Challenge: Why is Metroid Prime deserving of being #1 or #2 of the Metroid series?
I want to challenge those that have really enjoyed the game to reflect back on it, and be very detailed about how this game provides an exceptional experience. If you feel that this game is the best of several categories, be detailed about why you see it as the best for each. Also, if you felt some of the game is open to interpretation, those interpretations are definitely welcome.

It's like, I just love a cowboy
You know
I'm just like, I just, I know, it's bad
But I'm just like
Can I just like, hang off the back of your horse
And can you go a little faster?!
The only Metroid game I have played and completed is Metroid Prime 3. I was impressed with the scanning system that allows you to scan thousands of different objects to learn background, or, most importantly, get hints as to what you need to do to get to the next room. The camera never gave me any problems as I switched from first-person to morph ball. Combat can be quite intense at times, while other encounters can be very entertaining. The puzzles are what shine the most for me in this game. All of the morph ball labyrinths are fun to navigate, and I had a lot of fun using the X-ray vision on the Pirate Homeworld.
I can't speak much about the story, since I haven't played Prime 1 or 2, but the story really isn't the strong point IMO. The game gives you enough information to know that the Space Pirates and the Metroids are a pretty sinister duo.
If I had to compare Metroid to anything else, I would say it was Zelda in Outer Space.
Prime 1 is the best Metroid in my opinion. Prime 1 was the first time Metroid went to 3d, and the transition was perfect. The best thing about the game were the enviroments, since every room and corridor in the game is different, so there was no copy/pasted corridors or rooms. The soundtrack was also superb, and unlike most fps games where you shoot a few different types of enemies through the game, Metroid Prime had at least 60 different types of enemies. The story was better than in Prime 2 where the log texts were pretty badly written, and much better than in Prime 3, which felt really cliched and predictable story-wise.
If I could pick from all four of them I'd go with 3 as the controls were best and it was the most enjoyable but assuming you mean the original prime and super I'll say the the first prime game, it felt as vast as a Zelda game, gave a great challenge, with massive boss battles and exploration. Also it gave great back ground into what was going on before and during your time on the planet, making it one of the best 1st person shooters I've played. So it gets top over super Metroid, which I still have to play.

It deserves #1 or #2 spot because it's crisp and clear available in progressive mode created awesome atmosphere and story character experience.
It had to be a Metroid game, and first three-dee so, it kept with "tradition" and really bringing about history and info about Samus Aran, Chozo Lore, Space Pirates and so forth.
The colours and sounds really helped. You could just look around, experience these wild places, with or without awesome visors, letting you nicely get lost in your own thoughts and ideas about what happened where you are on the planet. And being able to just generally roll around and blast things were totally fun and awesome.
The GameCube controller (which I love) was also a factor when playing. The sliding clicking shoulder buttons and fun easy unique buttons helped in experiencing the suit(s).
So, it had to produce a world and actions that weren't like 2D Metroid III actions.
I loved the elevator scenes and cut-scenes where you get to see Samus in the environment and really feeling the mood, atmosphere.
It's a Metroid game in 3D. The best. Metroid Prime 3: Corruption was great controls, voice-over and so on, but Metroid Prime was what had to be, and anything else deviating or not following what is what is like newly discovered info, is prolonging the inevitable true sequel. With Samus fighting for more clearer answers. Or adventures that were on portable made to glorious Wii U.
Thanks for reading and hope that helps.

I find it difficult to judge what the best Metroid is, although I played Metroid and Super Metroid through and through during the first half of the 90s, I can't deny that I'm also extremely fond of Metroid Prime 1 and 2. I remember landing on Talon IV for the first time, with that incredible BGM being played; that was one of the most memorable moments in my 21-year experience as a gamer... And it cannot be denied; these Prime titles are extremely well-designed and were made with complete devotion and love for the original series. The one thing I missed in the Prime-series was the Speed Booster though...oh...and the original Sidehoppers by the way (although Prime 2's boss 'Quadraxis' seems to bear some kind of resemblance to these creatures)...oh...and Kraid (was actually designed, but ultimately scrapped during the development of Metroid Prime)...
What I liked particularly about Echoes was the concept of a parallel world in the vein of A Link To The Past...
As it happens, I have Metroid Prime shipping to me right now from Amazon. It could be anywhere from the 5th to the 20th though...
Anyways, I haven't gotten far in Super Metroid, but from what I've played, I doubt it will beat that game. I honestly can't get myself to like the original Metroid, so I bet it will beat that. I guess it's just one of those games that you have to play when it comes out. It's just too hard with all of the new tools we have in Metroid games, like the much needed map of course.
Nintendo - Where even first person shooters ooze creativity.
The one thing I missed in the Prime-series was the Speed Booster though...
An unused image what looks like a Shinesparking Samus. In an interview with Retro Studios, it was revealed that they were considering implementing the Speed Booster and Shinespark, but due to the difficulties implementing it, it was scrapped.
