@BruceCM I like linear games only if the gameplay is good (otherwise I'd rather watch a film) and I like open-world games only if they are fun to play (otherwise they are not worth my time).
Fair enough, @BlueOcean .... I obviously won't force myself in any game if it's terrible but I'm pretty sure I'll like FFXIII well enough
Oh no, I don't mean Final Fantasy XIII, I think it's great. I was thinking of other games but did not want to mention them, something like Uncharted as a linear game with mediocre gameplay and something like Breath of the Wild as an open-world game that has no depth at all.
EDIT: Good online games on Xbox One: Monster Hunter World, Rocket League, Halo 5, Crackdown 3, State of Decay 2, Sea of Thieves...
Hmm, never heard of Crackdown, @BlueOcean .... A problem I'm finding is a lot of games are just vaguely described as 'action-adventure', which doesn't really tell me much

Good thing most of them are on Game Pass so you can try them for free. One of the games I've played more online, Sea of Thieves (online only), can be the most rewarding or the most frustrating game ever depending on the other players. Crackdown 3 has a campaign and multiplayer mode.
Cool, @BlueOcean. ... How are games where you have to work with others, if you don't already have any friends playing? Guess that's my main concern, especially as I'd be both new to the specific games & to the whole online part

I try to play Sea of Thieves with friends because otherwise it can be really frustrating BUT some of my current friends were met in Sea of Thieves... I didn't have a single Xbox friend either until I got my console but it's easy to make friends. You just play, start a voice party chat (they are really easy to set up on Xbox One) and if you like playing with someone you just add them, if you don't like them you can block them. It depends on how do you feel when playing and talking with them. You can play without headset too but it's harder to do the teamwork. Also, people are usually friendlier on Xbox because they are used to playing in an advanced online community since last generation. Of course, there are lots of j*rks too.
That's when, not if, @BlueOcean ... Thanks! I just remembered the 2 Divinity Original Sin games are on xbox, aren't they?
Edit: If I pick up a cheap wired headset, there is somewhere to plug it in, right?

Actually, I strongly recommend you buying a wired headset whether if it's cheap or expensive, mine is wired too, because you just plug it into the controller (no batteries, no interference). You don't need one with external audio processing either because it's always worse than the Xbox One sound, especially now with Sonic for Headphones (7.1 support). Whatever brand you choose, just get a wired headset for Xbox One, it's better, lighter and cheaper.
Great, there's some for £10, @BlueOcean .... Should be fine for chat Not yet any idea how much I'll need it, can always upgrade later if it seems worthwhile

That's what I did because I wasn't sure that I'd use it enough. The one I bought this year is also great for listening to music. I was using the headset in the Xbox One Elite bundle with just one earphone until this year! LOL Even Wii Speak was a better option... Wait, was it? Don't get one with one earphone.
@BlueOcean I'm up for some online play. Not sure how to add friends on Xbox one but let me know your gamer tag and I’ll figure it out.
Haven’t got a headset at the moment, never played much online on Xbox one or 360 (apart from Black ops back in the day) and didn’t fancy getting abuse from teenagers! I’m thinking of getting one, even if it’s just a cheap chat headset with a mic and one earpiece for now (standard apple headphones are all funny if you don’t turn the mic off).
‘You swapped three different N64 games for Pokemon Stadium? Where’s your pride? Your dignity?!?
@BlueOcean Watch Dogs isn't a bad game at all, its problem is just that it takes itself way way waaaaaaaay too seriously. Aiden just needs to say "I am the Bat Man" as often as possible for it to feel sensible. 2, and apparently 3 took a VERY different turn to make it a more colorful, comic world. It's a refreshing difference giving it its own identity, though it makes me almost (almost) miss how it used to try to be so serious.
Oh, and the cars & magnetic cops. Can't forget that bit of fun. I once swam like 20 miles in the river to get away from the cops....and they were still after me on the other side of town.
