If this turns out to be true, then this is going to be a giant thorn in the side of Amazon and Google — probably even Nintendo, especially if it's in the $200-300 price range. If it is priced around there then that might explain why they keep refusing to update the iPod Touch.
For my part I'd cry tears of joy. I'm dying to upgrade my iPad 1 to something more powerful but I simply can't afford (or justify, lol) spending another $600 on a new one. I also love the smaller size of the 7-inch tablets. <3
I would be surprised - Steve Jobs hated that "mid range" form factor.

I would be surprised simply because I would have thought it was too soon in product cycles for Cook's vision to start overtaking Jobs' - I was thinking 18 months.
An iPad mini sounds lovely! My mom had recently gotten the latest iPad from her work, and I'm currently trying it out (too bad the internet's abyssmal here). My first complaints: it's too heavy and I don't like the slippery aluminum back-panel. I'd be happy if a lighter mini iPad was released if I like it.
I wouldn't say it's a threat to Nintendo, but surely to Google and Amazon. I'd be tempted to get a "mid-range" iPad than a $500-$600, imo too expensive for what it is.
I see no reason anyone would want that, unless it's noticeably cheaper.
That would be the point.
I don't think they're going to release a considerably smaller version for the same exact price, because people just like small things. Some of you guys and business topics, I swear. lol

Who knows. It's Apple, they have loads of money in the brand name and fanbase alone. They could easily make it overpriced and get lots of sales out of it.
Looking forward to: No More Heroes: Travis Strikes Again

Their products are not overpriced as is. They are comparable to similar deices on the market, and the consumer decides the price. If they were truly overpriced they would not be as successful.
There's a difference between the market definition of 'overpriced' and the personal definition. Often times people cannot separate the two. Either way, a mini ipad being 'overpriced' in your eyes doesn't change anything, it will still be cheaper than it's larger comrades.
Just like every other tablet on the market. ie. Galaxy tab 7 inch vs. 10 inch.
