Nintendo does need 3rd parties but they don't necessarily need quote AAA games from them. They have been doing this mostly alone for a while now. If not for the Indies the Wii U would've been even worst and that's hard to imagine.

What's more important for Nintendo is quality Nintendo games. Less 1/2 Switch and more Splatoon and perhaps Arms. We already saw that Zelda can move systems and Mario just took that even further. They need to repeat the games they release just like this year every year going forward. If they could have a heavy hitter no less then ever 3 months they will be alright. Sprinkle in some other games in between and that will be icing on the cake.

Metroid and F-Zero can't sit on the sidelines this generation. Nintendo may need to revive some other franchises as well to keep the games coming. I want another Advance Wars. So many ip's they need this gen, Wave Race anyone?

@Spoony_Tech I'd say out of Nintendo's IPs, Eternal Darkness is probably more important than F-Zero or Metroid. If Capcom's not willing to bring over RE, Nintendo needs to fill the gap meanwhile futuristic racing and action/adventure are kind of already covered by indie games. Yes it would be nice to see F-Zero and Metroid back but it's not necessary.

@Grumblevolcano Metroid is not more important then Eternal Darkness? They made one ED game and countless Metroid games. Now I'm not saying ED isn't important but Metriod if done right has a chance to sell well. The sooner those games hit the better though. We can't have Metroid sitting in the dark for another 2 years. Next year is my guess.

The worst thing is that they continue to collude behind the scenes to engineer a market place that's big on exploitation, violence and the lowest common denominator and small on innovation, charm and intelligence.

The likes of Unravel, Titanfall 1 & 2 (arguably two of the best FPS of this generation), SSX series, Skate, Rock Band, Plants vs. Zombies (and the two Garden Warfare games), Mirror's Edge, Mass Effect, Dragon Age, Dead Space 1, 2 and Extraction (for the Wii) are at least a dozen very different and diverse examples of being the polar opposite of the choice of words you used to describe their most recent catalogue.

Hopefully the exit of the toxic Peter Moore will mean they change course but I fear the dreadful culture he leaves in his wake will forever taint the company.

Toxic? Dreadful culture? This is a games company that does pretty well for themselves and caters to a wide and global audience. Why would EA choose to 'change course' when they have a winning formula?

Yes! Give me some survival horror. Eternal Darkness, Resident Evil, Silent Hill, etc.

@Spoony_Tech The key thing is about the Switch needing a diverse library. Eternal Darkness or even Fatal Frame would add a genre to the Switch's lineup that would otherwise be completely non-existent on Switch. The only way Metroid could reach that usefulness is if it went further in the direction Fusion took the franchise which I really have doubts about as Metroid has always been a T-rated franchise and Nintendo probably wouldn't want a new Metroid to be M-rated.

@Grumblevolcano A prime style game will do very well. They just need not mess with Other M ever again. What on the system now or in the foreseeable future resembles Metroid?

I think Nintendo needs to focus more on creating new IPs than bringing back dormant ones, unless they're going the Kid Icarus Uprising route with something like Star Tropics.

@IceClimbers I can't see them doing more then one new ip a year (and those can be hit or miss, the jury will be out soon on Arms) so that's when the dormant franchises need to come back and yes, Uprising would be most appreciated!

@Spoony_Tech When I was saying about Fusion, I wasn't talking about 2D but rather the themes. Prime style visuals and controls combined with Fusion style themes could do a lot for the Switch.

Spoony_Tech

@BiasedSonyFan While I do agree with you but if 1/2 Switch released when the system was established say a little over a year from now then we wouldn't see anywhere near those sales. 1/2 Switch sold for the lack of games more then anything.

Let's also not forget Zelda had nearly a 1 to 1 attach rate and people that wanted a second game to go with their new system had very little choice of anything else.

@Grumblevolcano I think you're overestimating the impact of Eternal Darkness. It's the same with Beyond Good & Evil. Those games sold jack back in the day, and outside of a very vocal core following on the internet, I doubt many people will care about those games. I'm sure they'll do better than what the originals sold, but I wouldn't say it's more important than Metroid. A franchise that is played by more people, and has sold way more copies than those two games combined. Of course, I'd like to see all of them personally, but I just think that a new Eternal Darkness won't have the impact some people expect it to have. It would basically count as a new IP at this point.

I do agree about diversifying the library, but you also need to remember you can't do that with one game. That's sort of Nintendo's approach in the past; ''we've got a racing game, Mario Kart, we don't need F-Zero''. I feel that it's a lot more important to double down on genres to make sure that there are games for fans of those genres to buy. Even if Capcom brings RE7 to the Switch, I still think it's important we see more horror games.

@Spoony_Tech Speaking of reviving IPs. I've always been clamoring for a Platinum Games made Murasame Castle sequel/reboot/remake. Now I remember From Software on that list of potential developers. Now that's something I'd like to see! From Software Murasame Castle.

@BiasedSonyFan Dozens on the shop yes but retail no. If you go to the store today you will see 4 to 5 retail games. A month ago that was 2 to 3.

@Octane Well it's sometimes important to consider subgenres, especially racing for example can kind of be split into 3:

  • Futuristic (e.g. F-Zero, FAST, Wipeout)
  • Simulation (e.g. Forza Motorsport, Gran Turismo, Project Cars, main F1 series)
  • Arcade (e.g. Mario Kart, Forza Horizon, Diddy Kong Racing, Crazy Taxi)

So I don't agree with the "we have Mario Kart so no reason for F-Zero" idea that Nintendo has but maybe letting Shin'en get involved could work nicely, after all the best game in the F-Zero franchise so far was a collaboration title between Nintendo and SEGA (GX).

I think that's most definitely a typo, they're not that stupid. On top of that, it doesn't sound like the new FE game. It's just a combination of Echoes and Path of Radiance.

Octane

Grumblevolcano

@Octane Well Nintendo said that name of the Gaiden remake is Shadows of Valentia and that Fire Emblem Echoes could be the branding for a series of Fire Emblem remakes. It would make sense to remake the Tellius games or at least put them on VC given how insanely expensive they are to get on their original platforms. I would've expected Genealogy of the Holy War, Thracia 776 or Binding Blade to come next as they are Japan exclusive and no remakes have happened (Mystery of the Emblem had New Mystery of the Emblem despite that being Japan exclusive too) but Path of Radiance would be nice too.
