Have you ever had a console of yours chipped or modded in some way?

Obviously it's difficult with cartridge media (though I do remember some soft-mod available for the DS), but it was widely available for consoles with disc media at one point at least.

Had the first PlayStation and Nintendo Wii chipped and never spent a fortune on games for those consoles after that point which was handy as I didn't have a lot of money in those days, but it didn't matter and I never missed out on the best games.

I get there's something special about owning the actual game but when you're broke, you gotta do what you gotta do!

Yes.

My NES is modded so it could play all kinds of cartridges. As you know there are type A and B cartridges in Europe. This is a region lock inside the region lock! Idiotic stuff! But if you remove a certain pin of the locking chip the console can play all types of cartridges!

My PS3 Slim is modded with CFW in order to play PS2 games and certain PS3 games. I really enjoy it.

I am also thinking about getting a Wii so I could play around with modding.

Some day I hope that the Xbox One X could be modded so I could do all kinds of Offline stuff on it! But we are far away from that now.

All my other consoles are mod free and I play them "as intended".

My Mega Drive is modded so that it can play asian-release games. As far as I can tell the 'mod' in that case simply involved breaking a bit of plastic off the cart slot so asian carts would physically fit. I only ever owned two asian-release games anyway - Sonic 2 (which best I can tell is absolutely identical to the western release) & Castle Of Illusion (so I could never read the text in the intro cutscene, but other than that also seems entirely unchanged)

I also installed homebrew channel on my wii a couple years ago, if that counts, but I'm yet to really do anything with it

I hacked my Wii, original Xbox, Xbox 360, DS and Vita but i actually didn't use them much and have played more on my unhacked PS4 with lots of bought games. Suppose I just enjoyed the challenge of hacking them myself and getting the games more than playing them

I had a mod-chipped PS1 to play Japanese games. Fist of the North Star, DBZ games, Pepsi-Man, etc. I also had a mod-chipped original Xbox. That was my favorite platform for years. I was a dirty pirate, playing ripped original Xbox games and emulators for various classic consoles. Shortly before the 360 launched I gave that Xbox to a friend.

I'm not sure I'd ever send my hardware to someone else I didn't know to be modded, but I did modify my first GameCube, replacing the top section of the body to give it a larger disc compartment so that I could burn ISOs onto cheap discs. I spent more time modding it and burning the discs than I ever did playing them.

More recently I have tried buying a xenogc chip to try installing in one of my Japanese GameCubes, but it never arrived and I haven't got round to ordering another one. I have a multiregion Action Replay disc so I'm not desperate to do it. I'm not doing it for piracy as I own nearly every GameCube game I could want.

The most I've done is hacking my old 2DS. It was an interesting process and I'm glad I didn't brick it.

But thanks to it I can now backup my DS games to play on the R4 a friend gave me. I can also install my 3DS cartridges directly to the 2DS. But, huh, I don't have much use for that at the moment.

Maybe once the cartridges themselves start failing, like my DS games are.

I have a modded Original Xbox that I got from a friend, that I use to play arcade games on and I myself modded an OUYA years ago.

Honestly though, I rather play games in the original format if I can just because it doesn't feel right and I don't mean that from a morality point either I mean it just doesn't feel right. I remember playing SNES games on my friends modded Xbox like Super Mario World and FZero and using a Duke controller just felt off.

That and I rather support the devs and companies that made the games for all their work and to keep them in business to keep making great games.
