Topic: What game do you think the Switch will be remembered for, and why?

I feel like Breath of the Wild is the obvious answer here, but I'm curious as to what others think. This may be too easy of a question, though.

I don't think any console is remembered for a single specific game.

However I'd say the strongest candidates for Switch would be Breath of the Wild, Smash Bros Ultimate and maybe Animal Crossing New Horizons.

Others that come to mind are Super Mario Odyssey, Mario Kart 8 Deluxe, Splatoon 2, Fire Emblem Three Houses, Ring Fit Adventure, ARMS, Xenoblade Chronicles 2 and maybe one of the Pokemon games. But I'd argue that these are little less impactful either within their own series or on the industry as a whole.

@StarPoint
Animal Crossing New Horizons.
I have accumulated 705+ hours gameplay of ACNH this week. Still keep playing the game after got update 2.0.0.

No, you're wrong.
I have sold my BOTW last month due to not having any interest with the game anymore after i neglected the game for more than 4 years. Not everyone get into BOTW cause i have different interest in gaming.

Botw is probably it. Obviously some seriously great games aside from it, but it's the game everyone should get when getting a switch so based on that alone, that's why I feel that way.

BOTW
Smash
Animal crossing
Mario

I can really put anything

We don't stop playing because we grow old; we grow old because we stop playing.

I think it will be a mix of BOTW and Animal crossing, Smash to, but those to were one of the biggest switch games, on top of a million others but I think the Console will be remember'd as a whole, and just How it Fun its games are.

@Anti-Matter There not wrong, saying as its opinion based and were talking about What it will be remember'd for, an BOTW Will be, for it being such a step up, and different from any Zelda game, For its amazing world, I might be BOTW 2 actually now that I think about it. I'm not even a big fan of BOTW let alone finish it and I still think its up there. But, opinions.

@Snatcher
I don't even remember about BOTW.
The game didn't even click on me and thus i sold the game last month.
Different peoples have different perception.

There's many possibilities for this. BOTW, SMO and New Horizons will definitely be the first games on people's minds, based on the popularity and general reception of these games.

But I guess games like Sword/Shield and Smash Ultimate may also be associated with the switch.

Your first anything is important; a memory you don't want to forget. That's what makes nostalgia such a fascinating concept. That's why many people enjoy games that have aged well.

I do sometimes wonder if the Switch will be remembered for not a specific game, but for in general it’s limitations and the fact it didn’t really hold any of it’s titles back from being mega hits. While I know people have been saying this since basically the 360 generation, but I do think that consoles really have gone as far as they can really go, especially if there is some kind of “pro” refresh during the mid cycle. They have effectively caught up to the PC now, with only really the most high end out matching them and usually in fairly gimmicky ways. Now when PC cracks the 8K, 500 hz market as per standard, then consoles have room again but that doesn’t exist yet - and may never exist, for all we know.

This is why, if there is even a console generation after this one, what we might see from them is a reflection upon the Switch. And the fact that it didn’t need to have the best - or even necessarily competitive - hardware to succeed, because it offered a hybrid model the others didn’t. It filled a lot of niche markets, the others didn’t. And most importantly, Nintendo have a fiercely beloved collection of first party IP you can’t play anywhere else and so people embrace the Switch’s conventional limitations for the opportunities to play those titles.

I really do think Microsoft and Sony, should they wish to stay in the console space, will look back at the Switch as a case study to really help each of them carve out what exactly their niche is and how to double down and protect that, in a way that’ll keep their consumers coming back, even if they can’t offer perhaps the next big leap in hardware performance. That doesn’t mean I think suddenly the future is handhelds, but I just think the most memorable thing about the Switch is in a lot of ways it went against the conventional grain of what we believe a console needs to be competitive and thrived.

@Anti-Matter Yes, I said that? Didn't really click for me ether, I'm saying tho, that, that doesn't mean it wont be remember'd, and that they are wrong because of that, a lot of people, and I mean a lot of people love that game, making it an unpopular opinion to not so.

I'd say it's one of these three:

The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild
Super Smash Bros. Ultimate
Animal Crossing: New Horizons

All three of those games are million-sellers, for one thing. BotW since it came out on the same day as the Switch itself, and it was quite the revolutionary game if I do say so myself. It even outsold Super Mario Odyssey, shockingly enough! SMO was a massive hit when it came out and I do love that game, but I haven't seen as much people talk about it that much these days.

For SSBU, it totally felt it was the "ultimate" Smash Bros. game, as it has every playable character and most of the stages from the entire series. I remember playing that with my friends on campus too, on their own Switch consoles.

AC:NH came out at the perfect time, when the pandemic first hit. Just like New Leaf before it, it's a nice, chill game that goes at your own pace. This is the one Switch game I sunk the most time into, as well. It was even to the point that a lot of non-gamers got a Switch just for that game, IIRC. My mom even ended up getting a Switch of her own to play it.

The Wii U is already being remembered for BotW so just back off with that one

The Switch will be remembered for Mario Kart 8 Deluxe, obviously

I think the only answer, if there is one answer, is Animal Crossing. That game single-handedly got many people through the toughest year of their lives, and there are many people who bought a Switch just to play it and it might be the only game they ever play on it. Many may argue (myself included) that BotW is a better game, but nothing had as great an impact on the world in general and not just on people who frequent video game websites as Animal Crossing.

Breath Of The Wild. It’s the most innovative game Nintendo has released in ages and changed the franchise forever.

@StarPoint I would say the new Metroid prime game, if it is ever released LOL 😕

@Anti-Matter I don’t think it’s fair to just call me out as wrong when what I stated was purely an opinion. Obviously some people will think otherwise, and it was for that reason why I wanted to open this thread in the first place.

Just because you didn’t like a game doesn’t mean that it’s bad and unimportant. The impact that BOTW has made is undeniable.

@Ninfan I'm really hoping Prime 4 makes a splash. But the thing about BOTW and why I chose it is because it's so different and innovative. Not only for the Zelda series but for Nintendo as a whole. If Prime 4 is just more Prime, that's great. But I don't think it will quite reach the heights that BOTW did, regardless of how good it turns out. They would REALLY have to change up the Prime formula I think.

Can't believe some of the crap I've just read in here. 😂

Anyway...
It's Breath of the Wild for me too. Like it or hate it, the game speaks for itself.

To a lesser extent, Odyssey.
