To anyone who's played the Switch using the joy-cons: How so they compare to the 'Wii Remote on its side' setup that was supported in several Wii and Wii U games?

On the surface, it probably seems like a stupid question; they're completely different shapes and sizes, and the joy-cons have analogue sticks and shoulder buttons etc. But it struck me that that was the last time Nintendo made a controller which was useable in two orientations, and I found horizontal mode quite uncomfortable.

Does the Switch pull off the vertical/horizontal tying without either feeling compromised?

@Grumblevolcano depends who you preordered with. As long as they are a reputable firm you shouldn't have an issue. When I worked in retail we used to keep a few units back for day one walk ins. As terrible as it sounds we would then bundle them up with games and accessories just to build the margin.

Just read on the express.co.uk site that switch preorders are already ahead of PS4 day one sales in some territories. The big question is whether Nintendo have the stock to satisfy the demand? Probably not, but I have mine secured so alls good.

Territories would suggest more than 1. I only heard of 1 country yesterday and that was Sweden(and that's 1 retailer within the country). And lo and behold, I read that article and Sweden is the only country where it is reportedly true. Sensationalist headline from a gutter newspaper.

"Are Nintendo Switch pre orders really smashing PS4 launch day sales?"

And they didn't give anything approaching a conclusive answer.

@FGPackers If true, I think that mod support on the Switch is a pretty big deal.

@Maxz The Joy-cons a way more comfortable than Wii remote on its side, especially if you use the wrist strap attachment. As you say the joy con has an analogue stick, shoulder buttons and 4 face buttons. It also has rounded corners, is flatter (i.e. control pad shaped not box shaped) and is about a quarter of the weight.

There are two disadvantages to the joy-cons. The big one is the lack of a d-pad. The second is that without the wrist strap attachment the shoulder buttons are indented, so you have to get your fingers at exactly the right angle to use them nicely.

@chardir Groovy. Feedback on them seems really quite positive, which is impressive given the balancing act they're attempting of functioning as half a controller in one orientation and a full controller in the other.

In other news, game prices seem to be dribbling down towards something more reasonable in the UK. Zelda has dropped from the disturbing £60 to below the £50 mark on Amazon (currently £48), and I'm hoping that's the start of a trend, seeing as the game prices were one of the most offputting features to what seems to be a conceptually rock-solid and well-constructed console.

I can stomach a slightly chunky initial investment, but knowing that every game would be 50% more expensive than what I've regarded as
the 'standard' of £40 for a home console title was a bit of a stinger.

I think there's a chance of a mild price drop come next Christmas (or at least some temporary discounts) to act as an extra incentive to shift consoles, along with Mario and whatever else E3 reveals. In which case I'm basically paying a portable Zelda tax. But a portable Zelda is really seeming worth it at the moment. There's only so much time I can spend hogging the TV, and Zelda seems like it's going to need a fair bit of time invested in it.

@Whitewatermoose Yeah I know, but it's still better than no support at all, which I expected to be honest.

@Maxz What you're experiencing is nothing new. Retailers have begun listing video game products at their RRP - sometimes higher, if they're placeholders - for years and years. Eventually however, these retailers begin undercutting themselves and the prices drop to more reasonable levels.

I remember in the late 90's, Donkey Kong 64 was released for the N64 at an RRP of £60. Granted it included the Expansion Pack, but shortly after the release you could pick it up for £49.99.

@Octane @Whitewatermoose I can't care less about mods, all i wanted to know is Special Edition instead of Original one. With this i'll surely grab it, i only don't know when

@FGPackers SE as in the remastered version from last year? Yeah, it is.

I do hope Rocket League comes eventually.I've only played it briefly on my nephews XBone and was useless at it but I know it's a game I would get right into.Considering the Switch's set up and the games popularity,Nintendo really should have tried to get it on the Eshop for launch.By the sounds of it,we won't be seeing it any time soon,if at all.

5 Reasons Why I'm Excited About The Nintendo Switch

The Nintendo Switch looks awesome.

I know I’ve raised my concerns with the video game console in the past, but on the whole I’m more upbeat than I am worried. I have no way of knowing whether the Switch will be a commercial success, but I have a feeling it’s going to be a blast and that it’s going to be very good for the video game industry.

Here’s why I’m excited about the Nintendo Switch. You can watch the video version or skip below and read the list.

1. I can play all my favorite Nintendo games at home or on the go.

It’s the perfect console for my line of work, for one thing. If I’m reviewing the new Zelda, I can play it at home, at the office, or on a trip. That’s incredibly convenient for what I do, but it’s sure to appeal to lots of other people, too. Whether it’s enough of a draw to make the Switch a huge hit remains to be seen, but I’m looking forward to it.

2. Game cartridges!

Cartridges make way more sense for a portable console than disc-based media. They’re fast, durable, and you don’t have to install the games onto the system itself—which is a good thing since it’s only got 32 gigs of storage space. Besides, these aren’t like old-school NES cartridges. You won’t have to blow on them to make them work.

3. The Joy-Con controllers.

Everything I’ve seen and read about the new Joy-Con controllers makes me excited to actually play with them. As my colleague Ollie Barder argues—he’s tried the Switch out already—they might be the Switch’s true secret weapon.

4. It’s something different from the PS4 and Xbox One.

As much as I like to get on Nintendo’s case for putting out console after console that relies on a central gimmick, I’m still glad the Switch isn’t just another PS4 or Xbox One. It’s unique and, if all goes well, that means we’ll get lots of fun, quirky games that aren’t just rehashes of the games we play on Sony or Microsoft systems.

5. The games!

Speaking of games, this is the number one reason I’m excited for the Switch. The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild is enough to set my hype to 11, but there’s also Splatoon 2, Super Mario Kart 8 Deluxe, Super Mario Odyssey and who knows what else in the pipeline. I’m hoping for a new Metroid.

I see people on LameFAQs saying how they are going to be taking Launch Day off work to play the Switch.

LOL - Not sure if I'll take the whole day off but I'll def be playing Breath of the Wild on my Wii U, in my living room, with an extra $300 literally resting in my jeans pocket. :3

Double Fine has no current plans for Psychonauts 2 on Switch, but may happen “later on”

Earlier this month, Double Fine tweeted out interest in bringing Psychonauts 2 to Switch. The company said that it hopes to “hit up as many platforms as we can with that one”.

That was followed up with another tweet a couple of days later. Double Fine clarified that there are “no existing plans for a Switch version, but it is possible we might later on”.

Was Mariobro4. No, I'm not taking off my backpack...it's important.
