I try not to throw up too much news in this thread, but I haven't heard a peep about this. Fear Effect Sedna is launching on Nintendo Switch on March 6th.
Currently Playing: Metroid Prime 4: Beyond (NS2); Corpse Factory (PC)
Has anyone else lost a ton of space on their MicroSD card after putting it in their Switch? I put in a 128 GB card and after a restart only had 119 GB of storage.
@Strix Humans think about numbers in base 10, the decimal numeral system, because we have 10 fingers and 10 toes. That’s why the parts of numbers are called “digits” — just like the parts of our hands and feet.
Computers, on the other hand, think in base 2, the binary numeral system.
Herein lies the root of the issue. The “brilliant” marketing gurus at data storage companies decided early on that all their products should be marketed in the decimal system, since that’s what consumers understand.
Therefore, one megabyte on their products is equal to 1,000,000 bytes, and one gigabyte is equal to 1,000,000,000 bytes. To a computer, however, a megabyte is 1,048,576 bytes and a gigabyte is 1,073,741,824 bytes.
Thus, for each gigabyte advertised in base 10, you’re actually receiving about 70 megabytes less than a gigabyte in base 2.
Take a close look at the box your hard drive or memory card came in, and you’ll notice asterisks. Look for the fine print, and you’ll see a disclaimer stating that the figures are stated in base 10.
It's basically because we as idiot consumers are trained in a form of mathematics that use 0-9. Computers use 0-1.
So to us, logically, a megabyte should be no different than say, a kilogram, or a kilometre. 1000 of the smaller unit.
But for computers a megabyte is different because the mathematics is different.
By the way we do maths, yes it SHOULD be 128GBs. By the way computers HAVE to do math, its actually a little less because 1GB for them in binary is bigger than 1GB for us in decimal.
I spent a lot of time doing binary mathematics once. It's fun. Octal can go die though.
Now Playing: Mario & Luigi Brothership, Sonic x Shadow Generations
Now Streaming: The Legend of Zelda: Echoes of Wisdom
Back to the paid online service, it would be nice if all online games on Switch had search preferences.
For some context, I've been playing Halo 5 online multiplayer since its launch in October 2015 using the default "Balanced" search preference settings and for around half a year now I thought Halo 5's online community was pretty much dead. Turns out in fact that the "Balanced" search preference settings is very similar to Splatoon 2's only search option, namely if you're in Europe chances are you'll get timed out a lot because you can't find any matches in the time limit. I changed my search preference settings from "Balanced" to "Expanded" and now I can find matches easily in under a minute.
So it would be very nice if more Switch games gave the option like with Halo 5's "Expanded", "Balanced" and "Focused" options (pretty sure Focused is basically the equivalent of MK8 Deluxe's "Regional" mode).
@Grumblevolcano Bayonetta is a highly talked about topic in the Smash community right now due to being "broken". This is them taking advantage of that. They're running ads for the Bayonetta ports during Smash tourneys too.
