Topic: Witcher, Breath of the Wild or Skyrim?

Witcher 3 is really a lot better than Skyrim, particularly on Switch, @JoeDiddley .... On PC, Skyrim is probably the most modded game ever, which can restore bizarrely lost content, provide bug/glitch fixes & qol improvements, as well as add new content!
The quality of the writing, overall, is much better! There's a lot more variety in side-quests, especially when some turn into entire series of quests. Certainly give it a try, if you already have it!

Witcher 3 arrived in the post this week as lockdown has made me crave some open adventuring again. Not sure if I will like it given my different reactions above. But it was quite cheap and I could always sell it on, so less risky to give it a bash.

I did the same, it is supposed to be delivered tomorrow. I already finished it few years ago on my laptop but i am still super excited Witcher will always stay on my best-games-ever list(well, botw is there too).
I would love to see other 2 witcher games on switch too. They may not be as great as the third one but still very good games

@BruceCM As you know, when my copy of Witcher 3 arrived instead I finally got the inspiration to play FFX (all the FFVII talk helped). I don’t have a PC set up unfortunately. With having a young family I rarely get the tv to myself. Switch allows me to hold these huge open worlds in my hands.

@kaile - cool. Interesting to see what you think of the compromises to get Witcher 3 running on Switch. It shouldn’t be too bad for me as it’s the only way I can play it

Witcher 3 still looks amazing on Switch, although I only played it handheld, so I can't say about on a TV, @JoeDiddley ... & it plays well, too! It was more saying that vanilla Skyrim really isn't that good, anymore. I played that on Switch as well & I appreciate what it's done for the genre, etc but it hardly compares to W3 now

I agree with those who say that BOTW isn't really in the same genre at all. Skyrim is an open world but has a serious "empty open world" problem. Witcher 3 isn't really an open world at all, since the content is level-gated and trying to go in any direction other than where the main story directs you will get you killed immediately. And neither game really has anything to explore, other than walking from map icon to map icon.

BOTW is practically a genre of its own. I expected it to be widely copied, but it hasn't been--apparently it is so good that nobody has been able to copy it at all.

The correct answer to this question is just "yes" tbh. There's no wrong answer.

Oh dear. Perhaps Call of Doody is more your kind of thing.

You guys had me at blood and semen.

All three? But each game is completely different. Skyrim on Switch is a fantastic experience and looks amazing, even with 400+ hours on a heavily modded version on PC I still enjoy playing through Skyrim on Switch. The Witcher 3 and Skyrim would be great for heavily story based stuff and lore. Skyrim more the lore and story than anything else. The Witcher has the better combat system and feels more up to date. Zelda is obviously more about the exploration and puzzle solving over story.

No. I like racing games, most Nintendo franchises, fighting games..... More broadly, I like games that either have an easy mode, are forgiving or allow you to build up strength to defeat enemies easier.

@JoeDiddley So i got witcher today, it looks really good on switch, obviously pc graphics are superior but switch version looks great too. I never was the one to complain about graphics though. Enjoying the gameplay and story is most important and switch version delivers those without issue.
On the side note, loading times surprised me, they are really fast.

@rockodoodle You can definitely build up your strength in any rpg that has leveling system. Can’t exactly do that in Zelda. What you can do there is collect decent weapons and clear shrines to make Link stronger. I highly recommend you try to play it a bit more, just try to explore, maybe you will change you first impression. If not, go with Witcher

Can you still enjoy Witcher 3 if you're not too keen on story driven games? How story heavy is it if you compare it to a game like Horizon Zero Dawn? Or Dragon Quest XI? I enjoyed the former although I skipped the story parts largely. I'm still troubling to get through DQ XI, mainly because it sometimes feels like I'm playing through a static movie.

Between those 3 BOTW by a wide margin. The other two aren't on the same level at least for me.

@Kaile great to hear the performance is good. Especially the loading times as I imagine long ones could break the immersion a bit in an open world game

I've played it on Switch, @JoeDiddley .... The performance is at least as good as on XB1 & you won't notice any downgrade in graphics in handheld mode I haven't seen any reviews of the Switch version that suggested there were any problems! There were only concerns before it came out

@toiletduck The Witcher 3 is all about the story. The combat is decent, the crafting and character customisation are respectable, and the open world is gorgeous and packed with secrets and things to stumble across, but it’s the writing that elevates this to one of the best games of the decade. Great characters, great stories, with even the smallest side quests offering up quirky twists and plot details. If you’re not a fan of story-driven games, The Witcher 3 might not be for you. However, if any game could convert you, it might be this one.

@Krull thanks, appreciate it. I still have my PS4 hooked up and play on TV mostly anyway, so I may pick it up cheaply.

@BruceCM great to hear. I’m looking forward to giving it a try. I hope I get on with Witcher 3 a lot better than Skyrim. I only played about 10 hours so I didn’t give it a proper chance. It felt clunky and not much fun to play, the truth is I just didn’t get very good at it. It didn’t click for me.

@BruceCM not sure when it’ll meet the top of my backlog. Timing wise it might be a bit big to try and sandwich between FFX and XC DE!
