Topic: Which audience should Nintendo target with the NX?

Question is pretty self explanatory. The audience Nintendo goes for has a major effect on how it sells. The Wii aimed for a very broad audience, and saw success for it. Meanwhile, the Gamecube and Wii U tried to mostly appeal to children, and saw more limited sales. But broad isn't the only option. The 360 tried to be a "mature" console, and also saw success.

Which route do you think would be best for Nintendo?

I will have such a broad audience that everyone will own two of me!

The GameCube could have held a solid mature audience more than the WiiU could have. Was it really on purpose or just the way it ended up? The WiiU didn't really get a chance to do anything, it ended up being aimed at "everyone/children" like the Wii because it's a console with just Nintendo series on it.

Theoretically they should aim it at everyone, try and will another Wii gen again, but I highly suspect another WiiU-esque generation of games. A lot of Nintendo, maybe some Capcom, Namco, and some forced out Platinum game or something. Ones that appeal to children or the "Everyone" audience. In no situation should they drop the aim at the younger ones, it would be confusing for a lot of people I think, especially if you mirrored it totally from the WiiU to the NX. That's a huge change really fast. But I'm sure they could do it if they wanted.

I'd imagine it would be like:

  • Primary target for handheld is all gamers, especially kids, adolescents, and young adults.
  • Console would be geared towards for all the above, plus seasoned gamers, eSports, and a family-friendly system as well.

The Wii wasn't really actively marketed to children until much later in it's life. But they still succeeded with that group, I think in part because many kids buy into advertising for older groups, wanting to feel older.

While I agree Nintendo should continue designing the NX to be kid friendly, I believe they should steer clear of directly marketing to kids initially.

I think NX will be for ABSOLUTELY everyone but this time, it will have the appearance and content to make people buy it. I am convinced there will be a Netflix style service with all old and new Nintendo games available to play.
It will be powerful enough to port games too and incredibly easy for 3rd party port development.
There will be either the announcement of a new handheld or they will tell us that the New 3DS already has the ability to connrct with NX and production of old 3DS and games will be discontinued.
The controller will be a upgraded pro controller with the option to buy a new game pad for off screen play. Maybe a bundle at launch?
Just my thoughts on NX so far explaining why I think it's for everyone

They need to go for just about any audience. The most important thing is to really go for that audience. That was their biggest problem with the Wii U. They tried to go for everyone onstead of focusing on an audience then expanding off of that audience. People's needs weren't being met while PS4 focused on an audience and accurately explained/showed who this machine was made for. Even the XB1 had some trouble in the beginning with that.

People keep saying the Xbox One doesn't have Backwards Compatibility.
I don't think they know what Backwards Compatibility means...

Me. They should target me.

But seriously. Slightly older gamers who have drifted away from Nintendo. The 25-34 age demographic (maybe even the 35-44, but that's probably a bit too far), mostly own Xbox or PlayStation, last Nintendo console was Gamecube or maybe even the N64. Still relatively vocal on internet forums and such (hello! and I'm sure a few others of you fall into this range, as well), so capable of spreading lots of good will through the internet sphere if the NX is well-received. It's a demographic with lots of autonomous purchasing power and more disposable income than the 18-24 demographic.

E for everyone. That's most first party, the reason anyone buys a Nintendo.

NX needs to excite gamers first and foremost. But it should also have other capabilities to make it have a broader appeal.

Nintendo cannot out 'XB1' the XB1 with it's online shooters, because it's fans already have XB1's.
Nintendo cannot out 'PS4' the PS4, because a lot of gamers bought a PS4 as the 'does general console gaming' the best.

The one area Nintendo can attack is the 'family friendly market'. They have the IP's, and a strong (if not all as strong as it used to be) 3DS customer base to work from. I think if Nintendo can offer something different none of us can think of, with their quality of games combined with a basic controller lead console and some sort of crossover with handheld, you could perk the interest of those kids getting tired playing with their iPads.

Personally I think if you own a PS4, you aren't going to buy an NX to play COD and Assassin's Creed. 3rd Party is nice to have, but is quite a cutthroat business competing against the other 2 consoles. But if you had an NX system that played ALL the console AND handheld titles, plus key family friendly releases from Japan (Sonic, FF, Monster Hunter) and the US NFC games, and perhaps even big tablet games like Angry Birds and Candy Crush, you could give the next generation to be interested in Nintendo again.

Isn't it obvious that Falco Lombardi is actually a parrot?

@MadAussieBloke: honestly by this point I just wish your trolling and 'humour' was at least cohesive and well-thought-out so the rest of us could understand what these 'jokes' are meant to insinuate. You've gone from being "hey guys want to hear a joke? Wii U", to "why did the chicken cross the road? Because Nintendo". I worry for your sanity, I really do.

Stick to their fans and the family/kids market. PS, Xbox, and pc have the core market on kovk and aren't letting go.
