You know how people seem to be doing this thing where they add up the cost of all the stuff you "need" with the Switch? Then they compare it to the cost of a standard PS4 out of the box. Well here's what would be a fair comparison (Australian prices because I can't be bothered looking up US prices):
"What you need" for the Switch:
$469 - Switch Console
$129 - Switch Dock (for second TV)
$99 - Pro Controller
$119 - Second Joycon Set
$19 - Charge grip
$49 - Switch LAN Adapter Total: $884AU
How much the equivalent for the PS4 would cost:
$419 - PS4
$419 - PS4 (for second TV)
$198 - PSVita (for portable mode-ish)
$88 - Dualshock 4
$88 - Dualshock 4 (you need two extra otherwise you don't get 4 players) Total: $1212AU
Is that Sony equivalent setup insane? Well yes, yes it is. But that's the only way to get the same functionality that people are saying they "need" for the Switch. That should be the cost comparison people use if they're going to bulk up the Switch price by adding all the accessories

Apples-to-apples. The Switch doesn't offer 4K so there's no reason to be unfair to the PS4 "equivalent" setup by demanding it do 4K. But in order to have a mobile, dual-TV, full multiplayer experience that people say is required for the Switch? That's how much you'd have to spend on Sony gear.

@skywake So you're getting 2TB of storage with that PS4 set-up, how much storage does the Switch come with again? I appreciate your comparisons, but you can't compare them like this, you know that too.
With online play being added to NES and SNES games,I wonder if they'll do the same with N64 and Gamecube VC?It would certainly go some way to justifying a subscription and giving VC the refresh it needs. You will get your free NES or SNES game for a month and a decent discount on 64 and Gamecube VC on top.
An example month of the service
Week 1: Free for 1 month - Blades of Steel or Super Mario Kart with added online and mini tournaments run over the month.
Week 2: Waverace 64 with online play added to VC with a 30% discount for subscribers. Also available to purchase for non subscribers but with online modes disabled.
Week 3: Super Smash Bros Melee added to VC with same perks as WR64.
Week 4: Pilotwings 64 with same perks.
Then the next month the free NES and SNES games are available for purchase at a discounted rate for subscribers.
There's so many games that could be given a new lease of life with online modes added.I'm not sure how much work it takes to add online modes into old games but maybe they've had a separate team working on it for ages.Possibly DNA?

Well 1TB split across two systems with mandatory game installs. But that's beside the point. What I was highlighting was the stupidity of the claim that the Switch costs "a lot more" because of the accessories. Like a second dock so it's a little bit easier to move between TVs and extra controllers for multiplayers.
The fact is that the Switch gives you more options out of the box than any other console on the market. Whether people like the way they're doing it or not. You get a home console, portable console and two controllers.

At the cost of power and storage. That's just a fair trade-off, doesn't mean it's more valuable though.
@Octane
Sure but I wasn't talking about a comparison of value. I was having a go at the people who say that the Switch cost has to include all the accessories. Really, if someone is going to argue that the Switch requires a second dock, Pro Controller, second set of Joycons and so on? Well, its competitors also get pretty expensive if you demand all of those extra features.
It was an absurd comparison by design.

The minimum / barrier of entrance is quite low. You don't need that pro controller. (Definitely not getting that.) Maybe extra joycons, yet even those are optional. You don't need that sd card to be huge.
You may want it, but you don't need it to enjoy the system greatly.

I have the same mind set now, i'll not gonna get:
Charging grip: joy-cons have 20h battery life so when i'll end a game session i'll put them on the dock with the Switch to charge them
Pro controller: i first wanna try the joy-cons on the normal grip that is given with the system. No need for a second controller too since joy-cons are enough for me and my brother for multiplayer
SD card: i'll download only digital-only games, so no need for that too
I think that the system pack will be enough for a long time to me, maybe for the entire system life, and that's another really good point for the Switch to me
People that mention the lack of storage space do not understand why the XBONE and PS4 need so much, optical media, the switch has solid state so no need to install so much to cut lag.
Switch games list,
Legend of Zelda BotW, Human resource machine, NBA Playgrounds, Street Fighter 2, Super Bomberman R, Snipperclips, Overcooked, World of Goo.
For me the Pro controller is a necessity because of the lack of D-pad on the Joy-cons.It's a must for Sonic Mania and USF 2 but even playing Bomberman or Puyo Puyo Tetris without a D-pad will be a nightmare. If you're playing any of those online with the Joy-cons against an opponent using the Pro controller you're at a definite disadvantage.

Pretty much. I think I'll probably get a Pro Controller eventually and the same deal with SD card expansion. But beyond that? I don't think I need anything else. And I won't be getting anything else on day 1 other than a case.

@mav-i-am but if your expecting modern AAA games to be ported to switch then you still need space for patches. 32 gig minus those used by the system wont be enough for the patches alone.
There's a rumour that suggests the game this community is most looking forward to is a launch title, yes I'm talking about none other than Snipperclips!
That would make me (and so many others I'm sure) so happy.
Obviously BoTw is the one, but something to play with the misses would be cool .
And this looks soooooo charming! @Grumblevolcano
@Grumblevolcano That's funny,I left a comment in the most recent article about 5 minutes before you posted that tweet saying i'll be downloading Snipperclips along with Zelda day one. Then I went out on my bike and it came to me that Snipperclips wasn't confirmed for launch,i thought I better edit my post when I get back home. Now I don't need to.
I'm not sure if this has been posted on here before, but I thought this video was really interesting in showing just how Nintendo has changed their image over the past 30 years in developing and advertising their consoles. It shows the trailers promoting their newest hardware through generations. When you look at the Nintendo Switch trailer, it does feel so very different to anything they did before. More so than I realised at the time.

@skywake Well, yeah, of course it's not necessary, it comes as a functional out of the box. I do however understand when people say they want to get a Pro Controller (D-pad) for example, and I can also understand that getting a Pro Controller means more than getting another DS4. The same for an SD card. I think there's a greater necessity in getting an SD card for the Switch than getting a HDD for the PS4 or Xbox One. Let's just say that when I bought my PS4, I didn't buy any accessories, and I don't think I ever will. However, when I'm getting the Switch, a (small) SD card will probably be required at some point and I do think I want to get a Pro Controller for the D-pad alone.
I even considered getting a second dock, but for $90 I think I'll pass...
