@Ralizah
Yeah FF12 is the perfect balance on the linear/open issue for me. Fairly open explorable chunks that are linearly sequenced is the best solution to that problem in my mind. (and I think it's what FFXV is doing)

My only problem with 12 was I found the characters and story quite boring and the lack of gameplay variety annoying.

@Dezzy Definitely agree on the story being forgettable. I liked Balthier, Fran, and Ashe, but Vaan was such a terrible protagonist that the other characters pretty much start ignoring him halfway through the game!

@Ralizah
I liked Balthier and Basch as characters. But even they don't really have much character development throughout the story. For the most part each character ends the game as the same person they were when it started. Which is a massive departure from most FF games.

@Dezzy Definitely. I find the cast much more tolerable than most of the people in X and XIII, though.

FFXII lives or dies based on how the player takes to the gambit system, in my opinion. It's not a game you play to take an emotional journey with loveable, multifaceted characters.

@Ralizah

I just found the world of FF12 to be very well imagined and designed. That's what kept it being a decent game for me.
Loved Rabanastre especially. A really well designed town or city is a great benefit to an RPG.

You guys are putting me off FFXV and are making me ponder about buying the Final Fantasy XII remaster instead!

Like I said on the previous page, coursework, essays and exams really got in the way of me playing FFXII back in the day, and since @Dezzy says that the world is well designed and full of imagination - an actual fantasy world too - I may consider revisiting Ivalice again.

Vaan isn't the best main character, that much I can agree on, and wearing that silly half-arsed body armour looks just as daft today as it did then... but at least he is awkward/different I suppose.

@Dezzy The world of Ivalice is easily the most fully-realized one in the entire FF series, especially considering how many games have taken place in it, but it's a bit too realistic and grounded. It wasn't a huge draw for me. I prefer the more oppressive and alien sights in FFVII's Gaia. Heck, if I can say one nice thing about FFX, it's that Spira has some of the most consistently interesting worldbuilding in the entire series.

I'm actually still waiting for the right time to jump into the franchise. I've always wanted to try one, just to experience it, even though I know it's probably not going to be my type of game. Maybe I'll try the inevitable complete edition of FFXV when that comes out next year, or maybe I should give the FFVII remake a go when that comes out..

My introduction to the series was dawn of souls on the GBA.

That was a fun one.

Specially because it was two.

It kinda represents the rest of series almost perfectly... On one side you have the safe, traditionalistic fantasy game. And on the other you have the story-driven, risk-taking game with the one annoying gimmick that won't return.

@Octane

You not played ANY of them?

Did you play Xenoblade Chronicles? That's a good place to start for a Nintendo fan.

If you like that, you'll like most of the Final Fantasy series.

@Dezzy No, that's not on I am afraid.

Octane is currently playing through one of the longest games of this generation, The Witcher 3, and - once completed - he will then go on to playing Bloodborne like he PROMISED ME he would!

@Dezzy I have Xenoblade, played it for a bit, got bored and put it back on the shelf. That's why I want to play a FF game, to see if those are any better or different. I mean FFVII still gets a lot of praise today, that's why I'm hoping the remake will be good. I hope that SE doesn't butcher the release though.

Octane

@Peek-a-boo Don't worry, it'll happen eventually

I'll make exceptions for TLG, Horizon and Zelda, but others than that, Bloodborne is the next game in my backlog list.

@Octane

The only real difference is the battle system. They all play fairly similarly to Xenoblade in the general structure and story.

Just imagine Xenoblade with the Bravely Default battle system and that's pretty much every FF game before 12 (obviously with a lot of variety in the worlds, stories and characters)

It's worth pointing out that 15 and 7 remake are both going for more action oriented battle style though. I imagine 15 will be closer to the Witcher than to the original FF7.

@Dezzy Octane and I have jokingly gone back and forth about the games that we said we shall both begin to play over this past year, which I am sure he will attest to too!

Not sure if I appreciate the somewhat snarky tone of your 'wife' comment though. The exclamation mark at the end of my previous post is there for a reason.

@Octane Final Fantasy XII is the game XC wanted desperately to be but could never live up to.

@Peek-a-boo "You guys are putting me off FFXV and are making me ponder about buying the Final Fantasy XII remaster instead!"

Do it. It's a remastered version of "Final Fantasy XII International Zodiac Job System," which we never got in the West. Among other things, it balances the game's difficulty, adds a jobs system, gives the game a couple of different New Game Plus modes, adds in a button that speeds up gameplay, and, apparently for the remaster, will include the ability to autosave.

There doesn't need to be any "instead" going on. There's months between them. Maybe a 6 month gap even.

I'm definitely looking forward to the FF12 remaster. Was really pleased to see the time fast-forward option they've added. Although what would've been great is if they'd done away with some of the loading areas entirely. The towns are all segmented into a few different screens. Would've been great if they'd cut that out. Sadly not.

you have that backwards. Xenoblade is the game FFXIII would've been if they just improved upon XII.

Although I prefer the turn-based old-school JRPG style for most FF games and RPG's in general, and Final Fantasy II & III U.S. (a.k.a Final Fantasy IV & VI in Japan) will ALWAYS be my favorite games in the series for music/story/emotion — I AM interested in playing World of Final Fantasy, Final Fantasy XV, and of course, the upcoming remake for VII. I'm willing to take the plunge. Sadly, although I do own a copy, I've still never played FF XIII (or any in that series) or FF IX on Playstation 1. Worth giving them a go with my lack of time? Oh, and to those that have mentioned never playing ANY Final Fantasy... start with Mystic Quest on SNES. It's short and beatable, has GREAT music, and does not have random battles. From there you can jump to Final Fantasy IV, even if it has to be the upgraded DS or iPhone version. And from there, maybe FF X Remastered. Just my opinion though. I don't mine linear, actually. It's nice always knowing where to go next..

I keep hearing that I would love the Bravely Default games due to my love for that classic style. I wish I had more time for RPG's, but if I'm going to attempt to start a new one, I want it to be GREAT. I do like to grind, while listening to music or watching TV sometimes, to build up characters and then kick some ass later...

Happy Thanksgiving all!

@Dezzy Yeah, a more action orientated battle system sounds more appealing to me. Turn-based battles can drag on for too long a lot of times.
