Prefer NGP. I already use a smart phone, I don't need a tablet. I suspect this is not a smart move for Sony. I'm also waiting to see how they handle this PSN problem before I put my money into any more of their machines with online services.
i really like the ds-looking 2-screen one...but yeah--as bboy said, virtual buttons/sticks are universally terrible. Even though I'm confident Sony will do an infinitely better job than trash the disjointed 3rd party devs have done so far for iPhone, there are several genres that just wouldn't play whatsoever barring some type of life-changing leap involving tactile simulation in touch-screen controller emulation. It'd work for RPGs, but that's pretty much it.
Now if it has bluetooth and connects to a PS3 controller I will 240% reverse my statement.

It's obviously not actually a gaming system, it's just that it can play games - just as with the iPad. I actually think the S2 being fold-able is quite ingenious as it makes for a much smaller Pad (laptop). If I do invest in one of these, though it's highly unlikely, I'll most likely get the S2 for its ease of portability.

@slap - well yeah it's not a gaming system...but it plays PS1 games...and it's Sony...and chances are it has bluetooth capability...I can't see the ability to connect w/ a PS3 controller being in any way unreasonable...or even expensive/time-consuming.
Here's to hoping, eh? Way more appealing than iPad to me--Android 3.0 ftw. And yeah--foldable one for sure due to portability. And screen protection

Anyone feel like Sony is flooding the market a bit lately with hand held devices? They have that PS phone, NGP soon and now these two things. That's quite a few devices in such a short span of time. I don't think this will end up working very well for them but we'll see...
I'm not really into tablets but that clamshell one looks really neat. I would probably get it if I wasn't already dead set on getting the NGP. I am looking forward to seeing more on these Sony Tablets. It is always exciting to see new tech on the market.

If they keep throwing ideas out there, sooner or later one of them has to take off, right?
...ooooor you oversaturate your customers by providing them with too many options, so that even if exorbitant numbers of people turn out to buy them, the fact that they're each buying different things makes it possible for none of the products to turn a profit individually.
If you release them in increments (as Apple is notorious--but understandable--for doing) you corral all of your customers into a single file and profit from them each time. Offering multiple options doesn't necessarily win over new customers...it may well just split the ones you have into groups too small to make money off of.
We'll see how it goes. Right now it's getting the exact same shrug from me that every portable Playstation product has gotten, so at least they're consistent.

I sort of agree. The Sony S1 and S2 aren't actually PlayStation devices so much as they are would-be competition for Apple's iPad, Samsung Tab and the Motorola XOOM. However, I can easilly see the Sony S1 and S2 catching on like wildfire because if Sony markets it properly and aims it at the PlayStation audience it might just actually be a success.
I just don't really care for tablets as I prefer the traditional handheld like the 3DS and the NGP.

As opposed to the 30 different models of Nokia, HTC and Blackberry phones that are available in and given store? Or the fact that, at any one time, there's 20 different Asus laptops, 15 different Acer laptops, 57 different HP laptops, and approximately 391 different Dell laptops to choose from?
And let's not forget the 100 different TV models each major vendor offers.
It's obviously a model that works. Most of those companies I mentioned above are quite profitable.

Yeah, it's one of those "it just happens to also play games" deals. Thing is, though - the iPad is a really good gaming device (especially for certain genres - if you're like me and you like strategy and board games, the iPad is THE console of choice right now), and that's Apple. Apple doesn't care much for games.
Sony cares for games.
And also, the S2 is sexier than the iPad. Sony is the only vendor that genuinely competes with Apple for that fashionable X-factor.

It's a model that works far better for certain products than it does for others. You listed phones, computers, and televisions, all things that nearly every consumer in industrialized nations own, and often they own more than one. Those markets can sustain saturation because the demand is greater than 1:1.
Video game systems are not nearly as ubiquitous. The market is smaller, and while many gamers own more than one system it's by no means every gamer (narrowing the field of customers further), and it's almost never more than one system from the same manufacturer.
Oversaturation is a very real danger in the video game industry, as a quick trip down the timeline of gaming history will demonstrate time and time again.
And yeah, I know, this is a tablet that also happens to play games. Fine. If they didn't want it to be thought of as a video game system in discussions like this, they probably shouldn't have given it the name PlayStation. Unlike Nintendo, Sony can market this thing in any way they please, and by affixing that name they've made it perfectly clear what market they're going after.

It hasn't been given the name "PlayStation." It's the Sony Tablet S1, or Sony Tablet S2.
The person I addressed listed a Phone, two Tablets, and one gaming console and asked if that was an oversaturation. Sony produces fewer different phones, fewer different tablets (and notebooks), and just as many handheld consoles as the competition.
That Sony then attaches the PlayStation brand to all these devices doesn't mean that they're all PlayStations. It just means that Sony's using PlayStation as a "hey these devices are pretty damned good at games too," kinda deal.
It's also Sony's way of encoraging people to stick to Sony. If you can have PlayStation in common on your phone, tablet and games consoles, why would you want to look to another vendor (or so the marketing speak goes)? Also not unusual in the modern market - that's why Apple sticks 'i' in front over every product.
If I were to get any of those, I'd go for S2. It's like a sleeker looking DSi. Wonder if this will conflict with Xperia Play and NGP. Doubt it will land MASSIVE DAMAGE, but still... :3
If you release them in increments (as Apple is notorious--but understandable--for doing) you corral all of your customers into a single file and profit from them each time.
Apple customers corralled into a line like sheep waiting for new iterations of the same product? Wut?
Love you Apple-device users.
