From an article about a Famitsu interview with NIS.
:

Aside from that, Disgaea 5 was originally exclusive to PlayStation 4 and you can play it with Vita using Remote Play, but it wasn’t really a game for a portable device. However, NIS received many requests to port it to Vita. But if there was a Vita port, it would be necessary to downgrade the game. Since there has been high demand for Disgaea 5 to be on portable device, porting it to Switch would be a way of satisfying Nippon Ichi’s customers and fulfilling their demands.

Famitsu further questioned whether porting to Switch went smoothly. He reconfirmed that this was the case. There weren’t any issues with the hardware, and no downgrades were made.

When asked if NIS will make more games for Switch, Niikawa responded with a solid yes. The company won’t just make a game for launch and call it quits. Niikawa asks gamers to look forward to an announcement in the future.

Odds a game like Civ Rev 2 makes its way to the Switch? I have never played the robust games on PC, but loved playing that back in the day on 360. Seems like the perfect game in handheld mode!

Who exactly is the target audience for the Switch? The games lineup doesn't seem to be designed around casual, family gaming like the Wii and Wii U, the system lacks popular/hardcore third-party titles to attract the PC/XB1/PS4 crowd, and Nintendo hasn't pushed the "portable" aspect of the console in their marketing for gamers who like to play on the go.

@LegendOfPokemon, Nintendo's been confused about target markets for a while, hasn't it? Ever since the Wii, which actually did a very good job of targeting a specific market, they've kept trying to take on too many.

My hope is that the Switch is actually much better suited to take on many demographics than the Wii U was. It's a pretty cheap hybrid console when taken out of the mid-generation release context, if you're not buying any accessories. And it sounds like it's at least powerful enough for 3rd parties to consider it. If its true that we don't know the full story of the Switch's release schedule this year, and the Switch actually does get more of the popular multiplatform games, I see nothing getting in the way of its success.

That's all positive thinking, though. And desperate hope. I want nothing more than for Nintendo to succeed and keep making new games and interesting hardware, so please Nintendo! Don't fish up!

I made about $150 selling 8 of my old games; I'm also going to put up a 3DS XL for sale.

@LegendOfPokemon
I think it's aimed at Wii U owners, who obviously will be the first group of gamers looking for that next console Nintendo fix. And as a hybrid, it's also aimed at 3DS owners. Play Nintendo games portable, but with much nicer graphics and better hardware. And of course Vita owners. Switch may finally put the Vita to rest in Japan.

If they can convince those 3 demographics to buy, they will have a healthy user base going forward large enough for games to sell well enough to get decent support. Toss in core gamers of the other two consoles and PC who are simply looking for a secondary console to supplement their gaming diet, and the wild card being a few casuals who just think it's a cool device and has some Nintendo games they recognize. Or maybe not casual casuals but people who aren't core gamers but have owned a system in the past and just see the Zelda or Skyrim and like the idea of playing it anywhere. Idk, I think it's well-positioned to appeal to pretty much everyone to at least some degree. It's up to Nintendo to crank it up a notch (or 10 notches) to make the system as appealing as possible to all these different groups.

They're targeting a group of people that haven't really been on the one platform before. The audience its targeting is a bit Wii U, a bit Vita, a bit 3DS and a bit mobile. Before now we've thought of these groups as entirely separate. The Switch is trying to bring them all under the same roof.

It's kinda like the disruptive nature of devices Apple used to make. Which consumer was the iPad targeting? Now it's obvious that it was just about everyone but at the time the audience was split. Was it replacing the TV, laptop, smartphone or portable games console? Was it a coffee table device, travel device or work device? And in the end it was all of those things, some of them or none of them depending on who you asked...

@Whitewatermoose I very much agree. As Reggie has said, Nintendo has been focusing on games for the Switch, and I am optimistic for E3 this year.

@Nicolai I sold a few of my games and got Splatoon for less than a dollar.

@JaxonH @skywake I do think the Switch will be successful if it attracts the demographics you mention, as long as it is advertised (because we all know how good Nintendo is at advertising)!

Good news for Australians (less of a big deal now with the region free stuff, but still)
http://www.classification.gov.au/News/Pages/2017-news/13Jan20...

The Australian classification board are going to keep using IARC. If you don't know what that is:

The International Age Rating Coalition (IARC) is a partnership of leading computer game ratings
authorities from 36 countries across the world, including the United States, Canada, most of
Europe and Brazil. In Australia, the IARC tool will be classifying computer games, in the form of
a mobile app and online computer games.
Here’s how the IARC tool works: a computer game developer answers an online questionnaire
about the content of the game, the IARC tool then generates an Australian rating and
consumer advice for that particular game.

Basically it means less waiting around for games to be classified for release in Australia. Which means less indie devs are going to skip an Australian release and less waiting for indie releases in general.

I'm not saying the Switch is a poor machine; it seems to be an amazing console. And in this case I'm not arguing about the price (though I do think the cost should be lower for both the console and accessories to really drive adoption). In this case, what I'm saying is that if Nintendo could market the Switch as "the most powerful handheld ever made, and the most versatile home console ever made, all in one device, for only $299," that could be far more appealing, and also tell people that this isn't just a GameCube/Wii/Wii U (or simply a Nintendo home console) that can be played anywhere on the go, but a GameCube/Wii/Wii U PLUS a Game Boy/DS/3DS (or simply a Nintendo handheld system) all in one device for just $299. That I feel could really attract the average person into buying a Switch.

@smm1

The issue with that is that handhelds are traditionally associated with lower budget games and short play experiences. There is an expectation of lower cost, and they are more considered to compete with mobile devices than home consoles.

To make matters worse, it would really muck up the messaging about the Joy-Con's unique features, as those aren't really applicable when they are attached to the Switch body.

The FCC filing for the Pro Controller just went through. That explains why preorders for it haven't been available in the US.

@DJaa Unfortunately the average Joe doesn't care about Zelda and (3D) Mario, or rather, they may not even be aware of the games. I think that Mario Kart has a better chance of convincing that crowd into buying a Switch.

I think what proves the most that people on the internet make an incredibly small portion of Nintendo switch' potention succes is Pokemon sun and moon sales.

Even before those games came out, the news/rumour was already out there that pokemon STARS was coming out for switch, yet not only didnt the games suffer from it, but they also had their biggest launch in franchise history in (at least in the west). I am one of the people who skipped sun and moon for that reason btw.

What does this say? It says that most people don't know or even care about the details we argue about each day. All they'll see is an attractive product and attractive software. None of the things we read will make the switch suffer as long nintendo blows it out with strong marketing. Really the latter is all the switch needs in contrast to wii u which was simply a lost cause. Lastly I also won't get a switch on day one and I could be a minority in this as well, but we'll see.

Ah, interesting. I'm still going to hold off on one, though. I'm going to wait and see if I find the Joycons on the grip as comfortable as everyone is saying. So, really, my Switch expenses are just the console and Zelda. Least expensive console launch for me probably ever.

Did you see the Nintendo store webpage in Japan crashed? It seems they have demand for the console there, at least more than the Wii U had.

I remember reading that for this year, the company that manufactures the Switch's screen expects an order of 10 million screens, which speaks that they do think it will sell far better than the Wii U, and the response in Japan seems to give them assurance (at least there).

Amazon Japan's preorders were over in 15 minutes. What reason, apart from preordering the Switch, would they have to go into NoJ's web to the point of crashing it?

It's a new website (it only launched yesterday) so I wouldn't be surprised if it wasn't just put together poorly, like how My Nintendo doesn't work with the 3DS or Wii U.
