Alright got my copy and read the mini novel that came with it. Just started the game and I'm really enjoying it so far.

The main city looks like crap and the game's performance takes a nosedive though. It honestly reminds me of Solenna from Sonic 2006, although to be fair, the townsfolk are a lot more interesting and you can enter some of the buildings. At least the navigation is very helpful even though it takes awhile to find all the stores (I still haven't found the weapon or armor shops).

I'm only an hour into the game and I must say that I like this soundtrack more the VIII's. A bit more moody, a bit less vibrant. It really suits the prison-like atmosphere of the town. Good stuff.

So which one is honestly the better game? Is it Ys VIII or IX?

@Zeldafan79 all I heard VIII is the better one as the island setting was better than the greyish town/dungeons but Ys IX is more of the same and that is not a bad thing

@Zeldafan79 I've finished both, Ys VIII is slightly better overall but it's really close. Ys VIII would be 92/100, Ys IX would be a 91.

Ys IX
+Larger areas to explore
+New movement abilities are great
+Graphics are better
+Dungeons are more fun
+Lots of call backs to previous games
-Some party members are a bit annoying
-Sometimes there are too many enemies on screen.
-Music not quite as catchy

So ready for my copy to get here! I pre ordered from Best Buy and says it will be here Friday but it hasn't shipped yet. I hope they ship it soon!

I picked this up and am really not too bothered with the graphical issues. That said, I can afford to wait for a patch. In the meantime, I've decided to play Ys VIII instead since I -cough- haven't quite played it yet.

That's a good idea, @Tyranexx .... Don't forget to let us know how that goes!

Really like this game so far. It does need a patch though. It runs satisfactory everywhere except the main city.

That aside, it's fun playing at work on my Switch Lite. I started a save on Steam also so I could get the 4K 60 experience, as I do with all Falcom games, but I'm further along on Switch because I play throughout the day at work.

Might hold off for a patch though since MH Stories 2 is out now. I love Ys, but I love Monster Hunter more.

@BruceCM Hah, will do! Not sure if in here or in a thread for VIII if there is one.

Fair point, though for some reason I thought that thread was long dead. That's what I get for posting during a work break....

I'm over 20 hours in and so far I think the performance issues are overblown. Yes, it's bad in the city areas but the dungeons are where it really matters and it runs at a mostly stable 30 fps there outside of one defense mission where the game suddenly became a slideshow for about 10 seconds then never happened again.

Just passed the 15 hour, rather quickly and surprisingly I feel. Much like VIII I just enjoy spending time in this world Falcom have created. Cozy characters, tight gameplay, a soundtrack that I find very pleasing, etc. Despite the performance dips, I'll probably still look back at Ys IX as a highlight release of 2021.

@Magician really looking forward to this after I finish Monster Hunter

Just played a bit of the PS4 version on PS5 and holy crap this runs so much better, there's really no going back after that, unlike Ys VIII which I preferred on Switch.

Just started it last night and I can say I really like this series (it is like confort food to me). So far just got out of the prison but did not find the slowdowns yet

@JaxonH
i remember seeing people mention a day 1 patch but i imagine the info was incorrect since apparently it didnt happen.

am a bit uncertain about whether or not it will get fixed, some of falcoms previous switch ports ended up having some issues which never got fixed (CS3 and 4, the latter had some broken text boxes, both had some performance issues but much worse in 4 iirc.)

@Mgalens
Ya, was wondering about that myself.

I guess you take what you can get on Switch. There’s always PC/Steamdeck for the games that don’t perform satisfactory.

@Snaplocket agreed, I played a fair bit last night and I did not find the town that bad as I was expecting from the reports here. It actually it feels more like motion blur than slowdowns as it happens mostly when turning.
