@Whitewatermoose The whole point of what Western 3rd Party developers are doing is that they are playing the "wait and see" game. If the Switch is selling like hot cakes and the user base is continuously increasing, they will jump in and make "AAA" games for the console, regardless of power.

Every developer is saying that, but indirectly. Like "no current plan for Switch" is the most common one.

Making promise is easy. The hard part is keeping it.

TBH I was never expecting AAA titles like GTA, FF and whatnot. I think people got ahead with themselves with talk of home console power, easy to port etc.

I was expecting and hoping more along the lines of taking Vita's role of JRPGs like Persona, continuing 3DS series like Ace Attorney, Professor Layton, Monster Hunter etc with dash of the multiformat crowd pleasures like FIFA, WWE.

Yeahhh people really shouldn't get so bothered when obvious games aren't coming to the switch. Like ff15 or destiny 2. Don't expect prey or GTA6, or red dead redemption 2. Aside from money issues the switch just isnt the hardware for those AAA games.

One thing that would be cool to have that the switch could probably run would be ff14. Though they did just drop the PS3 version so maybe not

@Whitewatermoose They don't give every game a sequel but let's go with this anyhow.

Would I like more new IP? Yes. Want to know the problem? Even when they do that, it doesn't always work. Codename STEAM happened. Captain Rainbow happened. Wonderful 101, a third party new IP happened. Didn't fly off the shelves. Yet Splatoon worked.

So saying one or the other works isn't true. New IP pop fairly frequently, but it doesn't always sell.

And with regard to money going to third parties, pretty sure something happened to get digital exclusivity and special retail editions for PuyoPuyo, Ultra Street Fighter 2, Bomberman etc.

@BLP_Software Really hope Nintendo didn't pay for digital exclusivity and special retail editions for Puyo Puyo Tetris, that's not a game to brag about as its coming to the PS4 also and not going to be a big seller. Though it is funny reading the Vita fans get upset its not coming to their handheld.

@FragRed yeah its coming to PS4 but only in physical form and that's due to "license issues" whatever the hell that means. Just a theory.

And hey, the other manufacturers brag about exclusive crap all the time. Sony + marketing other companies DLC seems to go hand in hand and even Microsoft gets exclusivity at times. It's something Nintendo has managed to avoid doing up until now short of the times they've gone and full on published stuff.

@BLP_Software @FragRed Definitely not a theory. Ubisoft currently has the Tetris license for digital distribution. The contract only applied to "currently available consoles". That obviously doesn't apply to the Switch, so it gets the digital version of Puyo Puyo Tetris via loophole.

@BLP_Software That is true but when Microsoft and Sony market something as exclusive, it prevents anyone else from shouting about how it's on their system as well. With Puyo Puyo Tetris, it's been promoted by Sega as coming to both so I don't think Nintendo has any exclusive deals. Likely just Sega expecting it to sell better on the Switch than PS4.

However it is interesting to note that there's no 3DS version coming West, which is likely something Nintendo had a say in. I'm sure Sega would have wanted it on the 3DS due to the large install base.

I think the Switch success is definitely going to tell us a lot about Nintendo's place and also future in the market. I think the last gen has told us that they are struggling to support two systems by themselves (with minor 3rd party support) and that there isn't really strong demand for a Nintendo home console. Although it's also likely that poor marketing and a terrible gimmick contributed to the Wii U's demise, but the general trend (ignoring the Wii) is that the home consoles have generation upon generation sold less.

I think the unification strategy (which is essentially what the Switch is, regardless of what Nintendo tells you) is a sensible one as it should mean that Nintendo can focus all their resources on one console, theoretically translating to less shortages of continued software. As an aside, the Switch also has a great marketing feature which should help it sell. If you're a prior Nintendo owner then the hybrid strategy is likely one that should appeal to you.

The thing I think we are going to find out over the next two to three years is how many Nintendo fans are still out there that want a dedicated console to play Nintendo games. My belief is that there are not as many as Nintendo would like/think. I think that Zelda/Mario are attractive IPs but cater mostly to an audience that is dwindling and are unable to sustain a console by themself. Perhaps the unification strategy can help with that (e.g. Pokemon), but I think Nintendo really needs to focus on carving out some new killer IPs that will attract new people to the system. Splatoon is a good start on that but they need more.

Sounds like it's easy to develop for!

Which is always nice. 11 out of 10 elves that worked in every Wii U agree it's a weird machine.

The only thing I don't really like about the joycons that I know about is the IR sensor. I honestly can not see that having any use outside of the gimmicky sandwich eating game. I think they just got too excited packing so much stuff into the controllers that they forgot to ask, "when will this be useful for a game anyone makes?" If I have to stop playing a game so I can play Rock, Paper, Scissors with myself in order to continue, I will just be upset. It's made for party games to make shallow use of and that's it really.

I DO like the motion controls, however. Specifically because of how helpful they are with aiming. I hate aiming with an analogue stick, it's just so imprecise. The motion controls were just so great in Splatoon ind WWHD, so I'm glad they kept the feature. I think it's worth keeping, unlike the IR sensor.

I think the idea is that you could set the joy-con in front of the TV, and the camera could function like a Kinect. Somehow I don't think it's that good of a camera, but neither was the original Kinect honestly.

Got married.

Most of those concerns are pure speculation based on not actually having used the product. Not unlike how when I first heard about the iPhone I criticised it for lacking physical buttons for play/pause/skip. Something which in hindsight was clearly missing the point.

The only thing we have any real certainty about on your list of concerns is the battery life. We know that they're quoting an estimated battery life is ~3hours when playing something like Zelda BotW. But we also know how big the battery actually is. For comparison here's the battery capacity of a few other portable devices of varying price points compared to the Switch sorted from smallest to largest battery:

iPhone 7: 2000mAh
LG K10: 2300mAh
Google Pixel: 2700mAh
Galaxy S5: 2800mAh
iPhone 7+: 2900mAh
Google Pixel XL: 3400mAh
Samsung Tab A 7": 4000mAh
Nintendo Switch: 4300mAh
iPad Mini 4: 5100mAh
Samsung Tab A 10": 7300mAh
iPad Pro: 10300mAh

Whether you like the battery life or not, the battery capacity itself is pretty decent for a 6" device.

Remember when people were getting all upset at this thing:

Untitled

Saying that Nintendo were in the wrong for not silencing the rumour, and how letting such spoofs pass without comment would tarnish the console's reputation come launch, and put off loads of potential buyers who were fixed on the idea the system would be Hey Arnold's face with a touch screen?

Well, does anyone still think that fake leak is now proving more influential than the actual Switch and all the marketing it has behind it?

Oh, and remember when people tried to go all Sherlock Homes on the reflections of the trees to try and pin it does to a particular Scandinavian games company building? Good times...

I certainly remember a few people believing it and pre emptively praising Nintendo for such a unique and innovate console design, saying how developers could "create whatever buttons they need" or how the hud could be easily customizable around the stick things.

It was ridiculous

I would argue that the sort of games that would drain the battery aren't the sort of games you're playing away from mains power. If you're waiting for a train or something you're not going to be playing Zelda for hours on end. More likely you'll play a few rounds of Smash Bros against random AI opponents for 15mins or so. Or boot up a VC release like Super Mario World or something.

And even then it's not like you can't get battery packs. For far less than the price of a game you can effectively triple the battery life with a battery pack. If 3 hours of an intense game wasn't enough? Well maybe 9 hours will be. And if 9 hours isn't enough then... well I don't know what you're doing for it to not be enough....

I remember saying that it was the dumbest design and couldn't possibly be real. I also said that it would be pretty easy to 3D print something like that and stick a bit of perspex on the top.

Perfect Solution For Long Term Portable Play

Untitledfree screenshot software

Untitledimage hosting no sign up

Untitledadult photo sharing

1 Switch case with a little bit of depth to the pocket (make sure it has a pocket too) like the Sheika case included with the Zelda BotW Special/Collector Editions

2 Nyko Power Pack retractable 2.4A AC Adapter and removable USB to USB-C cable

3 IOGEAR Gearpower 10,000mAh Portable Battery charger with (here's the important part) USB-C input/output and 2.4A USB output

Resulting Solution
Put those 3 items- the compact, retractable AC adapter, the accompanying USB to USB-C cable and the ultra small 10,000mAh portable battery (5.4" x 2.5" x 0.8") inside mesh pocket of case along with Switch.

  • If you need to charge Switch from wall outlet, plug AC adapter into wall, plug USB end of cord into AC adapter, plug USB-C end of cord into Switch. Runs 2.4A as an official 3rd party accessory (so voltage and cord are appropriate for the Switch)
  • If you need to charge Switch and there is no wall outlet nearby, plug USB end of cord into 2.4A USB output port of portable battery, plug USB-C end of cord into Switch... the 5V 2.4A output of the battery charger, along with the same cord included with the Nyko AC adapter, will ensure voltage matches that of the Nyko AC adapter
  • If you need to charge portable battery from wall outlet, plug AC adapter into wall, plug USB end of cord into AC adapter, plug USB-C end of cord into the USB-C input/output port of portable battery

All your portable charging needs covered with a mere 3 items, all of them small , retractable, compact and able to fit in most Switch carry cases together. A single retractable-prong AC adapter, a single USB to USB-C cable, a single portable battery smaller than many phones
