I think by now it goes without saying LL is the hardest, but the next hardest would be Super Mario Land I suppose. I've played all of the games so much they're all fairly easy. Easiest by far is SMW, but I find it to be my favorite game in the series. Does that make me a wimp?
If it does than I am a wimp too.

Easiest is without a doubt Super Mario Land. As for hardest (dicounting SMB2J), that's hard (heh, pun only semi-intended); a few of the games have some pretty rough spots (SMB3, SMW, etc), but are not necessarily that hard overall.
I loved Lost Levels...in Super Mario Bros Deluxe! Ah, you gotta love infinite lives. I don't know what is the easiest. Each one has something about it that makes it difficult to complete. Newer games obviously are easier because of the infinite lives, but if that was taken away, they would be quite hard indeed. Imagine playing NSMBW with a few lives and two continues.
Easiest: New Super Mario Brothers Wii and DS. Hardest: SMB2 without using the warps and playing the entire game as Toad.
I always play as Toad. He's the best out of all of them. I actually find him to be easier, but that is because I play as him all of the time. I think that I did actually beat the game all the way through a couple of times, and that was on my friend's NES (had to go through it all in one play). But I guess that is because I got lucky with the darned slot machines.
I'll have to agree with Super Mario Land for easiest. I beat it less than a day after I first got it. Though Super Mario World was the toughest for me, it was only because it was the first video game I ever really played.
Then again, I remember having quite a bit of trouble with Super Mario Land 2 as a kid (resorting to Easy Mode often). Played it again a couple years ago for the first time in many years, beat the normal difficulty no problem.

Yeah, Toad is boss. When you lift something and hold onto the button, Toad will run at a super speed (and so picking up stuff faster is not the only thing he's good for).

Toad is a pretty strong character. His jumps are heavier than Mario's and he is pretty good at speed. I think Luigi is the hardest charcter to play as with his strange, floaty jump. He's not very handy when it comes to the boss fights.
I always liked playing as Toad because his physics felt more similar to Mario's in the past Mario games. Mario's jump feels a little odd to me in SMB2.
