There's a demo out now for Final Fantasy VII Remake Intergrade on Switch 2. Save data transfers and there's a bonus in the full game for playing the demo.
I'm already into it and ya, they killed it with this version. It looks fantastic, both in docked and handheld- noticeably sharper resolution in handheld than on Steamdeck (gotta love that DLSS that rocks out 1080p in portable mode!), and it runs smooth as butter.
So glad I waited to play until now! It was tough- I was tempted to just play through back on PS4, and again was tempted on PS5 and Steam, but every time I ended up putting it down and saying, "Nah, this is gonna come to the next Nintendo console. That's the version I want to experience".
And here it is.
Psalms 22:16 (1,000 yrs before Christ)
They pierced My hands and feet
Isaiah 53:5 (700 yrs before Christ)
He was pierced for our transgressions
As I prepare for the Final Fantasy VII Remake, I started to wonder if I should play the original. But I can't stomach those blocky PS1 character models.
Then I found this- the Omnislash Project mod for the Switch version of the OG Final Fantasy VII. Just installed it, and it makes the game a lot more palatable.

For me my main issue with the modern ports (based off the 1998 pc version iirc) is that they had these high res blocky models on top of the original psone resolution backgrounds only with a filter on the background which makes the models stick out like a sore thumb, i did end up playing the psone version on vita (through the psone classics release) a while back and it felt more like i remembered since the smaller screen combined with the more consistent game assets made it closer to how it was originally without going full CRT-TV
The versions of FFVIII and FFIX had similar issues though it felt more noticable on VII since seeing those models in high-res really didn't do them any favors (wheres on the psone version they had an abstract, almost 2d-sprite look to them a lot of the time) theres also a bunch of smaller visual effects which just looked a bit...off in the PC version such as shadows being solid black circles instead of gradients which just looks less pleasant imo.
then again this being square enix it wouldn't surprise me if a few years down the line there were updated ports/remasters considering how often a lot of their games get released.
on the flipside its nice to hear that FFVII remake is sounding good on switch-2, if rebirth and the third game are up to the same standards as the remake demo on switch-2 seems to be it sounds like the system will be an amazing way to play the remake saga. plus remake and especially rebirth were probably the most fun i had with a single player FF in years
just found out two days ago that Final fantasy VII Remake Inergrade is being released for X Box One this week on the 22nd. news to me since i never heard any news about that at all
I'd already beaten the demo, but I transferred my save and sunk a few more hours in last night right after launch. Still impressive as ever.
Is there a good strategy for beating those enemies with shields? I really struggled with those, as my attacks bounced, and when I'd cast fire it got blocked to do just a smidge of damage (at least against the boss). I'd wait for openings but could only get one hit in bedore he'd block and bounce my attack. And since I couldnt land attacks I couldnt charge the gage for fire which was the only thing doing any real semblance of damage.

I think most people (not all, but most) have kinda lost interest in Xbox, to the point even Digital Foundry said they were losing money making Xbox vids. Probably why they only showcased the Switch 2 release.
It's unfortunate but, we all saw it coming a mile away. And of the Xbox fans remaining who are still loyal, I don't think JRPGs are their forte anyways.

This game isn't like a shorter experience such as Resident Evil or Street Fighter so I won't be double dipping but I'd definitely encourage any Switch 2 owner who hasn't played FF VII Remake elsewhere to give it a look. Some longtime fans had problems with the combat and story decisions but I really had a great time with the 60+ hours I put into this on PS5. I tend to prefer more action-based RPGs so that's probably why I really dug the combat. The new story stuff I can completely understand why it bothered some, but to me it wasn't terrible and I like all the leading cast and their interactions. Can't wait to start Rebirth next.
@JaxonH
regarding the asking for advice with those shield enemies i haven't played through the game in a while so dont take this as absolute or anything (will be replaying it on SW2 when getting round to it, currently playing through some older Trails and dragon quest though) but i remember with a lot of close combat stuff that when playing as cloud his punisher mode was really good with anything that was blockable (just make sure that you are in that mode since dodge rolling cancels out of it) again this is just a vague recollection though.
I played through the demo twice - once at PAX and again at home...but booting up the game today to start from the beginning, I wanted to do it all again. This morning was able to make it through to Ch2 - and what a great looking game! I have been waiting a long time to experience this.
@JaxonH it’s insane man. I haven’t played in HH yet but on the tv I was blown away. Played for 2 hrs last night and I’m well into ch 2. It’s crazy seeing some of the ps1 locations in this game too and how much better they look. I’ll be flipping between this and FE this whole weekend.

I'm on Chapter 17 in Path of Radiance (probably the most famous chapter in the game, split into 2 parts where Ike finally promotes) but then Final Fantasy VII Remake released and I haven't been able to convince myself to close the game and go back to FE PoR ever since. Currently Level 12 in Final Fantasy.
I'm so glad I waited to play on Switch 2. Bought on PS4 many years ago, played for an hour, and was like eh, I want this hybrid. Nintendo's next gen system will surely get a port. Then I bought again on Steam for Steamdeck, played an hour and was like eh, it's still not hybrid, and kinda blurry tbh.
Been a long time coming but that waiting has finally paid off. And, no waiting a decade for the sequels to follow up afterward (couldn't imagine playing a game split into 3 parts and waiting 5-6 years between each piece of it).

@JaxonH I totally get it. I think I am on ch 15 of FE and I couldn’t pull myself away from FF to play it. I’m going to make it a point to play 1 chapter of FE every night before firing up FF7. Gotta keep both alive simultaneously.
I actually also own it on ps4 but didn’t even crack the seal as I too was waiting for a hybrid version. Glad I did, it’s beautiful on S2.
@NintendoByNature
I'm getting so into FF7 Remake, I started playing the original FF7 on Switch but with the Omnislash Mod, and the game already included a 3x speed toggle, Instant Limit Break toggle and No Encounter toggle. Combined it's actually a fairly tolerable... nay, dare I say enjoyable experience.
Now I wish I'd played this beforehand to be able to recognize the callbacks and differences. It's cool experiencing it in reverse though. I fell from Reactor 5 into a flower bed with Aerith, which is not how it happened in Remake.

@JaxonH I only recall watching my neighbor play Ff7 back in the day but never played myself until 2019 or 2020? I can’t fully remember. But even decades later it actually does hold up pretty well, if you can stomach the blockiness. It quickly became one of my all time favorite games.
Even from the start the aerial flip cloud does off the train is a call back to the OG. You should eventually go back and finish the original if you find the time. It’s probably my second favorite FF, although I haven’t played them all.
I thought I heard a rumor that they’re remaking FF9 which is my favorite. I can only imagine how great that’ll be if true. That’s a phenomenal story too, and a great world to get lost in.
Side note: did quite a few side missions in the slums tonight to get some items and EXP. This may be the best Arpg combat ever btw.
