As it stands the Joy-Con does not have a D-Pad in the classic sense, instead providing four buttons on the left hand side of the controller.
This means that when playing in handheld mode a D-Pad cannot be used, as the Pro Controller(the only way of playing with a D-Pad) can only be used as a plug-in controller and not in handheld mode.
How many people would want a separate Joy-Con to be sold with a D-Pad on the left side of the controller as opposed to the four buttons?
Personally I would like Nintendo to provide this, as with games like 2-D Platformers(such as Sonic Mania) would actuallt suit a classical D-Pad.

Those prices for Joy-cons are steep but if they make one with a real d-pad I'll pay. Especially if the buttons are multi-coloured SNES or New 3DS style.
I want to get a feel for the "d-pad"/directional buttons they have on the standard joy cons first I think. It'd really depend on how well those actually feel and work for actual gameplay before I'll start asking for a proper dpad
That's a good point, as we've only seen how the buttons look, and not how they feel.

Think it'll happen but maybe not this year.
Same here, on both counts.
I was hoping they would release one and have it available to pre-order but by the look of it we will likely have to wait, if it happens.
I just don't like the idea of having a handheld without a D-Pad, but trying to be optimistic...maybe the buttons will perform better than I think they will.

Yes please. I was surprised they didn't offer this as an alternative with the reveal. I plan on using the pro controller mostly, but I'd really like a proper d-pad on my joy con for on the go gaming.
