I'm surprised I haven't found a topic here about this game already, considering it's based off of such a cool retro game. Most of you have probably heard something about some X-COM shooter, but this game is not that game. I read a great article on the game in the recent Game Informer, and it sounds so great. It's a lot like Civilization, for those of you who have not played X-COM UFO Defense. In fact, the new game is being made by Firaxis Games, the creator of the glorious Civ franchise. The article was so good, I decided to go on Steam and buy the X-COM Complete Pack (only $15 USD for 5 games, and the first is worth more than that), and so far I've only played the original, UFO Defense, but it is so great. I've always liked DOS, not as much as the SNES obviously, but I'm surprised that such a great game could have been made on the system.
For those who haven't played it, the main screen is basically a view of the planet. You build bases, which you can research and build things at, order weapons, ammo, and vehicles, send fighters and transports out, and other things. X-COM is an organization started to defend the world from UFO attacks, and it is funded by various countries around the world, but if you don't defend them well, they will start to cut funds. When a UFO appears, you can start tracking it and send a fighter after it. Once it crashes is when things get really fun, though.
You send a transport after the UFO from here, and when you land, you basically have a squad of soldiers to use to hunt down all of the aliens, usually sectoids in the beginning. It's basically like Advanced Wars or Ghost Recon Shadow Wars if you've played those games. It's incredibly addicting, and there is a lot of micromanagement to make sure you don't run out of ammo, or soldiers for that matter. It can get really complex, especially if you utilize the destruction mechanic. It's more fun to experience though, so I'll end it here.
Anyways, what do you all think now that X-COM is getting a proper remake? I'm super excited. I just wish we knew more. The game is supposed to come out later this year. Discuss.

If they keep it strategy based I would love it. I have very fond memories of loading up my sky ranger with laser tanks and bringing the fight to enemy bases and would love to do this again.

That's the best part, it is strategy based! It's almost the same game, with HD graphics. You know longer have to manage ammo, which kind of saddens me, and they did away with time units for a standard movement cap, like in Civilization. Each unit has so many spaces it can move each turn. Basically the same thing, except much easier to manage, and it makes more sense in my opinion. Then there are new enemies, like the thin man, which is basically a "slender man" if you've heard of that myth.

I don't recall anything about chrysalids; But this is just the very first report on the game, and the article was still bursting with information. It said vehicles will play a much larger role, and now there will be these giant "robot" things, that can be modified for any scenario. They have a lot of disadvantages, such as the inability to level up and it costs a ton of money to develop one, but they are incredibly powerful. Just one example.

I do recall seeing some footage from Gamescom and was rather impressed. They only showed the combat though so I have no idea if it will be like UFO defense.
Sean Aaron ~ "The secret is out: I'm really an American cat-girl." Q: How many physicists does it take to change a light bulb? A: Two, one to hold the light bulb, the other to rotate the universe.

Again, if it interests you, I would go to a GameStop if you live in America and get the issue of GameInformer quickly, before the next comes out. I understand that a lot of people despise GameStop and a lot of people also think GameInformer is a poor magazine, but this article is exceptionally good. And it sounds nearly identical to UFO Defense.
If you don't live in the U.S., I guess your best bet is to look for scans. Also, I love your signature.
