Sacrificing something for something else(especially when it's less important).

Distracting the enemy/drawing attacks from the opponent to help teammates.

EDIT: Also, low chance moves that never seem to make contact.

Any variation of "kill yourself to heal a party member."
All of the 5 minute unskippable attack animations for summons in PS1 era Final Fantasy games.
Anything with a low success rate.
Charge skills that guarantee your next hit to be a critical, when criticals are less than 2x damage.

This is called tanking and it's a pretty damn big deal in any MMO.
