Hmmm... Let me get this out of the way: I'm biased. I want to like Nintendo's conference better than the others because Wii is the only console I own this generation (due to limited funds, not because I dislike the others). But I still think this was a pretty solid conference.
Starting out with Zelda was a great way to start the conference with a bang. Sure, the announcement that it will only arrive in 2011 is disappointing, but the gameplay shown looked really impressive. Nice art style, new weapons, great controls. In the end it might be "just another Zelda game"... but this looks as unique and interesting an adventure as we've seen on Wii.
Also it's not like there weren't other big names to prop up the Zelda announcement -- Kirby; Golden Sun, Metroid: Other M, Dragon Quest; Donkey Kong Country. Oh yeah, and all of those titles are scheduled to arrive THIS YEAR. That's a huge selling point when so many E3 advertised games end up being distant hopes... hope Sony is taking notes, since they often show games that are still years away from release.
3DS news is tough to rate. I had low expectations going in, but had to admit that the presentation made me reconsider. Addition of an analog stick is long overdue improvement for a Nintendo portable. Announced software lineup from third parties was particularly impressive, and the Kid Icarus revival has a lot of appeal for retro gamers like me (although I'll remain skeptical until more details are available). And did I see a tease that Star Fox might be coming down the line? 3D movie releases for the 3DS is also a cool idea -- although I would be more excited if I didn't find the whole 3D movie concept a bit gimmicky.
Biggest surprise for me? Epic Mickey didn't look terrible. I know that's not overwhelming praise, but I had virtually written off that title as being a licensed cash-in. The early information wasn't promising, but what was shown and discussed today totally changed my mind. Taking a Wii exclusive game that I expected to be bad and turning it into a point of excitement is a huge swing.
Nintendo's press conference certainly impressed more than Microsoft's. A lot of things mentioned were either known or at least rumored before the event, but as the market leader Nintendo wasn't under the same pressure to shock and amaze as Sony/Microsoft are. Avoiding any serious missteps and exceeding expectations at nearly every turn means Nintendo clearly deserves a strong grade... but the lack of any real showstopper prevents it from being the clear winner this year. Let's see what Sony can bring to the table!
But when they Show off DK, I was like "Hes Finally back, to kick some tail"
For you, the day LordJumpMad graced your threads, was the most important day of your life. But for me, it was Tuesday. [url=http://www.backloggery.com/jumpmad]Unive...
A- from me, only because they had a couple minor problems here and there. Apple had similar interference issues recently.
Overall, though, I though it was an epic win. Nintendo is showing incredible love for their fans. Judging from the trailer, the 3DS graphics look to be on par with the PSP, just with the addition of 3D. The screens being different sizes looks a little odd, but I'm glad they did something about analog control. The Donkey Kong and Kid Icarus announcements were huge wins.
Overall, though, I'm just processing it all. Epic Mickey was the weakest part of the presentation to me. It just didn't look that fun or interesting compared to the first-party Nintendo games. The weakest game appeared to be Wii Party, but fortunately they didn't waste much time there. I'm intrigued by the Kirby game, but not sold on it yet.
Moco Loco If you find yourself spiritually drifting (as I was for far too many years), remember that Jesus can and will walk across the water to reach you and bring you back to shore.
Right... I kind of blocked that part out. Must be where the bias kicks in...
Realistically, seeing details about those games and some self-congratulatory numbers announced was kind of expected going in. Even though it sucked, it was expected suckage and kept short enough (and wedged between enough "real" information) that I didn't mind so much.
The grade was a close call between A- and B+... but announcing several retro franchises getting remade and making me excited for both Epic Mickey and the 3DS release just barely pushed the conference into the higher category.
(Regarding Epic Mickey, I've also heard some very positive comments from media at the event who got to try the game. It still probably won't be a Nintendo-quality game at release, but if the game is good and keeps the interesting concept it'll still be a great exclusive.)
Yeah A- for me too. That's exactly what I expected, so I wasn't disappointed. The fact that Project Sora is developing Kid Icarus Uprising makes it my most anticipated game ever right now.
I can't believe how much Nintendo shocked me. First Kirby, Kid Icarus, Zelda Skyward Sword looks very nice. Donkey Kong, Finally back yay, and the 3DS looks very interesting and i almost think i will buy it. Trade in my original DS and get it. But still Very nice conference i think they had alot of surprises.

I thought it was good. I was surprised to hear a lot of retro games coming back, especially the unveil of donkey kong country returns!!! I wish they could have shown the 3ds in game play though. I'm trading my dsi to get it.
Kid Icarus is not the launch title I wanted for the 3DS, but it'll do for now. 3D cameras, confirmed -- that's actually more exciting than Icarus. 3D movies? I'm skeptical, given the size of the screen.
Zelda's graphics and interface look wonderful. Donkey Kong Country, back again? Great. Did anyone catch how the multiplayer works? I couldn't tell if it was switch-when-hit like the old games, or true simultaneous.
Oh, almost forgot Kirby. Very cool graphical style. Also, Wii Party could be good when visiting family. It's basically like a 1st-party Mario Party at last, without Hudson involvement.
Agreed, Moco. Zelda looked awesome, but they had some issues which kinda killed a bit of the epicness. Still looks amazing, though. Epic Mickey looks good, but I agree it was the weakest part. Kirby Epic Yarn looked like Paper Mario meets Kirby ... and that's a VERY good thing. I also think I saw some co-op, not sure. Kid Icarus also was a big surprise, and looked very good. The voice acting was also really good. Mario Sports Mix was great looking too. I know alot of people didn't really care for that one, but I loved Strikers, and it looks like it's just like that with different sports. The Basketball game especially.
Donkey Kong Country Returns is my favorite part. It looked beyond amazing. It was the single best moment of E3, no matter what gets announced later. It looks like it's going to retain ALL of the greatness of the first 3. I hope it has co-op. The 3DS videos developers seemed to hint at alot. The Arwing flying out of the screen, one of the devs talking about Resident Evil (he basically confirmed it), and Hideo was saying he was thinking about a Metal Gear and how it would play on 3DS.
All in all, they dominated Microsoft, EA and Ubisoft, and Nintendo has ALOT to compete with.
The best strategy in the game: go up stairs and pause balls.
I came away very impressed by Nintendo's conference this year. They had something for everyone. Highlights for me were Zelda Skyward Sword, Donkey Kong Country Returns, Kirby Epic Yarn, Metroid Other M, Epic Mickey, Golden Sun, Kid Icarus and of course the 3DS. The Zelda demo troubled me a bit but I'm sure they'll iron out the control issues by the time the game hits the market. I was really hoping to see Pikmin 3, a new Starfox game, Animal Crossing for 3DS, Pokemon Black & White and Dragon Quest X but considering all that they showed this year I still came away very satisfied. Nintendo gets an A in my book.
