I don't really know how to open this, but here goes.
First Topic: Graphics ARE NOT more important than gameplay. The console wars will always be fought. There's no stopping it. There will obviously be one-sided fanboys which will stick with their console to the death. But, why are these console wars being fought? There's always debate over which console is better. Every console has unique bells and whistles (Wii has VC, 360, has downloadable retail games, PS3 has blu-ray) but, these never seem to be addressed. Even how good the games are is seldomly addressed. No. The main thing ever addressed is (unsurprisingly) the graphics! Yes, one of the leat important things in a game is what is fought over.
Why is this? Why do most gamers think graphics matter the most? You can have a game that looks photo-realistic and play like crap. But some peoples favorite game is Goldeneye or Super Metroid which look dated by today's standards. Why is this? Because they play amazingly! Most gamers today think, "Hmm... good graphics. It must be good!" WRONG. That is the main reason the Wii is hated on. One of the single most annoying comments I always here is, "It looks good for a Wii game." So what if the graphics aren't incredibly real? Graphics don't make a game good. They make a game good-looking. The Wii has just as many good games as the PS3 or 360. It just also happens to have more bad games. There are still people who are extremely excited when they get an NES for their birthday. Why? Because, even though the graphics weren't as good as the Genesis', the gameplay on some of the games were unbeatable. There will always be someone that sees a Wii game that looks like a great-looking XBOX or PS2 game and say it has horrible looking N64 graphics. And there's obviously going to be someone reading this that says "Well we don't want to have games that look like N64 or PS1 games." Well, they don't! The people saying those comments are immature and ridiculous.
All of that being said, gamers need to learn that graphics aren't what make games good. Will they ever? Probably not.
Second Topic: 2D Vs. 3D.
A while ago, I was watching some awesome footage for Muramasa. My friend (a 360 addict who only plays Call of Duty) came over and asked, “Why you like 2D so much?” I responded, "Because it’s awesome. I love both 2D and 3D.” Now, his my friend is the type of person who won’t try anything new, so he is very one-sided.
I love 2D. I have only owned Nintendo Consoles (besides a PS2) since I was born. I’m 16 which means I wasn’t there for the old gaming days of yore. But I do absolutely love 2D.
Soon after, the thought came up again, so I asked him, “Why don’t you like 2D?”
He responded with the most naive, uncalled for, and overall stupidest answer I’ve ever heard: “Because it doesn’t take much skill to play.”
I was baffled. Has this generation of gamers sunk this low? I showed him Contra, Ninja Gaiden (NES), and Blazing Lazers. 2D games have always taken more skill than 3D (with the exception of Mario). He was still stubborn. “It doesn’t take much skill to get good at them…” What kind of a statement is that? The Smash Bros. series takes immense skill to get good at, and it’s a 2D playing field… Games from the NES, SNES, Genesis etc. Gamers are too stubborn to look at the past and realize the great gaming giants. Most of those games were extremely hard and only the most skilled players could get through them…
Have gamers today really been reduced to ONLY first-person shooters? I love them, but what happened to 2D?
He said that 3D games were always better than 2D games. Mostly because they sell more. I brought up Shadow Complex: 3D graphics on a 2D terrain. He said it wouldn’t sell more than Gears of War, making it worse.
This generation of gamers is shutting out what made gaming great in the first place. Why? Because developers are leaving 2D behind. I’m not saying to stop making 3D games. No, by all means, I love them, but why does 2D have to die (especially like this)?
Third Topic: Review Scores ARE JUST OPINIONS.
"This game is better than that game." "No it isn't." "Yes it is." "How?" "It got a better score on IGN." "Well mine got a better score on Gamespot."
WHO CARES?! Scores are just opinions for everyone to see. Reviews can be summarized into 3 categories: 1. The game is good. 2. The game is okay. 3. The game is bad.
7-10 = Good 5-6 = Okay 1-4 = Bad
The whole decimal system is absolutely pointless (no pun intended). If a game has a 8.9 and another game has a 9.1, there's really no difference. All you know is that those two games are thought to be good. For more on the decimal thing, watch Adam Sessler's Soapbox on Killzone 2 on the G4 site.
But what if a game gets reviewed badly on one site but does well on another site? IT DOESN'T MATTER. If you like the game, then good for you. If you don't like is, then good for you. Reviews are just opinions. They don't physically make a game any better or any worse. Now I'm not saying to never look at reviews. I look at them all the time. If there's a game you are interested in, by all means look up a review, just keep in mind that the score doesn't matter. It is wise to look up a review because it points out what the game does right and wrong, and if it gets a good score, then try it out!

I don't agree with this comment: "The Wii has just as many good games as the PS3 or 360." However, your argument about review scores is really great. I think everything's simply relative.
You are 100% true. Fans said that Sonic Unleashed for the Wii sucks compared to the Xbox 360 and PS3, but I don't care, if I like the Wii version, I like it, they need to get over it.
While the addition of the Werehog wasn't necessary, it played well. People disagree, I don't care.
And for the Wii, oh, gamers are so narrow-minded that it baffles me. How they manage to influence so many people is a mystery. There was a good reason why until two days ago that I was a full-fledge Nintendo fanboy. I could not put up with all these hate comments and I wanted it to end. Sadly, the effort backfired and I know I have received only haters.
People need to realize that opinions are opinions and you can't change them. Sadly, former Nintendo fans who turned there back on Nintendo due to being impatience have left an permanent scar on the video game industry. Why? They failed to realize that not everyone hated Nintendo today. I feel glad that I have an decent community to go to and properly discuss anything related to Nintendo and this is the site. I also feel relived that I'm no longer a Nintendo fanboy, now that I might finally get my hand on an PS3.
People think that graphics are the most important thing in the game, which is another leading cause of Wii haters. They are not. Bomberman Blast isn't the most pleasing Wii game, but it was sure **** fun. Kirby's Adventure was an NES title at the end of the NES lifespan when the Genesis and SNES was the big deal, but I absolutely loved it and consider it my favorite NES game. While the Wii may never have graphics, online features, or hardrive of the PS3 and 360, gameplay is the strong point and people fail to realize that.
Also, I don't see any Wii haters praising the Wii for having 2D games. Remember 15 years ago when 2D was the standard? Apprently, most of them don't. They rather scream and yell alone in there bedroom playing Halo 3 then spend time with an classic game from the past, and this is where Virtual Console steps in.
And while reviews do help me decide if I want the game or not, I have went against the review with an different opinion. Sonic Unleashed for the Wii was an great game to me, but Super Smash Bros. Brawl was an huge disappointment.
Overall, your rant is excellent and I apperatice it. If you like to do an rant on the Nintendo hardcore fanbase, just leave it to me. I have experience the horror of the fanbase behavior and will exploit them.
I I especially hate it how video games are now immediately associated with FPS's.
...what? are you kidding me? most people i know that are non gamers when asked about games say they know mario, not private soaps or masterchief and other fps things. I disagree with that completely, completely untrue in my opinion (stressing the fact that its my opinion so this doesnt start anything)

I always thought the Wii version was supposed to be way better. EDIT: Wait a sec, Super Smash Bros. Fan isn't a fan of Super Smash Bros. Brawl? Wow, never saw that coming. Also, Halo 3 may be overrated but I don't think it's boring.

For a perfect example of what this thread is talking about, pay a visit to my school. Everyone there is obsessed with the graphics and blood and gore, and whether or not it has an M-rating, yada, yada, yada. It makes me so sick. Bunch of FPS-obsessed tools.

I was thinking.... isnt complaining about fanboys going against this? I mean, it their opinion that their games are better, yes they cant accept that others think otherwise, but isnt complaining about them kinda the same thing?
Ok, ive read it now, dont feel like commenting on most of it since many people have said everything here before on this site and elsewhere, which is a good thing. Anyway, as i already said i disagree with the FPS statement and even though what your friend said was not well thought out, for him he probably doesnt play or rarely plays a 2D game so obviously his bias will be there, just do you and let him do his own thing, neither of u are wrong for feeling differently about something.
If u think im bashing ur statement, im not, i will say graphics are not really important, but as i think u said they do help a game if its a good game at the same time. And finally i agree with what u said about review scores, as ive said numerous times before, to me they are a guideline for games, especially if im deciding between games of the same genre, ill research negative and positives for one and see what features best suit me and so forth. Some good points there man (but beware of the AlexSays)

Saying 2D graphics suck is like saying black and white films suck. Some people dont care to broaden their horizons beyond perceived popular tastes... its a shame. Having said that I've been retro gaming for some years and it seems to me interest has actually grown in some ways. I started with an Atari 2600 whereas now there is an entire history for kids to discover and they can even skip all the really bad games! I dont think 2D will ever go away, it works so well.
me personally am still a sucker for 2D Games old skool sonic and mario games which i still play but it gets me sick to my stomach for a person to say 2d sucks when if you think about it if there was no 2d playing then they wouldn't have thought of 3D cause if 2d failed well in all honesty 3d wouldn't even exist graphics though do not make a game if the game play is the way you like it whether its 2d or 3d or next gen then so be it but if your a fan of the 2d platformers and are only looking for those then enjoy them you can't change everyone though.
