I remembered a saying earlier that fits this whole PSN scenerio all too well.
"You get what you paid for"
Since PSN is free, and you generally pay nothing, you get nothing.

@BedCommando: I didn't pay for someone to possibly steal my identity.

I'm so glad I downloaded Parasite Eve before this happened.

My connection to the PSN is through Media Go and my PSP. I made an account and downloaded a few demo games, but I can't remember whether I submitted my bank details.

Do you register your bank details on making a PSN account or do you have to put them in for the first time when you make an online purchase? I never got round to buying anything on Media Go.

At the very least, my password is compromised.

To the ones who are turning this into a good old laugh do realize what they took from a lot of people?

I just changed banks do to the fact I hated my old bank, so I guess I am kind of lucky that I did that at the right time and my old card is deactivated since I am not using that bank anymore. That's one silver lining, I guess. This whole situation just sucks, though.

The whole "You get what you paid for." is kinda invalid.

PSN is free (most people keep it that way) while an optional (and much beneficial) PSN+ is $50.

There is also speculation that Sony started this in order to prevent people from getting free games off PSN since there is some exploit apparently. It doesn't make sense to me, but I expect a few changes while the servers are offline.
Why are there no back-up servers?

There would be back up servers. But restoring a global (and I do mean global) data network takes quite a long time, especially if you're patching it as you go.

This isn't just a matter of click and drag icons

It's also worth noting that the chances that a hacker (or even group of hackers) was able to access, download and store 75 million accounts worth of customer data in such a short time is miniscule to none, and if they were able to do that, tracking them down should be pretty freaking easy.

You would think that they would be able to restore usage to certain areas and limited users. They should be able to quickly restore at least partial service to their PS+ customers. It can't take many servers to service about 100 people, can it?

Anyway, a little more news: http://www.bit-tech.net/news/gaming/2011/04/27/psn-user-detai...

Also, expect them to get away with it. It is not as easy as you think it is to find an experienced hacker group. It could have been done a few different ways; none of them were likely difficult. You just need to know how their system works. I am sure Sony will figure out how it was done, but they probably won't share with us.

It was 100% Anonymous who did this, I saw a 4chan thread about this like in March.

They would deny it to keep it off them. They are essentially criminals and we all know criminals lie. I'm partially worried for my account but whatevs. I do have trust in Sony. Because with THEIR consumers, "They don't play."

I heard a rumor that Sony is going to shut down PSN for good. But then again people on GameFaqs aren't the smartest group of people.

and we all know that huge corporations NEVER lie, right? as terra said: it's not anonymous's style to steal consumer info.

Peachy. So my card info may have been stolen and may be used. Not only that but my stupid PS3 froze yesterday and I was forced to set it back to factory setting which means I need to get my ID back. So irritating. The one time in months that I even turn the thing on and it gives me nothing but crap. No wonder I never use it.

I suggest everyone just rings up their bank and makes sure no suspicious transactions have taken place and If they are a one password person. Change the other ones.

This is getting nasty and Sony risk a massive hit to their reputation if this continues much longer.

Wait a minute......I never used my card on my PS3 since I never actually bought anything and the card on record on my PSP was canceled 2 months ago! I guess that means I'm basically safe. Still hope they get the network back up soon though. That free mystery game is only available until March 3rd and I really like free things...

Commence troll-ish comment:

This is why I'm not so sure a profile-based online system is something I want from a Nintendo console. For all its drawbacks, I love the fact that all Nintendo has on me is essentially my Wii serial code, so long as I just pick up points cards at the store. Everything is individual transactions, no personal profile whatsoever.

Well except for my Club Nintendo account... but I don't mind if hackers read my insightful comments on surveys.

If they had a PS3 and used PSN I'm sure these people wouldn't be as insensitive.
