@Grumblevolcano
To be fair that 3min trailer was more than what most consumers saw of the Wii U before launch. And there's certainly more clarity about what the Switch is than there was with the Wii U. IMO we're ahead of where we were at this stage with the Wii U.

I agree, the Wii U's biggest fail was the lack of clarity and USP. They need to hammer home exactly what the Switch is, is capable of and the games that will be coming to it. They just relied on the success of the Wii for the U and it wasn't enough and Nintendo never quite know how to convey their products which means they need to get this bang on.
@Shinion
Geez, man - somebody have an axe to grind? lol That was one bitter, condescending post.
Anyway, I agree that Nintendo needs to have some awesome game announcements in January, but I think they should hold Zelda for a couple months until E3. Launch the Switch with the 3D Mario, a bunch of big Wii U remasters, and lots of 3rd-party stuff. IF the 3D Mario is excellent, and just because it's a new machine, numbers and sell-through will probably be "fine" for April/May regardless.
"Saving" Zelda until the summer is brilliant to refresh the excitement after the first few months go away, and a great bridge until the games season of the fall/winter.
@rallydefault Really? Me pointing out the bizarre/unrealistic/laughable/OTT demands and expectations around this thing is me having an axe to grind? And bitter, really? How many times does someone who genuinely wants to try to keep things calm and rational here so people don't end up annoyed or disappointed equate to me being "bitter"?
It really, really should be mandatory to at least quote people when you want to accuse them of something.
It's become an embarrassing meme at this point how regularly people not only expect but actually want Nintendo to fail so much so that there seems to be a preemptive anticipation of such a thing happening, and inversely the other side that think that anything/everything Nintendo releases will be a game changer. My intent is to try to make sure people aren't continuing to perpetuate that meme, hence my post.
Let's just all assume at this point that there is at least a chance that the Switch will not fail, nor set the world on fire, until there's overwhelming reason to think otherwise. In other words, stop with the "irrelevant", "doomed", "danger zone" nonsense.
Stay rational. Pleeeeease?
That's all I would like for the next month. Honestly. But if people can't help themselves with that hyperbolic rhetoric I reserve the right to not take them as seriously as I would more rational people, that's fair ain't it?
@rallydefault Really? Me pointing out the bizarre/unrealistic/laughable/OTT demands and expectations around this thing is me having an axe to grind?
Yes. If you're going to call people'e opinions "unrealistic demands" and "laughable expectations," you're well on your way to appearing affronting and bitter.
@Nicolai but you're generalising if you're narrowing it down to me having a problem with "people's opinions". I don't know what else I can do to make my point crystal clear but I genuinely, genuinely want people to be happy when they go to bed on January 13th after seeing that event, and I don't think that people having unrealistic (and yes expecting Nintendo to have new iterations in all their main franchises released in the first year is unrealistic and I'm sorry not sorry if you have a problem with me pointing that out) expectations will help that at all.
Look at the last few years, No Man's Sky, Titanfall (IGN believe the hype), Watch Dogs and more, people hyped those games to hell and back and in particular with the former it just turned into a mess of death threats, accusations and nonsense. People questioning the game and trying to be calm were laughed out of threads the internet over because there's no way it was all smoke and mirrors.
That's what I want to avoid here. Let's not have a situation were Nintendo don't show off a brand new 'AAA' Metroid/F-Zero/Fire Emblem and have this event turn into yet another embarrassing hype machine gone wrong.
Ditch the hype, ditch the hyperbole and give things a flipping chance before you start talking about "danger zones".
I mean Arceus weeps is THAT now controversial? Being rational, and not buying into the hype/hyperbole machine?
@Shinion: In my opinion, it wasn't the content that made you appear angry, it was the way you said it. That's why I brought up the words.
But, If you don't mind me getting completely removed from that topic for a moment, I personally don't mind getting super-hyped about something like this, because I'll still be happy if only half of my expectations are met. I do have memories of disappointed fans during Nintendo events that I enjoyed, often salty about some Zelda reveal that was already confirmed to not happen, or something
@FragRed@Grumblevolcano "If there's not enough announcements in January, the other 2 consoles will make Switch irrelevant just like XB1/PS4 did for Wii U."
I don't think that's true.
The Wii U had no one to save it. The Switch, on the other hand, has 70 million Nintendo gamers to keep it relevant regardless of whether a single PS4/X1 gamer decides to buy it or not. As I said above, both Wii U and 3DS gamers will be funneled into the Switch user base, because at $250 it will cost no more than a 3DS did at launch, and let's face it- this thing offers more than a Wii U and 3DS combined. Heck, at $250 it'll be only $50 more than an XL is today, and you won't need to buy a charger separately.
That is why the other two consoles will have a very hard time doing anything to Switch. Because the other two consoles aren't portable. The other two consoles didn't stop the 3DS (which didn't really even start picking up momentum until after the announcement of PS4/X1), and I don't think they'll do much to Switch either. Too big a portable gaming market, and those consumers who want to play on the go aren't just going to just vanish into thin air.
Add to that the reality that as a hybrid, its got twice the appeal as a normal console. For $250 it's going to take complete abandonment of the system to disinterest people. It doesn't need to come out the gate with 1000 games to get people's interest... it just needs one. One game is all it takes to get most people to buy a system- that's certainly true as far as existing PS4/X1 gamers. Which is probably why I hear a lot of people saying they're going to buy one. They like the new Zelda and that's all the reason they need. I imagine once Mario is shown, it will have a similar effect.
That's not to discount the value of other games- it does need other games and I'm confident it will get plenty. But day one, having one or two system selling games is far more important than just trying to announce as many as possible. E3 is not that far away past March. And the system will probably be sold out until May (if not longer) anyways just from the launch rush. By the time the system is actually available for others to buy, it's basically be e3 at which time they can come hard.

@Shinion
Dude, bottom line is you're being pretty darn derogatory toward people you haven't even met. That in itself is pretty off-putting.
If you read my post directed at you, I made zero judgments about YOU. I only judged your post. BIG difference. Well... actually, I did say you seem like you have an axe to grind, so I guess I did judge you. My bad. At any rate, I stand by that lol
Also, there are plenty of people on this site and elsewhere who are very realistic and put forth ideas somewhere in the middle ground. You may want to just walk away from things for a bit if you're getting so easily frustrated and painting with such a large brush.
@rallydefault Trust me, any inference as to my emotional state regarding this topic is entirely on your (or anyone else's) part. For one I'm broke, and two I'm busy for a while, so the last thing I'm going to be emotional about is a videogame system that I'm not planning to buy anytime soon.
I do however like it when people are happy, and in my hobby of choice which we're all enthusiasts of here I like to engage in more... shall we say engaging and worthwhile discussions that have a better chance of leading to positive results. I just don't see the merits of raising the stakes so high that there are bound to be disappointments at the end of it. If that makes me the odd one out here then so be it. But here's the probable scenario we're looking at for this topic:
That's the bulk of the Switch's first year and for people to infer 'doom' or 'unparalleled success' from that at this stage is silly IMO. And I don't see why this is ruffling people's jimmies.
In regards to the success I think that really all depends on the games and their execution. After all, it's great for Sony to say "We got PaRappa" but then I watched the trailer and really can't see the difference yet gameplay and graphics.
Even if the games we see on the January event may not play great. Fortunately thanks for a few contacts I have got an invite to try out the Switch in January provided I handle any transport and accommodation so I will be sure to try them all out and highlight any major factors to worry about
@BLP_Software Sleek design and a simple, effective and memorable name also. In terms of what little we know so far about the system they have improved significantly over their last one, arguably impossibly so at least if anyone listened to the people who wrote off Nintendo's ability to do anything right after the Wii U.
That news about the charging would certainly be the right thing to do.
@Shinion Cant complain with the design, love a matte finish. The Joy-Con Grip is cute, I can see use for the Joy Cons themselves, the Pro Controller is simple, easy and sleek, modern looking, ergonomic. The system is compact and understandable, it's telling they used no words to explain it.
Even the dock is understated. A PS4 stands out, the Xbox One stands out. This thing is Wii sized, and sits comfortably and looks modern. It'll stand out next to my white TV, but my black monitors? It'll just fit right in.
USB-C charging is definitely the future as well. Just use my phone charger on the go, or a battery pack? Sure why not.
