I don't mind the simplistic UI of the menu, though it could definitely use some customization like more themes, optional music etc.

What isn't excusable is the pile of garbage that is the eshop, no music, laggy as heck with the most bland ui and the organization is a mess.

Good... good
Now play Dragon Quest

The eshop is a different story though, I swear it lags my entire console

In the early days when there were like 50 games total on the eshop, I feel like it was ok. Now that there are over 10,000 though... somehow they just didn't design it well to have lots of games.

Yeah most likely.

They planned to add music to the eShop but decided not to.

I think the reason is, and someone else said this on another forum topic, that Nintendo was prepared for failure.

I love the Wii U. I also YouTube.

The Nintendo Switch UI is intentionally minimalistic to keep the gaming experience front and center. Some find it bland, but others appreciate its simplicity, as it doesn't distract from gameplay. It's a matter of personal preference and prioritizing gaming above all else. Carxstreetapkk.com

Its clearly deliberate. Nintendo can be dumb at times, but not this dumb. Why its deliberate, I don't know. Well, actually I do know, but it is considered crazy.

Destiny, justice and retribrution will be mine.

I’m glad we don’t have modern design like ads on the Home Screen.

The Switch technically has that with Featured News on the lock screen when waking the system, but they're super unintrusive, and also customisable based on the channels you add/remove.

It is. Nintendo likely heard complaints of the Wii U's UI being sluggish (it is more sluggish than I'd like but I've never had notable issues with it) and eating up more RAM than necessary. So instead of making a charming and snappy UI, Nintendo decided to go minimalist. It's pretty funny for a corporation known for having quirky IPs and hardware.
Switch 2/NG hopefully keeps the snappiness of Switch while making the UI experience more charming.
