Topic: The Platforming Thread (Please no argue)

I am a HUGE fan of platformer games, and they are probably one of my favorite game genres alongside fighting and rhythm games.

I have played modern platformer games, but I find myself liking older platformers more. I’m specifically a fan of Rare’s platformers from the N64 era, cuz I find that they exude a lot of charm and have a lot of interesting twists with its gameplay sometimes. The 3D platformers I like the most are the Banjo-Kazooie games and Conker’s Bad Fur Day, though they can be pretty hard to play nowadays with its controls sometimes and have gameplay design that could be considered outdated by some. I also love the games a lot because of the times I played them, especially Conker; I already discussed it in another thread on NL, but the game is so special to me for many other reasons I probably shouldn’t state here to avoid having my response go off topic. Although I have played a majority of Rare’s platformer, I have not yet played Donkey Kong 64.

Although I like 3D platformers more, I have played a few 2D platformers that I find to be on the same levels of great like the 3D platformers I’ve played, like the Donkey Kong Country games. It was such a blast playing through the SNES games on Switch for the first time years ago. However, I haven’t had positive experiences with all the platformers I have played, though me having a negative experience with platformers is a very rare occurrence. There was this isometric 2D platformer called Snake Rattle n Roll that I tried out last year and it was pretty bad in my opinion. The final boss was what made the game really awful I feel.

Anti-Matter

@Yousef-
I put Mario Sunshine as the worst 3D Mario games after I tried from Switch version.
Terrible Fludd control, I thought weapon aiming from Ratchet & Clank games are way much better than Mario Sunshine.
I sold the game (Switch version) after I felt completely disengaged with the game.

I see thanks for answering.

Well... on Switch I currently have in non-overlapping game categotization:

  • 68 2D platformers
  • 31 3D platformers
  • 33 puzzle platformers
  • 26 action platformers
  • 29 metroidvanias that almost all have a lot of platforming.

Also, some of my favorite rogue-lites, rpgs, and adventure games have platforming. Even a couple of my favorite visual novels have platforming. I also really like the fact that you can jump across small gaps in Animal Crossing.

So, I do like platformers.

Only two I've played this year have been Mario VS Donkey Kong & Princess Peach Showtime (well, depending on the level), but I'm definitely looking forward to the new Astro Bot too, which looks like it'll be fantastic.

Currently Playing:
Switch - Blade Strangers
PS4 - Kingdom Hearts III, Tetris Effect (VR)

I'd say platformers are one of the genres that come out on top with all of the systems I've owned. From the likes of Chuckie Egg on early systems, Bruce Lee, Turrican & Rainbow Islands on C64 & Amiga right up to the likes of The Messenger and N-Sane Trilogy on modern systems. I've got loads in the backlog too.

I definitely prefer a 2D platformer over a 3D one these days, but having said that Super Mario Galaxy is one of my all-time favourite games. Oddly I haven't really clicked with a lot of well received 3D platformers - stuff like Mario 64, Banjo, Conker, A Hat in Time & Psychonauts did nothing for me.

I don't like mario games that much, because the platforming challenges, for me anyway, jump from boringly easy to unfathomably hard. Played New Super Mario Bros 2 and Odyssey. Maybe I'm misremembering though.
But I love the shovel knight series as well as Hollow. Knight. The common denominator there looks to be that the main character is less floaty and heavier, so maybe I'll try a DK game.

I've really been enjoying Bakeru so far (been playing it on Steam).

I've taken a lot of screenshots, but I figured I wouldn't clog up this thread & just link to the screenshot thread:

Really impressed with how distinct each level feels so far. Honestly might have had a shot at being the best platformer of the year if Astro Bot didn't release this year.

Currently Playing:
Switch - Blade Strangers
PS4 - Kingdom Hearts III, Tetris Effect (VR)

@RR529 There have actually been a lot of great platformers this year so it would be tough competition. But yeah, if Best Platformer was a game awards category Astro Bot would almost certainly win.

I wish Game Awards did have platformer as a category — why do rpgs and fighting games and action games and racing games get categories, but not platformers? 🤔
