From what I've seen/heard, it doesn't seem as good as SSB, so whatevs. Anyways, a Nintendo Crossover makes sense because there are so many iconic icons Who does Sony have that EVERYBODY knows? MAYBE Sackboy and Nathan Drake. Jak/Dexter, Sly, Ratchet & Clank and Crash seem like the best bets, but still none of them have the popularity of the majority of franchises that fight in SSB. The existence of this game confuses me. Is it supposed to appeal to SSB fans by not being SSB? Is it trying to make a battle of the (not as) iconic franchises? The creation of SSB makes more sense than this, but again, whatever. I won't be buying it.
How many Icons are there in Marvel vs. Capcom that everybody knows? It's called fanservice, and not everyone is a fan of something uber popular.
This game is on a Sony system and has characters from Sony games. It should appeal to people who like Sony games, who, coincidentally, also may have a Sony system. Its existence can't be that confusing.
People who like Street Fighter also play King of Fighters, Skullgirls, Guilty Gear, Samurai Shodown, or whatever other game comes along with similarities to the Street Fighter formula. I don't see why a Smash-like game shouldn't appeal to fans of Smash, too. The Nintendo roster is great, but if you replaced it with any other characters, it would still be the same game play, so I would still enjoy the game. I'm interested to see what another studio might do with Smash's foundation. Hopefully this does a better job than TMNT Smash Up .
More than Sony has. I just wish that they had went another route than something that looks VERY VERY SIMILAR to SSB. Someone brought up a TMNT brawler? That game wasn't trying to rival Brawl, but to emulate it's success. It's not the case with this. So why make a near identical game? EDIT: posted this before I saw your comment, Adam.
To go with this they copied... Remote Play Streetpass Wii Achievements The DreamEye It is rumoured that Orbis is going to mash both Kinect and Wii u (I wish I was kidding)
But how do you know the intentions of each game studio? This could be trying to "emulate its succes," and the other game could have been intended to rival it. I'm sure both are just trying to make a better game, however you want to spin it. It is pointless to consider it a rival of a game that is several years old. People still buy it, but it's not lighting up the sales charts or the tournament scene (the fact that they're trying to get it at EVO is pretty cool, if successful; I wish Nintendo didn't ignore tournament play). There is nothing worth rivaling at the moment, and they have no idea what Smash 4 will be like, so they can't anticipate it as rival. This could potentially be more like Brawl than Smash 4, if Sakurai is serious about shaking things up.
Edit re: Edit: Understood. I snuck that one in and just kind of threw myself in the middle of your conversation.
I'm just saying that they could have at least made it a different kind of fighter. Sony makes great games, so why make one so similar to a best-selling and long-running franchise? They definitely are in it to win it. But it's not necessary. They could have just made it with less similarities or maybe came up with their own style of the genre. That would be amazing. But instead they make it similar to Smash Bros., as to compete with it. Both games are in the works, after all. Sony feeding of SSB's success with this seems cheap and indignified. Maybe that's what has me upset.
I'm just saying that they could have at least made it a different kind of fighter.
Many have tried and failed to take the Smash Bros formula in a different direction, unfortunately. Anybody remember even Guilty Gear tried to do it? And Blayzbloo? The only other successful party fighter I've seen was Power Stone, which was in many ways the inspiration for Super Smash Bros., and many people still seem to think Smash Bros. is the better game (granted I'm not one of them. Gimme Power Stone any day).
I don't see how it's different from TMNT Smash Up also taking the same general formula and running with it. Both could be seen as copycats if you are wont to treat games as either original or not original. It's also says nothing about the millions more Street Fighter copies out there. If anything, Sony's being original in choosing their source material. What is the point in being upset about it?
If you go to one restaurant and eat a delicious burrito, then go to another one and eat a delicious burrito that tastes a bit different, are you going to complain that, though both are delicious and have a number of subtle differences, they are both essentially burritos and the other should have been some brand new kind of food? No, because all burritos are delicious, which is what matters, and you shouldn't talk with your mouth full.
I think it's unfair to expect every new fighting game to be unlike any before it. Skullgirls recently came out and is very much like so many other fighters, and yet it has wonderful (though more than a little embarrassing) art work and music and a really great little roster of characters. Characters are a big part of what makes fighters fun, often moreso than the system. Watching that trailer is like if you saw a new Street Fighter with only Ryu and Ken shown. You won't know if you'll love the game until you see the rest of the characters, which may be totally unlike anything in any Smash game.
I'm just saying it kills what makes the series' unique. If one burrito had this really good filling that no one else had, and that was what made the burrito so memorable, then when other burritos starts copying it, the uniqueness is diminished. The burrito is no longer the unique one, and now every burrito will taste the same.
Except one of those burritos tastes iconic to practically everyone in the world, and the other has a few of the same ingredients but just doesn't have that same taste.
I know some people look at, say, Crash Bandicoot as a classic, iconic figure. But don't you tell me for a second that the cast will ever rival Smash Bros. It's literally just not possible. That said, I feel hesitant to say this is just a flat out copy. They are doing different things, and I'm a firm believer that just because on person did something, doesn't mean no one can ever do it again. But I'm not sure all the changes are for the best.
The best strategy in the game: go up stairs and pause balls.
TMNT and others already make it not "unique" if this does. Smash 4 is going to be a new, unique experience, anyway. If good ideas were off limits to other developers, we wouldn't have several of Nintendo's own series, and the 360 would have ten games.
@Shadx Is Smash Bros. the minimum bar now that every game has to meet or exceed? I can think of hundreds of other games with a lesser cast, because there is no better roster for a Nintendo fan. But I'm sure people who prefer Playstation to Nintendo will like this cast better, and it just so happens that the game is on a Playstation, so I don't see the problem. The view of the average NL user isn't exactly going to be unbiased here.
Jack tretton: well you know that game where you okay as the plumber, that elfboy, the mouse, and the pink blobs and they fight. That game made a lot of money and I want to emulate that and also get lots of money.
Sony guy 1: yes it will be great to play az all my favorite Sony characters that I loved when I was a lad. You know like general radex and fat princess.
Jack tretton: yes but make it cartoony so these guys wont savagely kill each other. Oh and try to get those famous square characters of old like lightning and tidus.
WAT!

It already looks ten-times better then Brawl. You can always count on Sony to make a better game.
