Seriously. Whatever pinhead says red on black is good needs shot, and then the jackass that saod every letter should be stylised differently to ve as inconsistent as possible shouldnt be making UI. :/

@YummyHappyPills Yet the UI is one of the most highly praised aspects of the game, giving it a distinctive visual flair that makes even the simple act of pulling up the menu a joy.

Maybe they could use a color-blind mode, though.

@Ralizah Perhaps.

Doesnt mean if you make a UI and each letter is in different sizes, skewed, in boxes of various colours and a different font from the last doesnt mean its good.

It breaks up the words, and that makes them slower to read.

That is unintuitive design in the name of being flashy.

And the red on black is just cementing it as a game i cant play. I can only see the letters that are contrasted in white boxes. The rest? Apparently there are letters.

@YummyHappyPills I've never had a problem reading them. Like I said, maybe a different color scheme for color-blind folks is in order, but I think the style of the lettering is snazzy. For most of us, I imagine, it makes the menus that little bit more enjoyable to navigate. It's cool that the game's sense of style extends even to stuff like that.

@Ralizah I dunno. I think all games could use a colour blind mode. As pixel counts go up the number of pixels with colours I cant distinguish between increases, more so with HDR. Yet colour blind modes get left out.

As for that UI, unfortunately I believe in usability over style. Sadly that one leans too much on style to where, while cool and flashy...it is hard to read none the less.

@YummyHappyPills I think more games should have increased accessibility options in general.

The style is integral to the identity of the game, though. It'd be like changing the dialogue in a Tarantino movie to be more concise-- it'd be missing the point of the entire production.

Not that Persona is pure style over substance, but I'd say the style is at least equally important.

@Ralizah My stance is that UI is your primary interface with the player - How you convey information to them, and how they interface with your software.

If at any point that becomes difficult for visual reasons, it needs redesigning, or updating.

Like the tiny text in XCX was not a good idea. The info was all there, just hard as hell to read.

Persona 5, the info is all there, just broken up in the name of style.

This shows the problem full hand. Unclear spacing, words blend together and the absolute clusterfu** of black and white shapes on the right side distracts from the menu, in the same colours formed of abstract shapes, in the middle.

And the red. That damn red.

I hope I don't need to explain that red on black is an eyesore. As someone who is colour blind it acts like a filter - As I cant distinguish the shapes of the letter due to their inconsistent formatting, the visual explosion going on to the right with the same colours, combined with the red in the middle, a colour my eyes already have a nightmare of a time focusing around, causes the entire image to effectively melt into a blur.

To be honest Persona is style over substance. At least when it comes to gameplay. After all, if you remove all the bells and whistles, you're left with a visual novel with turn based RPG battles sprinkled about.

And that's why people like these games I think.

Honestly, I loved Persona 5 so hard, but I don't understand the fascination with the UI lol. Like in battle yes everything is stylish and works incredibly well, giving a newfound flow to the battle. However outside of battle I thought it was kinda... cluttered? Like for example the menu, it took iirc four screens just to get to the conversation stats.

Dialogue choices also got really cluttered, it covers half the screen with the main characters face and the choices don't pop out much. Honestly I laughed the first time I saw this, it just looks so derpy, especially when the mc looks so desperate making a choice for something like button mash Morgana.

There is a style to the game, but I think it only really works in its favor in battle and dungeons. Outside in the real world, it's at best alright and at worst distracting.

People might think I'm childish for my picture, and I am.

@YummyHappyPills To be fair, it looks fine to me. I personally don't have any problem distinguishing the words and shapes or reading the menu.

@Octane You're not colour blind!

I admit Sonic Forces is just as bad. What meanie puts red...on a lighter shade of red?

@Meowpheel Persona 5 featured changes that made it more engaging as a gameplay experience than P3/P4, such as the large, puzzle-filled dungeons, demon negotiation, etc.

It's definitely VERY story and dialogue focused, though, which is why I still prefer SMT overall.

I have to say, I appreciate some of the little changes done to Shadow of the Colossus. The stamina meter doesn't grow weirdly out of proportion anymore, but instead become a long bar with the classic circle at the end, but you don't notice it until you find your lizard and you start to wonder what that weird little nub on the circle is doing.

Octane

Starburst

@Octane I see the lizards everywhere but they don't seem to do anything when I pick them up or whatever he does, are there special ones or something?

@Nekoo77 Yeah, some have blue-ish white tails. If you kill them they drop their tails, and you can pick those up to increase your stamina. There's always one near a save shrine. But there are several dozen of them spread across the map. Same applies to fruit, shoot them down, and pick them up! They increase your health.

@YummyHappyPills Just so we're clear, there's not actually a lot of red in that picture you posted...like, nowhere where it could impede the readability of the text - just part of the hand (right side, away from the menu text) and the backround. There are blackborders around all the white text. My brother is Red/Green/Yellow/Blue color blind, and we've talked at length as to what colors look like to him. If your point is that it's very busy to look at, I can agree, but I'm not entirely sure how a colorblind mode could help you here.
