@-Green-
They are a bit more - about 10 bucks more. But nothing astronomical like people are making them out to be. If I want to buy a plain ol' wireless Xbox One controller right now, it's gonna run me $59.99 in the States. The Elite controller is $149.99. The PS4 controller is pretty much the same - $59.99 at most retailers.
The Switch Pro controller is $69.99 - it's 10 bucks more, but it's also for a brand-new system. I'm not saying that justifies it, but I'm kind of sick of people expecting a brand-new system to cost less in every regard than existing tech. The Joycons are small, yes, and so that's why their price tags raise eyebrows. But there's a lot of tech in those things, and you get what you pay for.
I'd rather pay a bit more for something that could last me the life of my system rather than pay less for something I'd have to replace 2 or 3 times during my system's life.
@Azooooz
To be fair the Joycons are kinda like WiiMotes. The only thing they've added is NFC everything else is just enhanced versions of stuff that was already there. If any controller on the Switch has changed dramatically it's the Pro controller. Because that thing has far more stuff crammed into it than the Wii U Pro controller had.
@rallydefault
The Switch Pro controller pricing isn't bad when you consider what it has. From what I can tell it has everything the Joycons have including the HD rumble and NFC. No idea if it has the distance sensor/IR camera but I wouldn't be surprised if it did. And despite that it still ends up being about the same price as its competitors so I think it's priced pretty well.

@skywake Yeah, I feel that for the most part Switch's price problems are because of expectations set in past gens not the thought of expensive when looking at what it actually is.
Even with paid online, the major uproar on that is solely because Wii, DS, Wii U and 3DS online was always free when available. If this paid online service actually massively improves the online infrastructure (e.g. such that Smash online isn't a lagfest when doing anything rather than just 1v1 For Glory rules), adds meaningful discounts, bonuses and free stuff then what's wrong with paid?
@Spanjard
Don't worry, I'm not. From the commentary I've read I think I was the very few people who was super excited when they showed the ice cube thing. But me thinking it's cool is kinda beside the point. I still think the Joycon is basically a more advanced WiiMote.
I think of it like this. If you took the standard original WiiMote and added gyros it's still a WiiMote. They did this, they called it the Wii Motion Plus. It was still a WiiMote. If you then take that same thing and add HD Rumble? I'd still call that a WiiMote. If you added distance sensing to the IR camera? Still a WiiMote. What about an NFC attachment? What if you made it smaller and clipped it to the side of a tablet screen? When did it become a Joycon rather than a WiiMote?
They've got different branding for sure but at the end of the day? The Joycons are WiiMotes. They're advanced in every way and they've got NFC now. But they're essentially WiiMotes. Right down to the wrist strap.

@skywake
I think the problem is that "Wiimote" has become a be-all, encompassing term for nearly any motion controller. Even those PlayStation wand things have been jokingly/lovingly referred to as "Wiimotes with lights" (or something a bit more crude in language lol).
So, when anything comes along that is roughly rectangular in shape, is on the smaller side, has motion/pointing control, and a wrist strap (however optional), a lot of people are going to point and say "Wiimote!" simply because of the popularity of the original item.
@skywake: I'm excited about the HD rumble, even though I acknowledge that the part when they were showing it off was really awkward.
And I completely agree with you, which is why it makes sense that a pair of these is exactly twice the price of a Wii motion plus when it was new.
If these Joy-cons feel new, It's mostly because they're now portable along with the console, and allow people to play two player without the hassle of carrying them separately. But they're still motion-based controllers with minimal buttons and a variety of ways to hold it. In their defense, they look a lot different.
Nintendo can call things whatever they want, though. The Wii stopped being the Gamecube with the motion controls, despite having much of the same stuff within it. The Wii U ends up being completely different from the Wii, yet they call THAT the same thing. At the end of the day, just take things the way they are, and decide whether its worth buying.
@rallydefault
I don't see what the problem is TBH. It's like how people are saying the Pro Controller is basically a 360 controller. It's clearly doing a lot more but does it matter? The end result is kinda similar. And in the case of the 360 it wasn't even the first to land on that sort of controller.
At least with the Joycon it's a controller shaped like an NES controller on its end with motion sensors, IR camera and no camera tracking. I'd argue it's the closest thing anyone has made to the WiiMote since the WiiMote. If people want to say that they're basically WiiMotes? There's no arguments from me. I tend to agree with them.
@Nicolai
I think most of what makes the Joycons interesting is that they can attach to the Switch. Which is more a great feature of the Switch than the Joycons. If the Switch wasn't a portable device there'd be no reason to attach them. It'd probably also be bundled with the Pro controller and nobody would really care about the system much at all. I guess what I'm saying is that it's a good thing it is the way it is.
@Spanjard Played a few things too. Everything runs really well, joycons and especially the Pro Controller feel absolutely amazing.
Its won me over. While I think £250 was the hot spot, that extra £30 is worth it. My only concern is in tabelop mode the screen isnt huge BUT thats also foing to vary on where it is. Tables on trains etc.

@BLP_Software I've seen you go from disappointed, to excited, to disappointed to pleased several times over again during the last two day or so. But you're saying that it feels good? That's good to hear. Is it heavy at all?
@Farmboy74 At first I though this was something to do with VC and was super excited. I'm not sure how good these arcade ports are and never heard of the people who are doing them either. Will need to do some research.

@Octane yeah i was excited pre-presser then down after. Mulled it over, looks good. Down a bit during the hands on and i think im settled on while price is a little high the games are going to be steady and its a unique device. Probably why iwas so down, we havent really got a point of comparison to Switch in such a dedicated form.
Weight wise? Joycons just sit in your hand. Pro-controller is really damn comfortable, thankfully not too heavy despite all thats inside.
As for the console itself? I cant really say. Didnt pick up the Switch itself but looking at the size and all that technical wizadry fitting stuff in id have to guess about 3ds xl? It looks more compact than an XL with the joycons off.
The hands on ws very controlled though.

@skywake Yea, I don't see anything necessarily "wrong" with calling them Wiimotes. Maybe it irks some people who will always have negative feelings about the Wii brand, though? Especially after Nintendo went to lengths to say the NX was going to be something entirely separate from that brand.
But yea, people will call them whatever they want to call them. Can't fight it lol
@Spanjard As I said above i wasnt sure what to make of it, especially seeing its size in front of me before trying a game, but seeing the screen, games in action, controllers in my hands...yeah itll be a fine bit of kit. Price is my only hang up and thats really a minor thing for me.
I guess i let my anxiety get the better of me. Dont do well in crowds but i went anyway XD Had to try this beast out to really get a feel.
