I was looking at an issue of Nintendo Power, saying NSMBWii is the first Mario consle platformer in 18 years. However, Yoshi's Island came out 14 years ago. Would you count that game as part of the Super Mario canon?
It's story canon, but frequently not called a "Mario" platformer. Basically, SeniorDingDong has it right: It's a YOSHI platformer! That makes the basic gameplay VERY different from a Mario platformer, hence the distinction.

For me a main series Mario game is a platform game, staring Mario, on a console.
I agree with you.
Now the question is, is Super Mario Bros 2 USA (not Lost Levels) canon to main series? I would say yes since it has Mario and no since it's Doki Doki Panic the real game.

Well, in my most humble of opinions, on this fine Christmas Day - I'd say yes.
I would agree with Trin. It's not exactly difficult to make a game canon when the story turns out to be a dream anyway, now is it? The canon comes more from the classic Mario enemies that have stuck around since that title.

i don't remember ( may be wrong, though) bob-ombs in Yoshi's Island. and they were in Super Mario World... which considering Yoshi's Island was Super Mario World 2... i'm gonna take a wild guess and say it was NOT their first appearance.
and no, i don't think Yoshi's Island should count as a Mario series game. it's a Yoshi series game.
Maybe if it was the only "Yoshi" game, I would consider it, but since there really are "Mario games" and "Yoshi games", this one definitely falls under "Yoshi no geimu"
