For flip's sake, I'm just saying that fan-games shouldn't be used to generate money using another company's trademarks. That's all.
The reason fan-games are made is probably because it was just taken up as a small hobby/project by a few people who are fans of a certain franchise, not necessarily because they aim to get into that industry. When it comes to that, it isn't even a fan-game anymore. It seems your point is to eradicate them altogether.
Well, fine. I have no problem with that. All I'm saying is just that while they exist, people shouldn't use them the wrong way to their advantage; that is, to make gold bucks.
If people want to make real games and get real money, they should study and find their way into the industry, just as you said.
I just tried that Super Mario Bros. X and the level editor is pretty confusing to use. I prefer Mario Builder, but you can't use a game controller in that one.
I hope you're joking, because that's almost painfully arrogant.
Anyways, Super Mario Bros. Crossover is easily the best example of a fan game. It's truly excellent and I'm surprised Nintendo hasn't done something similar before
The best strategy in the game: go up stairs and pause balls.
@shadx: No, I'm not joking. Whether the people creating fangames know it or not they are breaching the law. Lots of people are under the false impression that because they aren't making money it's okay. When told that what they are doing is illegal they are often very defensive and come up with all kinds of justifications. Most are arguing personal opinion over law and some just don't care that it's illegal.
People who make fan-games need to know that what they are doing is not in fact ,as Gamelord08 said, "honoring" their favourite franchises but a huge show of disrespect. You don't steal from people you love to show them how much you care. The best way for these game creators to honour their favourite franchise is to create original works that pay homage to them instead of ripping sprites (sometimes from several differant game series) just so they can make a game and enjoy some popularity on the internet. To me when somebody creates a good fan-game I consider it a waste, only because all that potential could have easily been directed into creating their own unique IP.

@Usagi-san: You seem so intent on how fan games are breaking the law. Please do state what law they're breaking, especially when they clearly state that their games are not affiliated with the respective trademark owners, all trademarks used are that of their respective owners and they are non-profit creations. It's not "stealing", as you call it. A thief doesn't say where they stole their creations from.
Not everybody who makes a fan-game is looking to go into the industry and create their own IP. Maybe they're just looking at a small project for fun. Maybe it's a hobby. Don't be so intent on accusing every fan-game creator of being too lazy to actually enter the industry professionally, because they most likely don't want to anyway. They're not all bloodthirsty popularity moguls.
And yes, using somebody else's work without permission is stealing. The message about ownership doesn't change a thing if they don't have permission to use the artwork or characters. Neither does the fact that it is a non-profit creation.

The idea of fan games as tributes are something that should be encouraged. Unfortunately, there's so many copyright problems and people who will try to make money off it instead, it just isn't worth the time for people to do it.
