You get your own monsters and train them for battle. Fun, right?
You'll explore the island, gathering and raising monsters and pitting them against other monsters. Your goal is to raise the strongest monster on the island.

Go Jinouga! Use Electro Ball!
That game looks ugly as sin and the gameplay sounds derivitive. Guess we're not gonna be missing much from this one.
So yeah...I just played the Monster Hunters Freedom Unite demo again...and I actually liked it this time around. Like, a lot. I dunno, it just all clicked with me all of a sudden. So I guess I'll be getting one of these games soon. I'm not sure which I should get, though: Freedom Unite or Tri. I was just at Jay St. and I'm pretty sure they had both in stock for about the same price.
MHT would be good for starting out. MHFU is the better game overall (once you get used to the 'claw' you'll never go back D: ) and has lots more content, but it requires a PS3 with a wired connection to play online. Or Xlink Kai which is a lot more confusing.
I still say MHFU is better and it's what I recommend, but I played it after MHT which gives a good beginning tutorial on stuff MHFU expects you to know
Both of the games pretty much require the use of online FAQs/Guides if you want to be any good at them. Not like for a walkthrough, but because the games themselves barely tell you any of the advanced info that you need to know later in the game (skills, skills and... oh yeah, skills). Skills are actually pretty useful early on too, so if you do decide to get one of the games make sure you wear full armor sets when possible since they usually come with a skillset.
Oh yeah, and reading the instruction booklet is required for these games, so get a copy that includes one

Thanks for the info, I'm really gonna need it. I just picked up a copy of Tri today. Luckily my copy did come with a manual and I started reading it on the bus. (So THAT is how you get stuff from the enemies you kill!) I'm definitely gonna have to do some studying and I'll see if I can find a good FAQ. Thanks.
Also, don't be turned off by the few beginning quests, they're always "collect 200x of this mushroom" and "catch 10x this fish". The game starts opening up once you get past the 1* village quests.
Haha, nope. It takes out my three favorite weapons from MHFU (GL, Bow, DS) and replaces them all with a pretty underpowered (and somewhat fun to use) new unique weapon, the Switch Axe.
They wanted to start MHT with a clean slate, so they took out the weapons that were too similar to each other (ones I mentioned and HH). They also, unlike any previous entries, pretty much only used new monsters except for three big monsters they brought back from the first game.
The saddest part is, when they brought the GL back in MHP3 they completely changed it. It's hardly the same weapon anymore
That's really another reason why MHFU is better, it has so much content. More than any other MH game besides maybe Frontier. The only things MHT does better imo are the hitboxes (they absolutely suck at times in MHFU) and the online mode, which all the home console MHs have.
Edit: Btw I guess I should post this here. Picked up the original Monster Hunter on PS2 today! The controls will definitely take some getting used to, but it's pretty awesome so far xD
Too bad the GS has no charge and the hammer has no KO in this game. And there's no farm. And you can only hold like 10x of each item in your box at a time. And you can't send rewards directly to your box which means you have to get rid of them if your pouch is full after a quest. Same with items from shop. And since the online mode server things are shut down I can't fight any of those monsters or get any + armor, which means only the village monsters are available. :sigh:
Edit 2: What I really want is to play MH Dos. I'm hoping Capcom makes a HD collection with MHG and MH2 so I can import it. From what I've seen on youtube and stuff, MH2 looks like it could be the best MH ever. I reallly want to play this one. Even considering importing a PS2 u__u
Might play on Friday/Thursday (non-timelords). Will hop on the chat. Very rusty though...
QUEEN OF SASS
It's like, I just love a cowboy
You know
I'm just like, I just, I know, it's bad
But I'm just like
Can I just like, hang off the back of your horse
And can you go a little faster?!
Sounds good. I'll be setting it up over the next few days (well, whenever I can be bothered- hate moving stuff around!), so I'll be ready for a quest or two whenever we can get something organised.
Finally went back to Monster Hunter Tri after a long break, and ended up playing for 5 hours straight. This game is more fun than it should be - no really, while it has its charm, from a purely gameplay perspective, nothing about it is in any way appealing. I'm not even sure how the idea made it out of the board room to make so many aspects of the gameplay so tedious. They're just lucky everything comes together so well.
Anyways, I finished the one-star quests. and now I can finally trade to get some higher-end items, and find engriedients for cooking, though I'm guessing the stat-buff you get aren't permanent. I certainly hope the two-star quests are better than the one-stars, and I _really hope you know who doesn't show up again until I'm actually strong enough to fight him. Btw, where do I get Ice crystals? I need two of those to get all the Hunter gear.
@Mickeymac - I know what you mean. I can play this game for a couple of hours, then go "Why am I playing this?" and then proceed to play for a bit longer. It just comes together somehow. The stat-buff cooking if just for your one quest. You kinda get in a habit of doing it before each quest. I think you might be able to get some Ice Crystals in the cave in Sandy Plains, and maybe area 11, but I'm not 100% on that.
I've been getting in to Portable 3rd at the moment. Really enjoying it more than Freedom Unite, despite the fact it's in Japanese.
