I started out on the grand ol' 2600, so i'm always dumbfounded at where we are graphically these days. Though ironically, there are plenty of 2600 games that i still enjoy more than modern games.
Regarding recent gaming gens, I think the 3DS version of Ocarina raised an interesting observation; it didn't seem that much improved graphically to me at first, as in my memory, that's how the game looked — though when you actually compare the two, it's obvious how much it is improved.
It had the same art style, just with improved textures and slightly more polygons.
Yep. Always crazy playing, say, Batman Arkham City after playing some Super Mario Bros.
Speaking of batman, I'm amazed at how far we've come in terms of animations and artificial intelligence as well.
ESPECIALLY artificial intelligence. It's truly astounding.
Only a few developers are taking the time to make games with good animation and AI. They are still a long ways off from catching up to Pixar and Dreamworks.
Only problem I have with today's graphics is how some shadows can look pixelated during real-time rendered cutscenes. I've seen this in mostly Unreal Engine 3 games though (Arkham Asylum/City, War for Cybertron, Section 8 Prejudice, etc.)
They only thing that i get worried about is it getting to the point where all games are made realistically. Then we would never get to see the charming art style of Skyward sword type graphics, or the charming simplicity of Spore!

Well, my adventures through graphics land has been a bit of a mixed bag. I kinda find the 4th generation (N64) and 5th generation (GC) graphics more invigorating. I think of it as this way: when I see something new, I'm so captivated by it (3D capabilities from PS/N64 consoles); when I see that new thing improve, I enjoy it even more (GC/PS2); from there on, I start getting tired of that thing. To keep the graphics trend from getting stale, they should do something new in this tech: do more than just improve and refine the tech (like more polygons, higher texture detail, more shininess to textures, shadows, lighting, etc.), create distinguished and memorable atmospheres, add a variety of art styles. I don't know, I'm just thinking whatever pops up in my head.
When did Crysis come out? 2007? That game still blows most games today out of the water on a good PC. Graphics can be so much better than we are currently seeing on most games, we just need new consoles to see more of it.

With animation, no doubt. But I'm pretty sure that's more of a hardware limitation than anything.
The best strategy in the game: go up stairs and pause balls.
What I will be more impressed at is more realistic animation. Say your fighting a Dragon. It doesn't do... SLASH.... SLASH, WISH FLAP, FIRE BREATH, SLASH. I would like to see it attack and move unpredictably. Instead of looking like it's following basic commands. I don't think I can be further impressed with just polygons and such.

THIS THIS THIS THIS! Animations in most video games leave a lot to be desired, everything looks so fake and canned. Look at the stuff Pixar and Dreamworks do, the animation in their films is smooth and beautiful.
We are heading in the right direction with games like Uncharted, but a lot of that was done with motion-capture. Even GTA 4 had good character animation.
That will be the biggest improvement next gen, dynamic animation and AI that doesn't look robotic and repetitive.

Does Halo quality as a step in the right direction for character animation? I like what Bungie has done in the animation department when they worked on the franchise.

Amazed? I guess so. Maybe it's the fact that I've almost never been able to play my 360 games on an HD television, but HD visuals don't really matter to me. The only reason I even consider getting an HD TV nowadays is that it's nearly impossible to play a new game without one. Look at Skyrim, for instance: I can't even see the things in the top left corner, so whenever I get a reward for a quest, I have to dig around in my inventory to find out what I got. It's really fuzzy, and hard to see. So much is cut off of the screen now in games, that with the combined disadvantage of every important stat being on the very edge, you pretty much have to wing it when it comes to how much ammo or health you have in a game. Really annoying.
Frankly, I prefer sprites. It's cool to see life-like visuals being done now, but if I really wanted life-like visuals, I would look at something in real life, not on a screen. You don't see random sprite-people walking around, cool as that would be.
