I put about 10 hours into brutal legends and quit. Just want for me.
You guys will see me online and here a lot less from now on. My wife finally finished up the majority of all the time consuming parts of her specialist degree. Pretty much she won't be studying all the time anymore so i won't be able to play as much.

I went through that Wikipedia page you linked me, and I compiled a wishlist totalling 19 games based on its info. I'm sure its missing stuff, so I'll do some more digging later. Thanks for your help.
Slow-going (and easily distracted) as I've been, I've just now finally reached Chapter 11 in FFXIII. Anything you may have heard about how the game opens up at that point could not have prepared you for the extent to which it really does. All of a sudden, I'm getting some great FFXII vibes with the wide-open spaces and hunt missions. It's just a real shame there has to be so much linearity leading up to that point, turning off so many people completely. I liked those parts okay, I guess, but THIS is definitely the good stuff.
My Backloggery Updated sporadically. Got my important online ID's on there, anyway. :P
I wish someone would get to chapter 11 and just say, Wow, this stinks. For me. I'd feel a lot better having quit at some really tough boss either at the beginning of chapter 11 or right before.

The difficulty goes way off balance after chapter 11, and the story grinds to a halt and suddenly you're stuck wandering around while trying to avoid the numerous enemies that can kill you in one hit. Trust me, you stopped at the right time.
Now that's what I wanted to read. Really weird that they change up the whole formula halfway through the game. I think if I thought of the game as ending after Chapter 10, I might kind of like it. It's pretty much on auto-pilot that whole time, but it's pretty and the battle music is insanely catchy.
@mickeymac im having tons of fun with transformers thanks. really not playing much else at the moment but if anyone wants to play U2 or something just let me know, and for anyone who wants a solid 3rd person shooter and has worn U2 to its bones, please pick up transformers
@Mickeymac: Not a fan of your average JRPG, are you? That's where all the FUN is! I think it's really cool that they put all these unbeatable enemies around, because it makes it seem like the planet has a really believable ecosystem. If you wander into the woods in real life, you may run into a bunny, deer, fox, or bear, right? Same thing here, but on a much more fantastic scale.
I do agree it's STRANGE throwing such a massive change of pace into the game, but it's a welcome change for me.

If it was your average RPG, it would've okay, but the gameplay just wasn't designed for the open, explorative gameplay that it tried to pull off. The battles were long, arduous, and just plain annoying. The Battle system was alright when most of the enemies were quick and easy, asside from the occasional boss, but from Chapter 11 it just seemed like every enemy was a boss. It grew very tiring very quickly. There was honestly no reason for them to waste peoples' time like that. The fact that the story grinded to a hault and didn't really resume until towards the end was also disappointing, since it was the best part about the entire game. Its like they gave us some sweet dark chocolate to feast on, then when we were halfway through with it, they switched it with a brick while we weren't looking. It really came as a dreadful surprise, and I really didn't want to go on. It doesn't matter how cool Gran Pulse was, if its not fun, its not fun, and IMO, it was REALLY not fun.
Not sure, Stuff. I think I was in Chapter 11, in some underground training facility sort of thing? If I remember right, at the end of Chapter 10 you get the ability to change party members at will (and about damn time), then there's a huge boss fight with a god or something (the story makes absolutely no sense) that is surprisingly not that hard. Then he's all "Oh, even though you just kicked my butt, you haven't won, blah blah, generic villainous non-sense, when is the gaming industry going to hire real writers so I can get better lines, I deserve better than this," and you get sent to some sewer-like place (maybe not a sewer, I don't remember), at the end of which is some character who is supposed to be familiar but absolutely isn't, and he turns on you for some unknown reason (if he wasn't an enemy the whole time, who knows?).

The only enemy I had to avoid initially were those massive turtle things. Everything else should be easy enough to kill, if you're done the right thing up until that point in time.
I never really found the difficulty skew in FFXIII too much. Yes, it spikes, but smart play is still going to get you by.
