From the SNES to GameCube, there was Player's Choice. From the Wii to the Wii U, there was Nintendo Selects. Both of these were programs that usually took 60 dollar games, slapped a golden banner on them, and sold them for 20 dollars.
Why isn't there a program like this for Switch? Wouldn't it be great to bring in some more customers by selling games like Mario Odyssey and BOTW for 20 dollars? Even 30 would be a great deal.
What do you all think about the lack of a program like this for Switch?
Since the Switch is supposed to be in its "Halftime" i guess the Selects stuff will show up once its almost Time to say goodbye to the Switch, maybe in like 2-3 years?
Someday, somewhere in the Sky...
may we meet again.
@Mikmoomamimocki DS didn't get Selects and is also Nintendo's best selling system so given the Switch's momentum, I'd guess Switch doesn't get Selects at all.
@Mikmoomamimocki Yeah, I've been wondering if we're going to see Selects pricing for Switch games. If BOTW, Mario Odyssey get the Nintendo Selects pricing, I've got a feeling we won't see those $60 games dropped to $20. I've just got a feeling with the Switch generation. I'd like to be wrong. $20 would be amazing.
Even if they did do Selects, I doubt the really good games would get the treatment. They would do it for Kirby Star Allies, Yoshi Crafted or anything else that fits in the okay games category. What would be really cool is to have games like Astral Chain, Fire Emblem and Xenoblade on Selects to give them a bit of a boost since people probably aren't buying those titles anymore.
I kind of agree. If they do it, it'll probably be the early Switch games that aren't massively, unendingly successful. Star Allies, Xenoblade 2, Fire Emblem Warriors, Tropical Freeze.
I would actually consider buying Arms and Mario Tennis at 20-30 dollars.
In some cases, rather than getting the "Selects" treatment, Nintendo should reissue any games with DLC with all of the content on the cartridge. This would enable them to keep their current prices while being more appealing to those who may have been on the fence and even encourage others to double-dip (I know I would anyway!).
Such releases would include (but not limited to):
The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild
Luigi's Mansion 3
Captain Toad: Treasure Tracker
Super Smash Bros. Ultimate
Hyrule Warriors: Age of Calamity
Pokkén Tournament
Animal Crossing: New Horizons
Fire Emblem Warriors
Fire Emblem: Three Houses
Splatoon 2
Mario Kart 8 Deluxe (in late 2023)
Smash would probably require a price hike due to the collective cost of the DLC when sold individually (close to TWICE the cost of the base game itself for a tiny, tiny fraction of the base game's content), not to mention that with all software updates factored in, such a release would require a 32GB cartridge. Perhaps they could even in older Smash games on the cart as a bonus as there would still be plenty of room to spare (and the ROMs can be sold on the eShop as an "All Stars" bundle or the like so that others don't miss out).
BotW and Splatoon 2 were previously issued complete releases in Japan, however, the price for those releases were increased to reflect the cost of both the base game and the DLC had the latter been purchased separately. BotW also has English support on the cart while Splatoon 2 was sadly Japanese only.
Pokémon Sword/Shield were similarly issued complete releases (with the price jacked up to include the cost of the DLC), however, Pokémon games have (to date) never been included with any of Nintendo's "Selects" lines.
For other franchises, it would probably be more sensible to discount games from franchises with more than one entry on Switch (such as Kirby Star Allies, Zelda remakes/ports, Mario Tennis, Mario Golf, and the like), as well as any titles that have gone out of print.
Porygon did nothing wrong.

Black Friday is the unofficial Nintendo Selects program. Games like BoTW, Odyssey, and Luigi's Mansion 3 have all been reduced to $30 each in past Black Friday sales.
@TommyTendo except this isn’t the case for all Nintendo games on Switch.
Games like Star Allies, Yoshi’s Crafted World, Tropical Freeze and Arms would all clearly benefit greatly from a permanent lower price. They’re all shorter games from the first 18 months of the consoles life - they’re all high quality but I don’t get the impression that millions are lining up to buy them in 2022 but half the price and plenty of people will bite (& it makes the console instantly more attractive as a purchase for children).
