able to bring them all together in one convenient location.

Thanks, EarthViper. I was just curious, 'cause I would've thought that it had a Japanese pronounciation, I mean with a title like Suikoden.
