The levels in that game are simply Nintendo at their best; filled to the brim with imagination, whimsy and challenge. No wasted space, whilst being tightly designed AND capable of player experimentation.
Can't wait to see what Miyamoto does with the portly plumber on Wii U!
Braid and Super Meat boy kill most of the games on this list.
Super Meat Boy is nothing but death traps. Hardly an example of good level design.
Let's do some quoting!

Don't place a bunch of checkpoints in every level. Death in games should be a consequence, not simply a hindrance.
But without the risk & reward gameplay, what's the point of beating a game if you don't feel victorious? I used to love going through a game that challenged my skills, especially platformers and action games. Games like Mega Man, Mega Man X, Contra, Castlevania, etc. are the types of games you feel proud to beat, because the challenge makes it more enjoyable.
And that's the problem, death in games SHOULD be a consequence...
...That form of challenge is what's missing in today's games.
And what I played of VVVVVV was boring to me. VVVVVV has no momentum, it's just stop-and-go. The only strategy that game has is using the gravity gimmick to maneuver around obstacles, and even that was poorly implemented.
But it does 'go', therefore it does have momentum.
It's like, I just love a cowboy
You know
I'm just like, I just, I know, it's bad
But I'm just like
Can I just like, hang off the back of your horse
And can you go a little faster?!
Super Meat Boy does have some pretty great level design. And aren't most things in platformers death traps? Isn't that kind of the point?
I second DKCR though. Some of the stages in that game were brilliant, especially in the Factory stages. I really liked the one with the hands and fists as platforms. And obviously the Galaxy games and NSMBW are both ingeniously designed.
The best strategy in the game: go up stairs and pause balls.

No contest, this is hands down Rayman Origins. You don't have to be a platformer to realize how great it is and the way an expert player can just 'flow' through a level is perfection.

I agree with you on this, but I felt the more difficult levels had too much trial and error.
