Look at the last slide on page 3. Switch isn't that far off after Wii. And this is also more than the ps4 sold after it's second year. Can't we just agree it is a success?
That PSN figure goes to show what can be done. I really think Nintendo missed an opportunity with their Online service. A Game Pass style offering of Nintendo Retro games across all previous formats could have been huge. Maybe they’ll rectify that with this ‘new service’ coming later this year.
Well, you implied in your previous comment that moving from manufacturing process of 20 nm to 10 nm would be an important factor for reducing size and power consumption of the switch version "mini". That was what I was talking about.
And, by the way, I wouldn't expect major modifications/improvements in the SOC for any "mini" o "lite" version of the switch. And, trust me, moving from 20 nm to 10 nm is a major modification, technically speaking.
Of course, I could be wrong, this is just my opinion based on my profesional experience in the microelectronics design and manufacturing field.
1. Of course I also meant such a device would have a smaller screen, probably 5" like the PS Vita.
2. Nintendo is working closely with Nvidia now that the Switch is successful. You have to remember that the Tegra line of chips was a failure before the Switch. It was supposed to be used in higher performance tablets and set top boxes like the Shield, but it never took off. Now that the Nintendo Switch is successful, Nvidia will be very willing to either provide a shrunk down X1 chip for a Switch Slim, or a higher performing chip for a Switch Pro.
3. The 10 nm process if of course more expensive, but it also becomes cheaper with time. A reasonable time span might be that in late 2020 we will see either a Switch Slim or a Switch Pro. I'm guessing it will depend on what the competition is doing. If Sony release PS5 in 2020 Nintendo probably don't want to be left behind, and will release a next gen Switch Pro.
It is a big deal to go from 20 nm to 10 nm and it would make the device smaller. It is not the only deal, you would also need to put a smaller and possible more energy efficient screen.
@Agriculture indeed. Strong software and switch having a week first half is probably what led to the outcome. Things will be different this year i suspect.

It's a shame Xbox is so far behind. Hopefully they'll do better next generation so the competition will be more even.
@CurryPowderKeg79 I was about to argue about there being a chance it won't pass the NES, but I just looked at the numbers and that's not even worth considering at this point. Even if it somehow bombs, chances are it can get to 60 mil on what's just been released and announced alone.
@IceClimbers That's... actually pretty good news. Expanding the Gaming Populace might have always worked for them, but there's really nowhere else to go these days. Anyone with any interest in gaming does so. Hopefully this is the reason we've been seeing them line up their IPs moreso outside of the gaming sphere over the last few years.
@Knuckles-Fajita PS4 was oddly balanced with GoW at the start, but as @WebHead said, Detroid + SOTC, the strong third party, Spiderman was a huge draw all year, MHW was big early in the year as a "sort of Sony exclusive but kinda not but we want you to think it is" sort of thing. Then DQXI (it's exclusive til it's not....), it was a pretty big year there (2019 is garbage though.) Poor MS though.....two false starts and a third on the way with Crewsdown. At least Horizon 4 was a huge win.
Switch....I can't believe Ninty actually pulled off the "Smash as the only game that matters" thing....it was a bleak exclusives year, and I was betting against that one game hitting quite that hard. I thought they were nuts doing the "a fighting game is the only thing we're showing" E3 routine. Even Bamco doesn't go that far.
@NEStalgia Well I mean in terms of releasing just raw known quantities in IP Switch did really well. Bayonetta, DK, Kirby, Zelda, Smash, Pokemon, Mario Tennis, Mario Party, all within a year.
Now not a lot of those games were GOOD, but to average joeblow on the street that dont matter. They see a name and cash up.
Either way, I think going forward now the base is established to the tune of 32m users, the figures we should now focus on is where the real money is: software.
Much higher margins, much more revenue. That determines the future now for what games we get.
Now Playing: Mario & Luigi Brothership, Sonic x Shadow Generations
Now Streaming: The Legend of Zelda: Echoes of Wisdom
Also just because the switch mini doesnt have joycon doesnt mean it can't support them detqched via bluetooth. Nintendo can also sell a stand/dock seperately for it. I expect the analog sticks to be replaced by clickable circle pads and the ZL and ZR buttons to be repositioned New 3DS style.
@NEStalgia I still think they were nuts for dedicating that much of E3 to Smash, even with how successful everything was. The only reason I'll give it to them is because XC2 should have launched this year instead as a big exclusive, but they pulled it forwards ahead of when it was ready, which was the right choice tbh. Still, if it had hit 2018 instead, it wouldn't have seemed anywhere near as imbalanced in the early year.
